The Mail is reporting that Newcastle are interested in signing West Brom striker Brown Ideye, even though the Nigerian striker only joined the Midlands club from Dynamo Kiev in the summer.
Brown Ideye – 26 year-old West Brom striker
Newcastle have been interested in this striker since he was at Sochaux back in 2011, before he moved to the Ukrainian side in that summer.
The striker has had a hard time of it at West Brom since he arrived, with Saido Berahino getting most of the starts for the Baggies, and in 14 appearances for West Brom he has a couple of goals.
It seems that West Brom overpaid for Ideye in the summer when they paid out a club record £10M for the hit man who scored 45 goals in 107 appearances in the Ukraine, but he has made little impact in England.
Brown was very keen to join Newcastle a couple of years ago, in May, 2013 – when his agent Hootan Ahmad had this to say:
“There has been a lot of interest from English clubs, but Newcastle would be Brown’s preferred choice for a number of reasons.” “They have a good fan-base and play an attacking style of football. “
“He has good knowledge of the club and of the Premier League. Brown would love to test himself at that level.” “He would like to move to England and we will look at all our options in the summer.”
Ideye is very fast, but it would seem to be a huge risk for Newcastle to pay out big money for a striker who has struggled in the Premier League so far this season.
The 26 year-old 24 times capped Nigerian international was born in Lagos, and with rumors that new Baggies manager Tony Pulis could sell Berahino this month to fund new players coming into the club, Ideye may not even be available in january.
We’d be very surprised if Newcastle are really interested in buying this player this month.
Sunderland are also interested – and he may be a decent striker for them.
