The Newcastle United defense has done very well over the last six games in conceding only one goal, and Newcastle are now getting close to setting some records – if we can keep this winning streak going.
Alan Pardew – on the sidelines on Saturday
Newcastle now have six wins in a row in all competitions, and we equaled that in March and April of 2012, when we won six league games in a row before we went down at Wigan 4-0 – and we were 4-0 down at half time in that game – what a shock that was.
Graeme Souness won seven games in a row in all competitions back in February and March of 2005, but those included UEFA Cup and FA Cup games as well as PL games, and in fact that came within a 12 game unbeaten run.
And yes – that unbeaten streak was broken when we lost 3-0 at home to Aston Villa, and that was the game when Lee Bowyer and Kieron Dyer were sent off for fighting each other, and it made (very bad) news around the world for Newcastle.
Two team mates fighting each other.
And we went down to eight men in that game after Steven Taylor had been sent off earlier for handling the ball deliberately on the goal line – so there’s really no better way to end an unbeaten streak by shooting yourself in the foot (three times) and managing to get three of your players sent off.
That should do the trick – and it did – we lost 3-0.
Alan Pardew had an 11 game winning streak in the league at the start of the 2011-2012 season when we garnered 25 points (7 wins, four draws) in our first 11 league games that season.
The best we’ve ever done is way back in 1994 with Kevin Keegan in charge, when we won seven league games in a row, so Alan Pardew can equal that record if we can beat West and Burnley in our next couple of games on Saturday afternoon and Tuesday night respectively
It’s a good added incentive for the lads to do just that.

Comment #1It would definitely be a start in trying to cancel out some of his unwanted records.

Comment #2A win would be absolutely fantastic but if we lose after playing well I hope we don’t see a barrage of anti Pardew posts, I think he’s dine enough this season, not to have us chanting his name but to cut him a bit of slack if we lose with a decent display. He and the players deserved everything they got for that Soton debacle

Comment #3A little surprised ED haven’t mentioned the four yellow cards that sissoko & colback had.
A win is a win.whether u won it by one goal or not, doesn’t matter, the worst thing that could happen is blabbing by poor viewing people.
Those who try to complain here about winning a game by one goal are pessimists, nobody’ll hear you, speak for yourself !!

Comment #4I’m not Pardew’s biggest fan and would have liked to have seen the back of him to be honest.
But credit where credits due..he’s turned it round in spectacular fashion with the help of some you guns!
Dummet is definitely a CB, just needs to add some finesse to his distribution.
Long may it continue… Who knows where we might finish up if Ashley has the balls to invest in the next window

A win most definitely is a win and delivers three points but football is about entertainment and it’s not that entertaining watching your team labour to a boring 1-0 win. Fast flowing attacking football excites the crowd thus generating an electric atmosphere, something that has been sorely missed under Pardews tenure.

Not to mention the severe strain on the nerves of a narrow-margin win!

I think a lot of people would take 12th with entertaining football over eighth with lots of 1-0 wins.

Just once I’d love to see us really HAMMER some team with a four or five-goal margin. Can’t think which one, though!

Comment #12Saturday will do for starters, without trawling stats I think we’ve scored four three times in Pardews hundred and odd games, Wolves 4-0, W Ham 5-0 and Hull 4-1, anymore anyone and how many games has he been in charge.

I like entertaining football too. But a hard earned 2-1 win can be just as thrilling as scoring 4 imo.

I’d take 7th or above assuming we qual for Europe, with lots of 1-0 wins, over finishing twelfth any day of the week.
I’d also take a scrappy lucky series of 1-0 wins to win the capital one cup too for that matter.

Comment #19I don’t think our football has been too bad recently to be honest with you. It’s been well organised, and implemented well. We have attacking intent, and often created decent chances whilst the defence has been solid. All in all I have enjoyed watching us play recently.

Agreed, I’d take 1-0 to get in to Europe or a cup win but I’d sooner finish 12th than eighth with nicer football

Comment #22When AP has the team winning anything goes and anything is possible. We all know he can churn out a lot of baloney and the latest successes are probably more down to luck and the limited availability of players. When you translate the misnomers his tactical strategy is very narrow and has varying effectiveness. However, long may it continue to work.
Pardew speak = reality
Control = defensive solidity
Attack = possession
Tactics = defensive shape
Attempts = free kicks and corners
Defensive play = all players behind the ball
Offensive play = over the half way line

Comment #23JFA @ 21, whilst I agree with that in principle, I am not getting any younger. I really want to see my team lift something worthwhile, and if that means ugly scrappy wins, then so be it. It would be nice for our team to start building on relative success, rather than just consolidate every year.

Comment #24Remi Streete linked with three clubs on loan, needs to leave next couple of days if he’s allowed.
Still find it a little strange he was called back, have no clue if he’ll go back out on loan though.
Few clubs in for Gignac 6m euros apparently starts the bidding, no thanks.
It is nice to see us heading towards records we would like breaking.

Comment #25I see no reason why we can’t have a go at winning the league cup!
A few weeks ago bottom of league it was a healthy distraction now in 5th we can afford to play our strongest side in qf if we really wanted to.
I’m not asking to risk players just to get into the semi but with the players showing what their capable of recently surely we can put a side out that has a good chance of beating spurs.

I agree it’s a tough month but not as tough as it would be playing those sides in previous years. Man U and Arsenal are no where near as strong as previous years and both give plenty of chances.
Chelsea is the toughest game but they don’t like traveling to SJP after them I see Everton as the 2nd hardest match.
I think we can have a decent December I’m actually looking foward to all the matches and I expect the players are too.
Hope Pardew goes for it

It was above arrogance when after being told the cups were priority he was asked if we were safe in the league would we aim for a cup, he replied with the same answer, it reminded me of that stupid sign you sometimes see in cheap offices.

after a couple of losses as long as pards keeps faith with what has gotten us the wins I will be reasonably happy

We’ve been handed a unexpected opportunity and should do everything we can to progress.
Surely Pardew wants to win a cup no matter what’s being said upstairs, even if he has been told to concentrate on league if he doesn’t try to progress he shouldn’t be a manager.

One thing we’ve always agreed on for the last three seasons is that we should have signed at least one quality CB able to perform well in the Prem.
Collo and STaylor are both injury prone and it’s only from mid last season that Williamson has started to perform at Prem level. The CB we did sign, Mbiwa, couldn’t cope with high balls and the physical side of the Prem.
Add this all up and Pardew has had to constantly change the back four with the likes of Simpson, Perch and Mbiwa lining up with Collo, STaylor or Williamson and rarely have two of those last three played together for any length of time. In addition we’ve had Santon at LB who is IMO very poor defensively and even Debuchy took a while to hit top form.
Result – we’ve regularly been a defensive shambles. All of the best/most consistent teams are built on a good well drilled defence with a fairly regular back four. Pardew, due to a lack of CB signings, has never had that.
The big difference lately is Dummett, Williamson, Jamnatt and Haidara. Pardew now has these guys all playing well to add to Collo and STaylor which means whichever combo we play we’ve got a very decent back four. That has been the basis on which this six game winning streak has been built.
I’ve said all along that whilst Pardew isn’t the greatest manager he definitely is not the worst as many have previously said. You build a team from the back and I think we’ll see a different Newcastle and a different Pardew from now on.

I don’t think Mashers can stand having four CB’S when you can only play two, the wasted wages causes him anxiety and nausea leading to heavy bouts of black depression.
