Caretaker manager John Carver has just announced the Newcastle team for the game at home this afternoon with Burnley and Steven Taylor returns in central defense and Manu Riviere gets a start up front in place of the suspended Papiss Cisse.
Newcastle: (4-4-2): Jak Alnwick; Daryl Janmaat, Steven Taylor, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Paul Dummett; Moussa Sissoko, Cheick Tiote, Jack Colback, Yoan Gouffran; Ayoze Perez, Emmanuel Riviere
Substitutes: Freddie Woodman, Davide Santon, Massadio Haidara, Mike Williamson, Vurnon Anita, Remy Cabella, Adam Armstrong
Referee: Mike Dean (The Wirral)
It looks like it’s a 4-4-2 formation with Perez and Riviere up front so it will be interesting to see how the two of them play together – but this is an attacking formation – we need the 3 points.
And Steven Taylor has come back in with Mike Williamson dropping down to the bench which is strong – and Davide Santon is again on the bench, as is Adam Armstrong.
John Carver will have some options he can use in the second half, depending on how the game goes, but this is an attacking formation – let’s hope our defense can tighten up and Perez, Sissoko or Riviere can get the goals for us today, in the absence of Papiss Cisse.
This will be an important game and if we can get a win it should give the powers that be more time to see who’s available who could come in and take over as head coach of Newcastle.
67% think we can win this game this afternoon, so is we cannot do that it ‘s going to be a big disappointment.

i fully agree, but he really had the chance to connect back with the fans,
he is in the stand in manager position, he has the final say on who was picked today

I would have started Haidara and Cabella over Dummet and Goofy. If it is 442 then it is pretty disappointing that Sissoko has been forced back out wide. If it is 4231 then will it be Rivi or Perez up top? Either could play on the flank, and either could play up top.
Difficult to read too much into it until we kick off and see how the line up stands, and whether we are going to play with a more attacking mentality.

Comment #44If its a 433 that could work with Riviere , Perez and Gouffran moving about positions and linking together unfortunately I dont Gouff or Rivi have the confidence to play that kind of role just yet Perez is constantly on the move always looking to make stuff happen but you can visibly see him getting more confident every game

Comment #46I can not express this anymore, but thank goodness we didn’t go for another predictable 433. Oppositions could see that a mile away. Needed sumthing different, sumthing fresh. Pardew leaves and a fresh formation has started already. It’s shows it was pardew that wouldn’t change da formation. I can see a win with this fresh formation

Comment #48Lack of creativity in that team. Perez will need to create chances for himself again. Burnley will be all over him as our only threat.
Seems like theres a lot of grafters playing for both sides. 0-0 all over it.

Comment #50Hopefully Perez is going to play central and Riverre wider. I’m assuming Sammi is injured, but still would have prefered Cabella for Goofy and Haidarra or Santon for Dummett. The caretaker has limited options, to be fair to him, but that’s a percentages side, as far as I can tell, and if Rivière plays in the middle, one that looks quite capable of dropping points anyway. Even so, it’s a new dawn, and it’s Burnley at home, so plenty of reason to think we can do enough to win and move on.

Comment #53Only one fault I can see with today’s line up 2day. Which is sissoko on the wing.
Make that two faults, with goufran on the other wing

Comment #56Gouffran and Sissoko as the wide mids? Not a fan of that, goofy is a waste of space and sissoko seems a lot less effective out wide, hopefully Carver figures that out after today.

Comment #61That’s a reasonable line-up, although it looks more like a 4-3-3 to me. Attacking, that’s for sure. Let’s just hope they don’t do what Citeh did and leave themselves open, assuming they can’t produce much. Their strikers are on form right now; very dangerous.

Comment #65I think we will get our answer about carver being Pards lap dog when he makes his subs. If it’s bring on a defender at 85 minutes when we are 2-0 down, it’s business as usual.

Comment #66This was Carvers chance to get the fans on his side and show he understands who the better players are that deserve to be in the side.
Haidara is clearly the best available LB option, Dummett should be CB, gouffran should be replaced by, at the moment, Cabella.
Same crap as before, think he has lost any potential fan support for picking this team. Only a comfortable win will make up for this, even a 2-1 win wouldnt change much.

Comment #76And the boot goes in already. Pardew would never have started with 2 strikers, ok Haidara should’ve been LB and Cabella maybe for Goofy but we don’t no if Goofy and Dummett’s been told to support the attackers. I honestly think the Beardsley Stone as coaches is a good thing. Easy win today 3-1 HWTL

Comment #78I feel that we should take three points. City couldn’t do it on Sunday so you never know. Pardew’s leaving could have a real negative impact on the players. I think we’ll play some good attacking football today however. Newcastle 2 Burnley 1.
