Newcastle In Talks To Sell Midfielder in January

There are reports out today that Arsenal are considering bidding £9M for Newcastle defensive midfielder Cheick Tiote, and there have also been reports the Gunners could also be interested in Moussa Sissoko, as they need to add some steel to their central midfield.

Cheick Tiote – wanted by Arsenal

There is a report in the Star today that Arsenal have entered into talks to buy Cheick Tiote, who is with the Ivory Coast squad in Equatorial Guinea and in their first game yesterday against Guinea and they drew 1-1 with the Newcastle midfielder playing the wholes game.

It was a game they were expected to win, but they had Gervinho sent off after he had hit Alhassane Keita with his hand.

The Star is reporting that talks have already been held with Cheick’s representatives, and that the Ivorian wants £80K/week to move to the north London club.

With Mehdi Abeid showing some great form for Newcastle in central midfield this season, and back fit again after recovering from a broken toe, the way Newcastle think – they could sell Cheick this month and assume Mehdi can take over for the rest of the season, and we still have Vurnon Anita available.

But Newcastle are still not safe yet from relegation, and January is never a good time to sell when it’s always very difficult to replace a player – but in this case Newcastle will think they don’t need a replacement brought in.

Newcastle have already lost their manager Alan Pardew in January, and it would be risky and short-sighted to sell Cheick Tiote to Arsenal.

We hope it doesn’t happen, but we can see that Newcastle could think there is little risk in getting £9M more in the coffers and therefore the 28 year-old could be sold.

Newcastle have to start thinking more of the squad than just money, and maybe a policy should be we never to sell top players in January?

At least in the summer we will have time to replace them and other clubs will be more willing to sell their players.

And it’s difficult to even think we could sell Moussa Sissoko this month – no – that will never happen – not even at Newcastle.

That’s true, isn’t it? 🙁

    There we are, to paraphrase….

    “No new players this month”
    “No new manager until summer”
“Will sell ANY player this month for the right price”

    Relegated.

I agree with what you say on the last thread. If Tiote goes, we have enough in MF to cover. Any jard working tackler would suffice until Summer (Jonas back in the side at DMF anyone? 😀 ). A big, intelligent, comanding CB is a priotity and i would be happy for the 9M to be spent on one of them instead. Would that happen though? Under Mash i doubt it.

Don’t sell Siss. He’ll be better than Toure (who was worse at his age)

    Sounds about right.

Ashley thinks we have enough points … sell sell sell.

Screw the season ticket holders who have to watch more second-half of the season dross.

No cups to play for … we’re playing for eighth spot at best …

    This is every season.

    Don’t give Ashley your money!

For me loan deal work if we have an option to buy, problem is our club always seem to be doing things the hard way.

Loic Remy never wanted to play for us in the first place, and was never going to stay, we miss his goal though. I think Luuk de Jong would have stayed, but because the inept one used him out of position, when he actually got on the field he looked jaded, his link up play between midfield and attack was pretty good, and he set up a few chances that others missed, but we decided no deal.

I would love Walcott to come here, but I just don’t see him as a player who would want to stay with us, and I think his loan fees and wages would have Ashley in to a state of shear panic, or selling of a few more shares so he can calm himself cuddling into his green stuff.

The policy in January of not buying is one thing, but we should not sell either! Maybe a policy of “if we sell a key player, we at LEAST replace his presence, even if we can’t replace his skill/influence”

I would take Arsenal’s hands off for that sort of money, if only for the reason that Abeid is now ready, and keeping Mr Clumsy Bollix (the sulky yellow card collector) in the DM position would stifle the young Algerians progress.
Abeid has waited patiently, and has shown the form he is capable of versus Man City and Liverpool most notably. The lad is a ready made (and better) replacement for Chieck Knackernuts who gives the ball away far too easily and carelessly in very dangerous positions, for my liking. We simply missed the boat on a big pay day on Tiote, and that’s the truth. Three years ago, he looked the real deal. However, he is now a liability and needs jettisoned.

Luuk de Jong … sorry. He had his chance. Couldn’t hit a barn door …

Look at Perez, he looks the part whether on the wing or in the centre, he’s a talented striker who knows where the goal is.

