Newcastle were interested in Storting Lisbon winger Diego Capel last season, but it seems that the £5M price tag on his head at that time, was too much for owner Mike Ashley.
Diego Capel – Sporting Lisbon winger for sale
Diego has played for all the Spanish Youth sides – from U16 through U23, and he made 61 appearances for the Youth sides and also has two full caps.
He was brought through the Sevilla youth system as a youngster, and he made his debut for Sevilla at age 17, and played 173 times for the club with 12 goals before joining Sporting Lisbon in 2011 on a five year contract.
And in three seasons in Lisbon he has made 114 appearances with 15 goals.
The 26 year-old is in the news again because Sporting Lisbon have put him up for sale, according to reports coming out of Spain.
Sporting Lisbon are not flush with money, and it appears they want to get his high wages off the wage bill.
But we don’t think that Newcastle’s top priority these days is a winger, with youngsters like Rolando Aarons and Callum Roberts coming through the ranks, and Sammy Ameobi too, although he has again been hit by injury, and is not expected back until the end of this month from a knee injury.
And Gabby Obertan has had his best season for a while until he got injured, and the Frenchman is expected back in training early next month, from his torn thigh muscle.
Newcastle need a center-back and a striker brought in this January as the top priorities.
And as for wingers, we have been strongly linked with AC Milan 20 year-old youngster M’Baye Niang, and he wants to join Newcastle, and would seem to be a better bet and also cheaper than Capel.
So we’d be surprised if Newcastle make any move for Diego Capel.
