Alan Pardew tried to put a brave face on the fourth defeat in a row for Newcastle United against Sunderland today – the first time that has happened in 116 years of the fixture, and today was the 151st meeting between Newcastle and Sunderland.
Alan Pardew at the final whistle today
It’s not a very good record for Alan Pardew to have, and to be fair to Newcastle we were going all out for the winner, just before Adam Johnson scored after 90 minutes.
Just before he scored Moussa Sissoko had a superb shot tipped brilliantly over the bar by Sunderland goalkeeper Costel Pantilimon, and from the resulting corner Sunderland had a quick counter attack which led to Johnson scoring the winner.
This is what a dejected Newcastle manager said after the game:
“Of course it is painful,” “The players, after a first half where we got wrapped up in the emotion… giving away fouls, some strange moments – the second half we were much more composed and started to create chances.”
“But the longer you go on you know there is a risk, you’re always liable to over-commit and one fault we had today was that we over-committed, particularly with the history of this – they have caught us on the counter before and they did it again today.”
“This club want to see goals, and I am never going to manage this club and accept a draw as a positive result.” “We should still have the discipline in the team, it was our defenders that over-committed not the attacking players, but I am not going to criticise them they tried to win the game.”
“You could see at the end the players gave everything, you can’t say we didn’t. Football being football you don’t get your just desserts.” “It hurts, I just feel that I can only take them game by game, today’s performance to a certain extent was a good one.”
“There were some great performances from both teams and one of the better derbies I have been involved in, they edged the first half but second half we came into it and we perhaps did enough to win it.”
“Today was a key game, the two fixtures we had, Arsenal and Spurs, were difficult but this game compounds that and we have to lick our wounds, we have had some tough games but this was a critical fixture.”
In the circumstances (it was an absolutely disastrous result for Newcastle) those are decent words from the manager.
Certainly it was an exciting game especially in the second half, as both teams created chances and wanted to win the game – but it was also obvious that both clubs have trouble scoring goals these days, and most of the chances were missed.
It was good to see 17 year-old Geordie Adam Armstrong come on in the second half, and we had six Geordies on the field – five started the game – when was the last time that happened – 1899?
But why did Pardew wait so long to bring on Papiss Cisse in the second half?
But given it looked like it was going to end 0-0 and Newcastle would get just one point, it’s hard to criticize the lads for pushing for the winner, and being caught out right at the end.
Hopefully, we will have some of our injured players back (very) soon, but Cheick Tiote managed (again) to pick up a yellow card and he is suspended for the game at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.
Cheick Tiote can often be a liability to Newcastle – am I the only one that thinks that?
We hope that Mehdi Abeid can play in that game on Friday – we have been very impressed when the Algerian has come into the side this season.
And lastly, we thought Jak Alnwick had a solid game – and he showed great courage in coming back from his display at Tottenham in mid-week – certainly he had no chance with the goal – Johnson hit the ball into the goal at around 100 mph.

I agree we are short on wingers but that is partly Pardew’s fault .
He obviously favours 4-2-3-1 which isn’t great for wingers to begin with, then he brings in 3 players that can play number 10 FFS . He does have a say in transfer believe it or not .
Also don’t forget he was ready to ship out Sammy & Obertan so If you think they were in his plans before the injuries hit you are deluded . He also had no clue that Aarons would come on as far as he has so I think a lot of the blame lies at Pardews door IMO .

Comment #3Alan Pardew is the first ever Newcastle United manager to lose 6 consecutive Premier League matches.
Since the beginning of the 12/13 season, Pardew’s Newcastle United have been in a losing position 26 times at half-time and never won. P26 W0 D2 L24.
Newcastle United have NEVER went beyond the fourth round of the League Cup or FA Cup under Alan Pardew.
Alan Pardew has lost as many Tyne-Wear derbies (3) as the last 22 Newcastle United managers combined.
NUFC failed to score directly from a corner in 102 consecutive games under Alan Pardew between 2012-2014.
No Premier League club suffered more home defeats in 2012-13 than NUFC under Alan Pardew.
Between 1993-2010 NUFC had lost 35 Premier League games by 3 goals or more. Since Alan Pardew arrived in 2010 NUFC have amassed 20 losses by the same margin (more than any other Premier League club)
In the 2013/14 season Alan Pardew’s Newcastle United lost 4 home games in a row without scoring a goal; the first time in the club’s entire history that this has happened.

