17 year-old Callum Roberts was included in the Newcastle squad for the game against QPR on Saturday, but he didn’t make the bench, but it was a chance for manager Alan Pardew to show Callum what its like to be part of the first team squad at Newcastle.
Callum Roberts – 17 year-old South Shields born winger
Not sure where Callum was born because in the local press they say North Shields, but in his bio on the Newcastle web-site it says he was born in South Shields on 17th April, 1997.
But Callum has been very impressive playing for the Newcastle U21 side, and he deserved his promotion to the first team squad if only for one game.
Alan Pardew has talked today on nufcTV about the very skilful winger:
“I do like him. He has tremendous technique and ability.¨ “He’s a player that wouldn’t be included normally, because he’s in the preparation phase.¨
¨He’s still got another year at the Academy – and he’s behind Adam Armstrong and behind Rolando Aarons.¨ ¨But he’s knocking on the door.”
“Streete has done terrific on loan. All these local boys are brilliant; we’re in a great position with the local players.”
The Newcastle U21 side will be playing tonight at Whitley Park against Crewe Alexandra tonight at 7:00 pm.
20 year-old center-back Remie Streete
And it’s fitting that Alan at the end of his nufcTV after the game also talked about 20 year-old Remie Streete – who may now return to Port Vale on loan if Fab Coloccini and Steven Taylor are fit for Saturday’s game at West Ham.
But here are two youngsters who are coming through the ranks on Tyneside who have yet to make their first team debuts for Newcastle.
We seem to be really well off with some of our youngsters right now – and long may that continue.
If we could get a pipeline of young players going like Southampton have down south – then that’s one way we could be pressing for a top six position every season.

Comment #121It is great to bring on the kids, although Newcastle really haven’t been at all successful over the years when you consider the quality of the local product. I wonder why it’s taken them so long to focus on the local area, if that is what is now going on. Someone must have given Ashley a history lesson on the ones that got away, a fecken laundry list with Bobby Charlton at the top. If he sorts that out, he’ll deserve a statue too, just maybe out the back, among the shrubbery.

Comment #122Yeah Roberts is another exciting one and let’s give him an intro. Why not? The best time to do it is when the morale in the camp is good

Comment #123It is great to bring on the kids. Newcastle have been sadly derelict in this area over the years. I wonder why it’s happening now. I mean even AC Milan have their scouts in the North East. Perhaps someone gave Ashley a quick history lesson in the ones that got away. A laundry list of missed opportunity and unwon silverware for the club, headed almost unbearably by Bobby Charlton. If he sorts that out, he’ll deserve a statue too. Albeit somewhere out the back, among the shrubbery.

He was sports editor at the Shields Gazette (daily circulation about 29,000 then, not much less than the Chron has now).
Maybe, as his postman, he didn’t tell you. Or was it Mag92 he forgot to tell?
I dunno. I’m confused 😉

Are you still equivocating? After the week you’ve had, with your lager snuffling proboscis? (I quote, of course) Who is it exactly you don’t want to offend?
Shirley? Shouldn’t that be Sheila?

I dearly love the online entity known as Mr Tuff. And I might happily do harm to other online (none) entities he crosses swords with.
I do, however, sometimes wish he would equivocate just a teeny-tiny bit more.
You know the man. But unless your online persona stops being slightly horrid to his online persona, I could see you being stuck in Low Fell next year. Which will do nothing for opinions of dear old Tyneside, I promise you.

I think most people on here can see the potential in the squad and are generally pleased with the turnaround in fortunes but experience from previous occasions when the club have got themselves into a similar optimistic air about themselves has left the supporters wary of the next spanner Ashley and Co. will put in the works.

Tuff and I are long standing mates going back more years than I can remember and our “association” on here is more based on good natured banter to alleviate matters that have left scars.
I wont go into it as it is highly personal but the banter helps in more ways than you could ever know.
As fir staying with him, I doubt even his missus would put up with my sweaty jock straps and smelly socks strewn around their spare bedroom…..lol

Comment #149Expat, I feel as though the club has progressed since Ashley took over, after a truly terrible start, that must have had him almost shaking his head in disbelief, and that it did need restructuring. The decisions that Ashley has taken have appeared to take us repeatedly forward two steps and one back. It’s been a rough ride. I feel in hindsight, he might have been less tight with the purse strings and we might have gotten here more smoothly and perhaps faster. Then again it’s his money and stuff did get personal and ugly. We are due a “spanner in the works”, historically speaking, though I wonder the further we get down the track, the less inclined he might be to do it. I can’t see as much need, even from his perspective, though who really knows what that actually is.

Agree with a lot of what you wrote. I think the next month will be quite telling and crucial in how we either progress or regress.
The fixtures are tough and the cup tie at Spurs will be interesting to say the least.
If we can beat Spurs (which I dont think we will do), it will go a long way to keeping the fans happy. Will Ashley really want this? Does he really care about cup?
We should be getting a number of players back to strengthen the squad again. Will he sell in january or will he buy?
Time will tell.
