John Carver was told that he would be caretaker manager at least for the next two games by Managing Director Lee Charnley, in what was said to be a short telephone call with Lee Charnley earlier this week, after Newcastle had agreed compensation for Pardew with Crystal Palace.
A younger John Carver with Sir Bobby Robson – circa 2003
And the Newcastle players have been very supportive of John and his team over the last two days – and have been training well – so we hope that translates into a good result this afternoon at home to Burnley.
If John can get a couple of wins in the next two games against Burnley and at Leicester City in the 3rd round of the FA Cup on Saturday, he could even be well positioned to get the job permanently – but there are a couple of big “ifs” in there.
The only experience John Carver has in management is a short 15 months managing MLS side Toronto from February, 2008 through April, 2009 when he resigned.
This is what John said yesterday, and he certainly seems to have the Newcastle players right behind him:
“I loved managing in Canada, I really did.” “If you asked 100 assistant managers, I think 99.9% would say they want to manage.”
“If we play against Burnley like we’ve trained today we’re going to be OK,” “Everybody was upbeat, everybody was buoyant and a lot of players have come up to me and ’we’ve got your back’. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
“Officially, the manager Pardew is still the manager of the football club until it’s in black and white.” “I have not really had a lot of time to think about it.”
“But you’ve got to wait for the right opportunity. Now the manager looks like he’s going, what’s my situation?” “Only time will tell. My head’s going 100 miles an hour here, as you can imagine.”
“I think that every coach who goes into football wants to be a manager, and there will be a day when I want to be a manager again, there’s no doubt about that.”
It will not be easy today against Burnley, with Papiss Cisse missing after picking up a three match ban, and he will be off at the weekend to play in the African Cup of Nations, and so will Cheick Tiote and Mehdi Abeid – for up to six weeks. 🙁
In fact Cisse has been allowed to go home to Senegal, before he joins his country’s squad at the weekend.
Football is a results oriented game – it’s only about the results – and we are now hoping John Carver and his team can get the results in the next couple of games, and if they can do that – who knows what may happen?

I would just be happy if Carver goes back to what was working when we won 6 on the trott. It still wasnt the pretiest, but was still a bit better than shoe-horning goofy into a 4231.

Comment #44I thought Abeid was injured – how can he go to Afcon ?
” We’ve got your back ” is this message lifted from the 118 118 TV Adverts? Has Ed reported this wrongly ? Maybe it’s code so 118 should be “11Ate” meaning Carver please get 11 pies in for half time, 9 for players who have no diet restrictions leaving 2 for JC , one for half time and one for the after match interview. Just a thought, albeit somewhat random. Happy days.

I’m home at the moment, but can’t wangle a pass to the pub, so I’ll listen instead and catch it on MOTD. Dawn is always the most potential-filled part of the day. But it may be just before dawn, when it is, by repute, darkest.

Comment #46Tsunki…I suppose if Carver wants to manage Newcastle one day the best way to go about is to distance himself ad much ad possible from how Pardew approached football?
…and I am not going to say tactics this time TS 😉 lol

Ah thats a shame. You need a secret passage or something so you can escape!
Well, as long as the dark is lifted by the end of January, we might just live through it.

Comment #51I guess Pardew is playing hardball with Palace about Woodman and possibly signing his son. Woodman might not want to split the family.
If it does go pear shaped and Palace get sick what reaction is Pardew going to get if he just carries on at NUFC … lol

If Carver injects a touch of his own aggression into his tactics, we’re off to a good start! We just need to be more attacking, and the team can build some confidence from that.

Comment #53Players have his back but with three leaving for Africa and the ongoing MIA list he won’t have very many players to choose from.
Afraid that our transfer window will be affected by not having a full time manager in.
Will be interesting to see who John picks today?
Will he just continue the Pards thinking or drop Gouffran/Willo

we have a limited Squad especially with all our injuries. Fans expect to much from it. We occasionally punch above our weight against the bigger teams and fans expect it all the time. Mid table is a fair result for us, unless MA puts his hand in his pocket we’ve hit our potential.

That’s the big problem … this is as good as it will ever be under Ashley.
A safe 8-10th.
Out of the cups as early as possible.
Avoid Europa League spot.
Small cheap squad. Maximise profits. Free advertising.
We need to get rid if any of us ever want to dream about winning something … that is the point of a sports club right?

Comment #61Simon Cowell is on holiday in Barbados, so is Mashley.
Is this a coincidence or is a deal being done ?
Do they have a love child together ?
Will Pardew be a judge on the X Factor ?
Has Carver got Talent ?
Will Cheryl be our new Manager ?
Who knows…but answers to all these questions and more will be revealed in 2015 …another roller coaster year.
Hang on for the ride of your life

Comment #62Cheap squad … our only CF worth his shirt is Perez a 1.5M youngster.
Last year I watched 10 NUFC players and that guy from QPR who insulted in the first place.
I’m not a fan of us fielding loan players.
Yet Ashley won’t buy a CF he hasn’t the balls to spend enough.
Some bad early signings and he completely lost his bottle.

Comment #63It will be interesting to see the selection today. Has Carver been secretly thinking Pardew’s selections were wrong or will he follow suit?
If he wants the backing of the fans and a shot of getting the job he needs to start Haidara LB, Dummett CB, and Gouffran not in the 11.
It will show that he understands who the form players are better than Pards and the fans will appreciate it.
Lets see, really hope Cabella and Haidara start with Dummett CB.

Comment #67On this first day of the New Year I had hoped to have some lively debate/dialogue with “fans” who had supported King Percy.
I would have asked why they thought he had jumped ship, how their prophecies will no longer come to fruition as he was no longer up for the fight, do they feel let down by their hero running off.
It appears that finding a pro Percy Brigade member on the blog nowadays is as likely as finding a hens tooth.
However,as King Percy is now yesterdays news, I feel that a celebratory crow is in order.

Not sure about Anitas availability.
As for accomodating rivvy and cabella, i would go with the 433. They can play either side of perez who seems like a very good false 9. All 3 are interchangable. Not sure if Carver would be modern enough to try it. Fingers crossed.

My be a strange atmosphere for today’s game. Caretaker boss, an opposition absolutely scrapping for everything and maybe the season’s lowest crowd (I’d guess 48,000). Looking forward to it none the less from my regular perch in the corner…
It’s going to be a tough one. HWTL
