There’s a report in the Guardian today that German coach Thomas Tuchel is being considered for the Newcastle United head head coach position by owner Mike Ashley.
Thomas Tuchel – Newcastle interested
The 6’4″ 41 year-old Tuchel is said to be an excellent tactician and he’s done well at Mainz, and his odds have shortened to 10-1 and is fourth favorite for the job on SkyBet.
Since Newcastle operate the club in the way clubs are run on the continent – it’s not surprising that Ashley may hire his first foreign coach for Newcastle.
The coaches currently above him in the betting for the Newcastle job are Tim Sherwood (2-1) , Steve McClaren (5-2) and John Carver (4-1).
Tuchel managed FC Augsburg for a year from July 2007 and two years later he joined Mainz in the Bundesliga, and he left that club last summer, although he is still under contract at the club.
His management record at Main was 182 games played 72 won, 46 drawn for a win average of 39.6%.
Schalke 04 and Bayer Leverkusen both made approaches for the highly rated coach towards the end of last season, after Mainz had qualified for a 2014–2015 UEFA Europa League spot.
They finished last season in seventh place in the Bundesliga with 53 points from their 34 games – won 16, drew 5 and lost 13 with a goal difference of -2.
Tuchel has introduced revolutionary new training techniques at Mainz and seems to be rewriting the book on coaching.
He is a highly regarded coach who goes into a match with various alternatives and formations, which he can change to depending on how the game is going, and there have been several articles written on his techniques and his training methods.
At the end of last season Tuchel asked to be released from his contract at Mainz, and he left his position in May of last year.
However, Mainz have refused to release him and he is still contracted to them until the summer.
It appears that Tuchel would be available in the summer if Newcastle can get him, but presumably we could also pay compensation to Mainz to get him immediately.
Maybe Mike Ashley will ask John Carver and his team to manage Newcastle though the end of this season.
Newcastle could try to get Tuchel signed to a contract immediately and pay Mainz some agreed to compensation, or else sign him up to a contract that starts on July 1st when his Mainz contract runs out.
Other German clubs are also interested in the 41 year-old, and he seems to be a sought after coach and well used to the continental way of managing a club, when he doesn’t have much say on transfers.
What do you think?
Comments welcome.

Comment #42Just reading through the comments, got me thinking who are the worst the pundits?
Merson comes across as an idiot with little football knowledge and is prob the worst.
Redknapp occasionally makes good points but loves the sound of his voice too much.
I do quite like Neville and Murphy. Shame Rob Lee isn’t on tv more he always seems to good analysis of games

You might not have to wait long for the first chuckle. PArdew’s only made it past the third round 3 times in 8 attempts since taking West Ham to the final. Dover Athletic away tomorrow for his Palace side….

But the requirement of the role were to spend as little as possible and when you pay peanuts you get monkeys.

Well Tony Pulis took palace over last year after a much worse start at they managed to come 12th in the end.
Let’s see if pardew manages to match that, that is the standard that has been set for him.
I honestly think he will take then down this season.

Comment #47I wonder why the club felt the need to inform us that fatty didn’t already know the king before he joined us? Why now? It’s only been 4 years of mistrust and/or rumours. It’s not as if they’d been specifically asked that question anytime recently is it.
An unprovoked response especially a denial, to a question never asked is usually a sign of someone or something feeling the need to “get it out there” as they feel guilty. Human nature. Is fatty human….maybe not then.

You were advising the ‘doubters to chill out’ and give the new manager some time,,,etc.
Thats fine, nobody could argue with that. I reckon though that the people who you describe as doubters about the timing of change which as yet still has no discernible direction, are much more likely to chill out and give the requisite time than the majority who have clamoured for Pardew to be sacked for at least the last 2 years. Some interesting sound bites since the weekend have been popping up declaring that any, or even no manager would do better than what we’ve had. These I assume are excited attempts at humour?
Ideal scenario would have been MA to sell in the next 12 months (its not looking impossible now) and new owners to send Pards off, with a planned / organised replacement, rather than this mess we have now on the cusp of yet another tfr window.

Does it indicate if Tuchel was looking for the chance to play in European competitions? If he was talking to other clubs he must have realised the limitations of Mainze and there is not much to prove we are a club with real ambition.

You guys over there should be happy with your TV pundits. Over here in Oz, we got a couple of absolute cretins, one being a former drug addict goalkeeper with the most annoying laugh in the world. The other being a totally idiotic numbskull with about as much knowledge about the game as a fcuking wombat…..ladies and gentlemen….I give you premiership winners Mark Bosnich and Robbie Slater……..LMAO
Secondly, having ripped off CP beautifully to the tune if 3.5 million quid, surely the Fat One could spend some of it in paying off the last 6 months of theTuchel contract. I doubt he will be on huge money at Mainz

I can’t speak on that club as know little of them, not sure the level of players or ambition.
Depends what motivates him, does he want a top top club or does he want a decent wage (prem pays high compared to other leagues, even us) and we still bring in plenty of quality players.
If pardew got 5th no reason a better manager couldn’t push for it, or even top 7/8 as that season some big clubs slipped up.

Comment #53Tuchel – good coach. Hjulmand (his successor) is unable to get anywhere near the same results from the team.

Comment #54Whether anybody thinks Tuchel is the bees kness and the right cailbre or not his win % is only 1.8% more than Pardew – so he is in the same middle group in performance. Moyes and McClaren are both about 45% so are real upgrades – the win stats don’t take style of play into account but then neither does the league position if you’re 18-20th

you have to take into account other factors
1) Tuchel is managing a very small team in the Bundesliga
2) Pardew has had a lot of cushy jobs where he has taken over a huge team that are in a low league with lots of money (Southampton in League 1, Reading & West Ham in Championship.) and I don’t think he took any of them up at first attempt.
3) Pardew doesn’t get many draws so his average points per match might be lower than you’d expect from that many wins.
4) McLaren has picked up almost all his wins in Dutch league and Championship and quite a few with England playing San Marino etc.
5) Pardew & McLaren play a dull style. Tuchel plays a modern high pressing, short passing game.

Comment #56this would be a major coup. a young tactical rising star???? heres why it happens. As we have just seen MASH can make money on value purchasing. He bought pardew because he was english and on decent wage (if we are to believe 500k). he REFUSED to fire him because he thought there could be a return on his investment. Now he can lock up Tuchel on a low wage, long term,. After he brings us top 6, he can scumbag him on the transfer window- have him look for a job and collect compensation. All in a days work. Lets enjoy the ride up.

Comment #59Lilongwe Geordie – spot on about the Mag – I used to write for them but threw in the towel when it became obvious that they had lost the plot and just seemed to be having their own internal competition to see who could be the most controversial while writing garbage with no basis.
Apart from that I suppose they are fine
