Alan Pardew was long accused by Newcastle fans of being arrogant, and Alan always had a big opinion of himself and lots of confidence in his own abilities.
Alan Pardew at Dover – saluting the great Crystal Palace fans
But the former Newcastle manager has been roundly criticized by Dover Athletic Chairman Jim Parmenter today, who has accused Pardew of ebing arrogant – translation – he’s too big for his boots.
Crystal Palace beat Dover 4-0 away on Sunday in the 3rd round of the FA Cup, and apparently Pardew had complained it took him and his players 20 minutes to reach the ground after being dropped of at the coach drop-off point.
The is what Parmenter told The Sun today:
“It’s complete arrogance for him to expect us to make special arrangements just because it’s him.” “I don’t know what Pardew was doing for 20 minutes – you can crawl up there on all fours in a couple of minutes.”
When PL clubs visit the smaller clubs in the Cups, it’s very important to show them due respect – it’s the smaller clubs like Dover Athletic and their fans who make football great in England.
The Dover Chairman also complained that Pardew had been rude to his staff on his arrival.
This reminds us of a similar situation in the film The Damned United – which covered the amazing 44 days when Brian Clough was the Leeds United manager back in 1974.
In the film when Brian was still managing Derby County – Don Revie and his big shot Leeds United players had to walk from their coach to the Baseball Ground for an FA Cup tie, and they complained about it being too far for them to walk.
Maybe that’s what Pardew was thinking on Sunday, but of course he’s nowhere near as good as Brian Clough and Don Revie were as managers.
But maybe he thinks he is?