Comment #7we have the personnel to be a top 4 side
if west ham can do it so can we
All we need is a manager that is
1. brave enough to drop colocinni
2. wise enough to use cisse correctly
3. discerning enough to play cabella in the hole where he belongs
problem is pardew is as far away from all those things as humanly possible.
he is the worst kind of dumb.
he is dumb and delusional.
he thinks he is the dogs bollocks but he is actually the dogs arsehole.
nothing but shite comes out of him

how can that be pardew’s fault at all how do we know he wants to play 4-2-3-1 when these players we see coming have got nothing to do with pardew at all?
the season he was playing 4-3-3 he had been using the wingers, don’t if pardew himself was in charge of transfers we would have seen far more English players coming into the club.
he always seems to want the return of carroll which again tells me he wants to use wide men as they are what tall strong physical strikers need.
so it’s the fact cashley himself doesn’t allow pardew to bring what he wants and until this season obatan our only only true winger was rubbish and consistently booed so pardew had no choice but to try the 4-2-3-1 with a number 10

or was that just another stick to beat him with?
he surely see’s wingers are important but the club either signs knowone or people who look like good deals at the time regardless

So you are telling me Pardew has no say in transfers whatsoever ? . Give it a rest m8 .
He has said on many occasions Sissoko is a player that as soon as he watched wanted to sign him and he did .
Pardew goes to Graham Carr and asks him to find a player in a certain position that he & Carr agree on and then Ashley will get them for the right money .
If he was desperate for wingers then one or two would have came through the door in the last few years don’t you think ? .

Comment #17These days you know the result before kick off. We went on a good little run when starting with two pacey wide players(ameobi, cabella etc..) Then he starts playing gouffran as a starter and the wins dry up. Think we have won ONE league game this season when Gouffran has started. Must say I don’t get our gaffer at all.

Comment #19All talk of formations and choice of players are smokescreens. The players are not good enough and neither is the manager. That is the bottom line. West Ham and Soton will be nowhere near the top 4 by the end of the season because the players are not good enough.
We have one player of true class who might be coveted by the top teams – Sissoko. Possibly Krul. They will be sold by our greedy owner. The rest are average players and some are Championship players lucky to be in the squad. The forward line is powder puff and the bairns cannot hold the ball up for toffee. Some of them look 8 stone wet through. We have bought some crap but not as much as the bindippers. LOL

well then tell me now why are we not able to sign any of these English players he keeps wanting
why haven’t we signed a CB something which for such as defensive manager is a thing I most certainly expect.
if he wanted cabbella why would he be leaving him on the bench

Comment #24all these player that pardew doesn’t know how to use prove he doesn’t want to sign them.
if pardew was the one who had the final say in transfers then your saying kevin keegan is a spoilt brat because yeh wise might have come but still keegan himself would still have had final say on transfers

You are just making excuses for him now like .
He obviously approved the Cabella signing so it is up to him to get the best out of the lad .
And the reason we don’t buy English players is because of the wages and transfer fee’s .
My point still stands that if he desperately wanted wingers or centre backs he could have used the De Jong or Cabella money simple as .

Comment #26Today’s game today just showed how much ahead of us sunderland are. Poyet is 10x the manager pardew will ever be and he has potential to be a very good manager. He wants to implement an identity at sunderland. Something we don’t have. They played some lovely football in the first half as well, something we can only dream of.

You are deluded m8 .
£ 10 million is £10 million no matter where you spend it .
Ashley probably doesn’t have a clue who Remy Cabella or Siem De Jong is but he paid good money for them .
You’re telling me that if Pardew said forget those two and spend less money on some players we actually need Ashley would refuse ? .

Comment #29I don’t care whether Pardew has the final say on players (although he says he does), he has enough talent in that squad to make a much better fist of it. Why would you play one light weight player up front if you’re out to win the game when you know it doesn’t work because you’ve tried it time and again? Then, when it doesn’t work, add Armstrong, Cisse and Cabella?

FACT
1 shearer a legend can cope with him
he appoints a man called JFK twice I repeat twice
he sacks chris hughton at a time when that manager was doing very and strange for a owner wants to see growth especially when parjew is still here after a terrible second half to a season.
the owner wants to invest in rangers weird for an owner who wants to improve Newcastle
fact is whilst aslhey is here pardew is here
whilst Ashley is here we only sign players to sell later on.

Comment #35Ok. Fait play to Negadew, he isn’t laying the blame at the players feet. However, saying he isn’t setting up fpr a draw, but then playing 2 holding players is what baffles me. We were winning with the 433. Why the hell change it. I dont care that it wasnt pretty, and we still had to play defencively im long spells, at least we posed a counter atting goal threat and actually seemed able to pass the ball about. If it aint broke, dont fix it! My only fear was that he would switch back to thos as soon as he could, and lo and behold, he did. Not learning from mistakes is bad enough, but not learning from successes is unforgivable.