Luuk de Jong never showed much at all.

Apparently Bigi played very well for the U21’s last night again. That will likely figure into the clubs thinking if a bid does materialise for either Tiote or Sissoko.

    Firebug,
I wouldn’t want to be paying a loan fee, it should be built in to any transfer. I would never expect anything permanent from it.

On LDJ, Pardew set him up for a fall by claiming he was a natural goalscorer. He isn’t. He gets goals in the Dutch league, but so do a lot of people and his record is far inferior to people like Altidore.

I would take 9 mill for Tiote, we have had a few decent seasons out of him and I would give Abeid a chance, Abeid seems to be able to get forward a bit more, he is definitely more mobile than tiote and age is on his side

So Arsenal are thinking of Tiote and Sissoko both to warm their bench. However this type of tactic by the top 4 clubs is designed to restrict the ambition and ability of other following clubs to catch up with them and protects their own self importance. It’s a cartel and money talks. That apart if Tiote goes to enable us to keep Sissoko so be it. At least when De Jong is back, Abeid is fit and we have a new CB and CF and not least of all a new Coach – all before the relegation battle looms then we should be fine, shouldn’t we ?

I’ve no problem selling Tiote IF we then spent that money on, say, a centre back. But we won’t we’ll just sit on the cash making the profit/loss accounts look even better.

I’d take 9m for Tiote if it meant using ALL the money on replacing him with Van Dijk (because you know we can’t have more than 25 players)!!

After the collapse last season I honestly cannot understand the club think we can limp through the second half of the season with only 2 recognised centre backs and a caretaker manager with a record of 9 losses, 1 win and 1 draw!!

We will be relegated if they don’t do something now!

no offence to tiote as he’s a really good player but imo he’s the weak link in our very good midfield.

sissoko is our best cm and if lost it will be a huge loss though.

our cm should be sissoko/colback and either abied or siem depending on the formation and use bigi as cover for injuries.

i’d even be tempted to use colo as dm as think he’d be great there but not good enough to be the last man

tiote has had some seriously dodgy games for us this season. vs burnley he was making mistakes all over, 1st minute letting burnley get in and luckily just hit the bar.

I think we’d be better letting him go IF we buy a prem experienced centre back.

Tiote would not be a great loss in my eyes, something along the lines of this would probably work better

    Krul
    Janmaat Colo Dummett Hairdara
    Colback Sissoko
    Ayoze/Aarons De Jong Cabella
    Ayoze/Cisse

Would prefer Ayoze up top but Aarons is never fit and hes not yet proven, having said that we have obertan and gouffran as back up.

This team is very adaptable so we can change through a game if we are getting problems, ie De Jong can go up top with other CF, cabella and Aarons can swap flanks, Sissoko can play anywhere in midfield, Dummett can play left back, Janmaat can play centre half, so there is cover within the team itself

This would be my strongest team IMO, so Tiote dont fit in anyway

£9M is probably good business. Tiote has given good service but is short on discipline in several ways.

robertsleftfoot: you really think sissoko can play in CM. I think people are operating the guy. The man is a one man steam engine, used to run at defenses. Yet, his touch and passing as well with positioning in CM doesn’t work. He is very limited and the last few games since Cabella has been on form and Sissoko has had to cover. Sissoko hasn’t looked good.

Whats concerning is when De Jong comes back and Cabella is on the right. Sissoko will have to play CM and I think it will uneven the balance in the team as he doesn’t have the positional sense even. I would sell Sissoko for $15-20 mill is a second. We need passers and organization. Cabeye, Schederlain, Kroos are hard to come by.

As for Tiote, sure I’d sell him. Still a good play but we are moving in a different direction and him and Colback can’t play together. It gives us no passing range or creativity. Colback is already Tiotes replacement. Still need Cabeyes.

Better team without Tiote, bite their hands off @£9000000. Abeid has footballing guile which C.T. doesn’t .Siss. will be a big loss though

ON the contrary Ed, the fact that the manager has gone would probably be the ideal time to sell Tiote because a new manager coming in (of course with the exception of Carver) would not miss him.
