When Sir Bobby Robson was managing the club, Freddy Shepherd was the Newcastle Chairman and John Carver was Bobby’s assistant manager, and the team did very well over five years from 1999.
Freddy Shepherd – former Newcastle Chairman
The only poor year was in Bobby’s second season, when we had a lot of injuries including striker Alan Shearer being out for most of the season – but in the next season we finished in 4th place in the Premier League with 71 points.
The Former Newcastle United Chairman has today called on Newcastle owner Mike Ashley to give Geordie John Carver the head coach’s position on a full-time basis.
This is what Freddie ha said this morning on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show:
“I just hope John gets the job. I think he is worth giving him the chance.” “He is an experienced guy, he is a Geordie, and I think he should be given the chance.”
“It would be good for the club and good for the country, because we are getting too many European managers in.”
Not many Newcastle fans want John in as the new head coach – maybe because he’s untested at the highest levels and it would be a big risk?
But whoever is appointed as the new head coach he will need the support from the fans, because whoever it is he will want to do very well in the job – and that’s what the fans also want.

Comment #41FFS is hoping Carver will take us down so hopefully he can get us back a bit cheaper, nearly as bad as Ashley, at least he wanted to win something though.

I agree a little bit of dissent could go a long way; There is no logical reason this seeking a new head coach should take so long, other than to try and blind the faithful multitude to the real reasons of no player signings, and installing that Geordie group of Carve-up and the woodstones as the new coaching team, (or old coaching team).
Thing is no one is buying it, save for a couple of misguided people who can only remember their name because people shout it at them all day.

Comment #45Gomis would fit – especially if we had Garde as manager. But you have to suspect that he’d only come in if the deal could be synchronised with Cisse out… The Ashley theory seems to be that you don’t need strength in depth if you avoid unnecessary extra matches – like all those Europa matches a couple of years ago that maybe contributed to a 41 point finish. So, probably no striker in unless Cisse goes. Meanwhile, on the season, I don’t agree that avoiding relegation would be a triumph. Finishing below midtable will be a disaster. My guess, under Carver, 43 points, maybe 45.

I agree Cisse one way, Gomis the other, but Mashers will want some of that Bony cash so that could scupper any deal.

Gomis is a none starter mate.
He is 29 years old, to expensive, requires huge wages, and offers us nothing new. He could not get into the Swans team.
We need his type of player, strong, can hold up the ball, and bring in the forwards while allowing the midfield to press more, but we do not need him.
But it’s irrelevant in any case because Ashley will not pay out any money for him.

Comment #55Would it be of any benefit to us for Celtic to loan us Virgil van Dijk?
It would certainly push up his value, hopefully solidify our defense and not block Satka/Good/Lascelle next season. The potential improvement in transfer value should offset any loan cost to us.

If we bought Virgil van Dijk instead, when Lascelles comes in next season we could ship Williamson out and still have room for development players to come in.

Comment #57Surely NUFC have 2 choices. 1) Appoint Carver and have done with it
2) Accept that the man they want will not start until the season ends and announce Carver as “Caretaker” until end of season.
There would then be nothing to stop them signing up who they want, to effectively take up his post on, say, 1st June 2015.
Its not rocket science, its actually fairly simple – why all this farting about, other than creating smoke screens for no real benefit!!!

Comment #59IMO someone like Saido Berahino would be a better option as a striker, as he is quicker at taking his chances and more difficult to mark. There is a natural attraction to a large centre forward but I don’t think a static player is part of the modern game. Some one who transcends the category is Christian Benteke as he also has good movement as well as strength.

Comment #63Id rather carver gets it till the end of the season if thats when the right man like tuchel or de boer is available rather than give the wrong man like sherwood or labbadia a 2-3 year deal now!
If by the end of the season JC has done so well that they have no choice but to give him the job then all the better, itl mean we have a good manager who understands the ub, if he does awful then at least we can start next season with a good manager

Agree Williamson should not be at the club and should have been transferred on a ‘high’ at the end of last season. Steven Taylor and Collocini have been on the way out for too long and should have replacements already in place. It was said by some one else but we have the same central defense as when were relegated!

I agree mate, I just know the club will not pay the asking price, greed takes priority over common sense at our club, saving money and making profits are the only things deemed successful.
That is why we will be making no effort this month to strengthen the team, or bring in a worthwhile head coach.

Comment #69Why does the fact he’s a Geordie come into it? Why is there always this clamour for a local coach? I wouldn’t put any less effort into my job because I’m not from the area I work in. Just get someone qualified, passionate and tactically astute. No matter where they’re from. Remember that this ‘wisdom’ comes from a man who didn’t even bother negotiating salaries when he signed players (remember Albert Luque’s story about his transfer?) and slagged off Geordies. Oh, and he’s the man who sacked Sir Bobby. He’s a fool.

You know when I listen to people who say Ashley does not take any money out of the club, it boils my pi$$.
Look at the evidence, and I am by no means an expert here but:
Mash Holdings has sold the land that was adjacent to and belonged to Newcastle United, the only beneficiary from that transaction is Mash Holdings.
The £70 million debt we had with Barclay’s Bank is now £140 million owed to Ashley.
The advertising revenue from the hoardings around the ground is 0% to Newcastle, as this is given FREE to Sports Direct to offset the interest we would have to pay to Ashley on the £140 million loan he gave to himself….(sorry the club)
The revenue from merchandising, (e.g. replica shirts, mugs, scarves, flags etc,) all goes to Sports Direct who control all of our merchandising.
So where does he not take money out of the club?

This is where divergence occurs and where unity evaporates, because people who say he is ‘pocketing’ money get an equally adverse reaction from me. But it is enough to say that he owns and runs the club to the maximum benefit of himself.
I would argue that he could improve the benefit to himself by spending more of the clubs own capital, generating greater turnover and improving community cohesion.
