The Telegraph has another report out today that says Mike Ashley may sell Newcastle United, but it’s quoting Newcastle legend Alan Shearer this time.
Mike Ashley – did Pardew leave because he’s selling?
It’s a comment we have already reported by Alan Shearer, but the Telegraph has put another twist on Alan’s words.
This is what Alan Shearer said about why Alan Pardew could have left so quickly to join Crystal Palace last week, and he’s talking initially about Ashley:
“He doesn’t speak to anyone, but there’s a small part of me that thinks he might have given Alan Pardew a nod [that he’s going to sell].”
“It did make me laugh when I heard people saying that Alan wouldn’t leave Newcastle to go to Crystal Palace.”
“There’s a million reasons why Alan would leave Newcastle to go to Crystal Palace – he’d be on a better salary at a football club where the fans would want him,
he would buy and sell the players he wanted.”“There’s three or four very, very good reasons to start with. That’s where Newcastle are as a football club I’m afraid. Not good news but we’re used to that.”
At the end of that first sentence the Telegraph inserted – [that he’s going to sell] – Alan didn’t actually say those words.
The Telegraph is also reporting there are rumours on Tyneside that prospective buyers have indeed approached Mike Ashley to discuss a potential buy-out of Newcastle United.
We haven’t heard that – but Telegraph Sport is reporting today they have been told by well-placed sources, that negotiations are in progress and the price of Newcastle is £250M – and that price would allow the owner to recuperate most of the money he has put into the club.
If a head coach is not appointed until the summer that would also suit the potential new owners – but this is not the first time the Telegraph has said Mike Ashley will sell the club, and they were banned some weeks ago for suggesting he would sell Newcastle to buy Glasgow Rangers.
Maybe it’s a case of putting two and two together and getting five?
But we see no reason why Ashley would want to buy Rangers and sell Newcastle – with the Scottish club playing in the 23rd ranked league in Europe.
Owning Rangers would hardly be a better proposition than owning Newcastle, who give Sports Direct free worldwide advertising and publicity via the most popular sports league in the world – the Premier League.
And Newcastle get anywhere between £60M and £100M every May from the Premier League, based essentially on where we finish in the league.
If this story in the Telegraph is not true, we would expect Newcastle to issue a statement fairly quickly, and the last we heard – the owner was definitely going to be in charge of Newcastle through the end of next season.
It may be deja vu all over again. 😀
We’ll see.

The costs would not be any more than Newcastle, and the CL games are extra games when Prem teams are not playing, as for coverage, well you said it yourself, they have a huge following in Asia.
Not saying he will sell us (that’s just my dream) just Rangers has a lot to offer him that Newcastle cannot with a similar or even cheaper outlay.
If it’s true that he can but Rangers for a pittance then it would make sense to sell Newcastle now as we are not going to progress any further for him (because of him). The costs of competing are to high for him. Rangers will give him cups and titles for the same or less outlay.

I would like nothing more than him to sell up.

Seems logical when I’ve looked at it, just a theory of course. Why don’t you think he could crack America? I thought they loved the pile it high, sell it cheap stores.

Comment #44Who honestly saw Pardew leaving for Palace until he left?
Nobody that’s who.
Everyone who’s saying Ashley isn’t leaving need to remember that.
Sooner or later he’s going, at the minute it’s pleasing me to think it’s sooner.
I haven’t quite convinced myself he’s definitely going yet but it’s a distinct possibility with all that is going on here and Rangers.

double your wages for how long though, im pretty sure he will be sacked in less than 2 years, MIKE was his gardian angel at our club. I don’t think palace fans will put with it as long as we did,
5 years left at our club and I think he would have seen it out,
I was talking to Ibiza the day P45 left, and I said the same as shearer, it all seems pretty strange for him to leave right now, he had a chance to go to the same club in the summer, he was hated just as much then as is he now.

If it’s outely numbers he’d get a lot more publicity for SD in the prem than he would off 6 champions league games where he couldn’t even advertise his store. Unless they played a top top side very few would watch worldwide.
As for costs, we are expected to make a 50mil profit in our accounts where rangers and Celtic lose money even when they are in the champions league.
With our 50mil profit we could easily buy 3/4 quality players to compete for top 4, still be very hard but possible same as Spurs/Southampton/etc

I agree. There are two changes from be summer though. He had a as run which could have got him a final warning (speculation) and also the fan protests really really ramped up.
He’s contracted for 3.5 years, 99% of sackings mean you get the full amount paid out, so there is his 7mil and it gets him home with his family.

