While Newcastle fans will be hoping for some changes for the better when a new manager is announced to replace Alan Pardew, Mike Ashley will continue to run the club like he’s been running it over the four years that Pardew was the Newcastle manager.
Lee Charnley and Mike Ashley – search begins for new manager
The emphasis on youth and buying young players who can improve on Tyneside once they arrive – like Ayoze Perez as one example – will continue.
There will also be continued investment in the Youth Academy, which seems to be bearing some fruit at last, with youngsters like Adam Armstrong, Rolando Aarons, Lubo Satka, Remie Streete and Callum Roberts coming through nicely.
And good players becoming free agents will continue to be followed closely, with the view that we can either get them when they become free agents, or shortly before that for a cut price transfer fee.
And now and again we may even pay out some big money for a player like we did when we paid £9M to SC Freiburg for Papiss Cisse almost three years ago – but around £10M seems to be the limit for Mike in today’s transfer market.
Players will be brought into the club by committee, with the manager only one member of that committee, and basically the manager’s job at Newcastle seems to be three-fold under Ashley:
1) Responsible for the playing staff and his remit is to get the very best out of the first team players available
2) Ensure that youngsters at the club are given a fair crack of the whip and brought through the ranks
3) Be the voice of Newcastle United to the press and the outside world
That’s more of the way managers on the continent operate, and the new manager will not have the final say on who comes into the club and who leaves the club.
We hope that Mike Ashley will refrain from selling our best players at the wrong time, but we still think every player will have his price at Newcastle, and when a bid comes in meeting that price, the player will be sold whether we can replace him or not.
Finances will remain more important than the playing staff – that will not change either.
When Alan Pardew was manager the owner sold Andy Carroll, Demba Ba and Yohan Cabaye when they were the best players at the club, and we didn’t replace them in the January transfer windows in which they were sold.
And we also sold Mathieu Debuchy last summer.
So Mike also seems to want to fund Newcastle by getting players in on the cheap and selling them when their ambitions exceed those of Newcastle – translation – they want to play in the Champions League.
Mike Ashley is in Barbados right now, but Managing Director Lee Charnley has been tasked with bringing in a replacement Pardew – but there are not exactly any top managers currently available.
Newcastle have been linked with Ajax manager Frank de Boer, but Frank will insist on seeing out the season in Amsterdam before he would consider any move away from the Dutch powerhouse.
Managers we have been linked with like Tony Pulis, Glenn Hoddle, Steve Bruce, Tim Sherwood, Steve McClaren, Christophe Galtier, Pep Guardiola and others are all average managers.
Sorry – whoops – Pep shouldn’t be in there – I got carried away. 😀
Let’s try to concentrate again.
We are a little surprised that Newcastle have been so quick to clear the way for Alan Pardew to join Crystal Palace when that leaves Newcastle struggling to replace him – since it’s the middle of the season – in fact exactly the middle with 19 league games having been played.
Newcastle have 26 points and in 10th place and we are 14 points from safety – and it would be a good start post Alan Pardew, if the lads can get a home win against Burnley on New Years Day.
We may also be surprised as we were with Alan Pardew – when Mike Ashley brings in the seventh manager in his reign – the others being Sam Allardyce (appointed by Freddy Shepherd), Kevin Keegan, Joe Kinnear, Alan Shearer, Chris Hughton and Alan Pardew.
Hopefully we will find out fairly soon – but the lads will need the full support of the fans on Thursday and another win would be great – but it will have to be without the suspended Papiss Cisse.

Comment #43I see pundit Jamie carragher is saying the treatment of pardew by our fans is over the top and we pushed him out of his job with our unfair rantings and ravings. Why don’t his old team Liverpools fans come in for a lambasting? Didn’t Brendon rodgers closely miss out on the title, then have his best player sold on him? They failed to replace, as did we and are now only just above us in the league. The scousers are calling for his head yet he was the new messiah last year. It’s our failure in the transfer market that annoys our fans, yet have your say and your idiotic and vindictive. The squeaky scouse get should subject his own fans to a bit of high pitched verbal.

Comment #50I agree…nowt ill change…Carver and stone for the next two games and if they get more than 3 points from those two games Ashley will just stick with them til the end of the season.
We should all remember as far as Ashley is concerned t’s not about the football, or the way we play or the relationship with the fans…it’s about finishing 17th or better whilst he pick-pockets £30 million a year from sky and player sales and free advertising
Forget anyone we’ve been dreaming about over the last 3 days…sadly it’ll be an appointment from within

Comment #52On the fans running Pardew out of the club…
Clearly this was not the overall deciding factor. The demonstrations etc stopped over a month ago when things somewhat improved.
Clearly the deciding factor was that he actually had an out. Sure not having to face a fanbase, who a fair old whack of had simply had enough would be a factor in it – but it is not the reason.
Truth is, there are probably many reasons why he wanted out, but we all know, if Palace didn’t want him now, he’d still be here.

Comment #53When you read the beginning of Ed’s blog, about the youth policy et al, you have to wonder how the club management could get it so wrong. An experienced (older) coach, who is confident in his own ability, would suit us fine.

Comment #68But were they hogs optimate? That’s really big pigs. We need somebody to get down and dirty. To throw a hissy fit at the first sign of trouble. To mispronounce the names of the players. To scream at the press. Say, does this remind anyone of somebody who used to work for us? Hmmm.
