Alan Shearer on BBC Sport last night said that he thought Chelsea missed the suspended Nemanja Matic in their first defeat in 23 games to Newcastle United at St. James’ Park yesterday afternoon – a ground where Jose Mourinho has never won.
Alan Shearer – it was a thoroughly deserved win
The Serbian International was suspended for picking up his 5th yellow card in their dominating 3-0 win against Tottenham last Wednesday night, and that could have been a little bit of luck for Newcastle.
Mikel came in for his first start in the Premier League this season, and he was not as effective as the brilliant Serbian International, who has been one of the Blues’ best players this season.
This is what Alan told BBC Sport:
“Chelsea didn’t play that well,” “There is no doubt they missed Nemanja Matic. He has started every game for them this season but John Mikel Obi was in there against Newcastle and didn’t do as well.¨
¨In the build-up to Newcastle’s second goal, Mikel dives in, Eden Hazard dives in. There is no one sitting in front of the back four.#
“That said it was a really committed Newcastle performance. They were really well organised and every player knew what job they had to do. It was a thoroughly deserved win.”
Just in case – on the off-chance – there are some Newcastle youngsters out there who don’t know just how great Alan Shearer was – he played 404 times for Newcastle United with a club record 206 goals – and in his career overall he played 734 games with 379 goals.
Alan was captain of both England and Newcastle and played 60 times with 29 goals for his country, and he was as great a player as his record suggests.
Oh – and he scored a record 260 Premier League goals – 148 of those for Newcastle United.