Either that or make such huge profits elsewhere he can afford to undercut the competition and just break even/take a small loss to force competition to close.

Comment #62I don’t know where people are getting they’re information from, the money awarded by the PL far outweighs what a Scottish club would get in the CL due to the distibution of what a participating clubs particular countries TV rights are, Rangers do not not have a huge following in Asia and the SD coverage would not be allowed to be shown as it is not an official sponsor. At first I thought the shirt sponsorship might be his carrot but Magnerscider pay Celtic £1.5M per year, he’s not going to go to all that trouble for free advertising at that cost. My only hunch is that he’s gambling on there being a European sper league and hoping Rangers might be part of it, if it cost him 30M in total for a club that could be worth hundreds of millions then it’s better than one of his nights in the casino.

Comment #63I think he bought it for a “bit of fun” and then realized what a nightmare owning Newcaslte was – lets face it, owning any club opens you up to criticism even if you spend zillions like Chelsea.
That said, he had licked it into shape by making it profitable through cost control, buying players on an anticipated increase in value and getting rid of highly paid older players bar the likes of Collo. We have the youngest squad in the league apparently!
He likely gives it little attention; turns up to a match when he fancies it, deals with some of the bigger decisions and that is it.
If someone makes him an offer that meets his valuation, I am sure he will sell. In the meantime, he is having coast along as being a well run club (financially) until that day.
My guess is that sooner or later someone with enough money and desperate enough to own a PL club will come along and give him what he is asking.
Rangers may or may not be part of that equation. The only reason I think he is interested in Rangers is because he sees it as a distressed asset. Nowt to do with commercial opportunities in CL, Sports Direct or apparel.
That said, those angles with be exploited should he take charge.

Comment #65When Remi Garde took charge of Lyon this season, he was given a one-year contract, told he had no money to spend and inherited a squad low on morale following a tough season under the rigid leadership of former coach Claude Puel.
Several months later, Garde has restored team spirit, has the team playing attractive, attacking football, and successfully blended in youth players while instilling a resilient streak that was lacking under Puel.

Comment #66So what’s different under Garde? “The spirit,” Bosnian midfielder Miralem Pjanic frankly tells FOXSoccer.com after the game. “Simply, our game has changed. We play a lot more football, and we have a lot more freedom. The coach has put it in our heads that we can play.
Sounds good to me

Comment #69We need the FatMan to progress some sort of deal for Rangers – for the commercial reasons states previously – and then he will be forced to sell NUFC 🙂
Could be that this is already underway – I guess he would have to sell first before he could buy to keep the SFA happy – so a bit of a Mexican standoff. Cant buy but wants to. Can sell but not for the crazy money he wants.

You do realise the club would have been profitable under Freddt Sheperds spending given the new money from the new TV deal.
The new TV money is the only reason, our costs are under control…and the fact ashley has doubled the debt on the club to hide the cost of relegation.

Comment #74beefman…it was not so much the carte blanch I was hinting at, merely that I believe no player should be forced upon a manager. The manager should have the final say whether or not he wants that player.
When a potential shotlist is drawn up the manager should be able to say “I want that player” – it doesn’t mean of course he will get that player that will be for the board to decide. The financial side of it call be a stumbling block.
The point of the story I posted was a reference to old story about Celtic. I am just going to reference it:
“When appointed Celtic manager in 1965, he was asked to speak to his board about what the team should be for the following Saturday, which so happened to be his first game in charge.
Stein explained this was a difficult one to answer because a certain player was doubtful, another had a cold, there was one more who might be okay but he needed another 24 hours.
“What you are telling us,” said his chairman Sir Robert Kelly, “is to mind our own business.”
Stein said yes and that weekend he became one of the few managers in British football at that time to select the team without interference from his board. Two years later he won the European Cup.”

I saw that earlier, too. It shows what effect board interference can have. Some clubs are run in a shocking way when it comes to the football side, and NUFC is one of them.
