Daryl Janmaat had a good World Cup for Holland in Brazil last summer, which is one reason Newcastle signed him for £5M from Feyenoord to replace Mathieu Debuchy who signed on at Arsenal over the summer for 12M
Daryl Janmaat after his mistake
The Holland manager during the World Cup Louis van Gaal took them to third place in the tournament but then joined Manchester Unite immediately after the tournament ended so Holland brough in another great Dutch coach – 68 year-old Guus Hiddink – the former Holland manager from 1994-1998.
But Holland lost two of their first three group games against Czech Republic (2-1) and then Iceland (2-0) and in that first game Daryl was responsible for their winning goal in stoppage time when his header back to the goalkeeper was misdirected and hit the post and Darida scored the winner.
After the game a distraught Janmaat had to be consoled by Newcastle team-mate Tim Krul and he had this to say:
“This is my fault and it is inexcusable.” “It was a big mistake, I wanted to head the ball back to Jasper Cillessen but I didn’t hit it well.”
“I’ve now scored a sort of own goal and feel very bad about it, it felt like the ground had been swept away from under me.”
“The Czech Republic away isn’t easy but we had to win this one.”
After the game a furious Guus Hiddink didn’t pull any punches:
“I was livid,” “I had to stay in the shelter. That’s why I stayed away for half an hour.” “If you cannot win, you must be sure that you will not lose in any case. Then you should not be so stupid to give away a goal.”
“When you make mistakes like that (Janmaat), then it is a very difficult story.” “Whether you play football with four or five defenders, it does not matter if you’re so naive defending.”
“The first goal they shoot great inside, but for that we had to suffer two clumsy turnovers. That second goal we completely gave away.”
You know we sense somehow that Guus wasn’t too happy with Daryl after the game. 😀
It’s probably not too surprising given those words that Guus Hiddink hasn’t selected him since that mistake – but nothing has been said to Daryl – which doesn’t seem like good man-management.
Daryl has been in top form for Newcastle this season, and he was one of the successes of our summer signings, and he doesn’t fully understand why he has missed out on the last two Dutch squads that Hiddink has selected.
This is what he said yesterday about his exclusion from the squad:
“I’m not sure I can understand it. He (Hiddink) has not told me, because actually it is not explained to me why I was not there in the national set up anymore.”
We can hazard a guess.
All Daryl needs to do is concentrate on playing well for Newcastle United (that’s the most important thing in any case), and he is already improving his game on Tyneside, and he will get back into the Holland side eventually.
Daryl is already turning out to be an excellent buy for Newcastle, and we have hardly missed Mathieu because of the Dutchman’s good form – and he has three assists and one goal in Newcastle colors.
