There are reports out today that Arsenal are considering bidding £9M for Newcastle defensive midfielder Cheick Tiote, and there have also been reports the Gunners could also be interested in Moussa Sissoko, as they need to add some steel to their central midfield.
Cheick Tiote – wanted by Arsenal
There is a report in the Star today that Arsenal have entered into talks to buy Cheick Tiote, who is with the Ivory Coast squad in Equatorial Guinea and in their first game yesterday against Guinea and they drew 1-1 with the Newcastle midfielder playing the wholes game.
It was a game they were expected to win, but they had Gervinho sent off after he had hit Alhassane Keita with his hand.
The Star is reporting that talks have already been held with Cheick’s representatives, and that the Ivorian wants £80K/week to move to the north London club.
With Mehdi Abeid showing some great form for Newcastle in central midfield this season, and back fit again after recovering from a broken toe, the way Newcastle think – they could sell Cheick this month and assume Mehdi can take over for the rest of the season, and we still have Vurnon Anita available.
But Newcastle are still not safe yet from relegation, and January is never a good time to sell when it’s always very difficult to replace a player – but in this case Newcastle will think they don’t need a replacement brought in.
Newcastle have already lost their manager Alan Pardew in January, and it would be risky and short-sighted to sell Cheick Tiote to Arsenal.
We hope it doesn’t happen, but we can see that Newcastle could think there is little risk in getting £9M more in the coffers and therefore the 28 year-old could be sold.
Newcastle have to start thinking more of the squad than just money, and maybe a policy should be we never to sell top players in January?
At least in the summer we will have time to replace them and other clubs will be more willing to sell their players.
And it’s difficult to even think we could sell Moussa Sissoko this month – no – that will never happen – not even at Newcastle.
That’s true, isn’t it? 🙁
