Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa made his 20th appearance for Roma tonight, and Football Italia is reporting that means the Italian club must now buy him on a permanent basis from Newcastle United.
Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa – will be signing for Roma according to reports
If the news is to be believed, then the loan agreement between Newcastle and Roma included a clause making it mandatory for Roma to buy the French International once he had played 20 times for Roma.
The buy-out amount is thought to be around €7M – and using today’s exchange rate with the euro – that’s about £5.25M.
In tonight’s game Mapou started for Roma at Fiorentina, and as we write this the score after 65 minutes is 1-1.
Newcastle’s Managing Director Lee Charnley said that he didn’t expect to sell any players in this January transfer window in his interview in the Chronicle last Tuesday night – and apparently the Q&A was at his request.
This is how he answered the question – will Newcastle sell any players?
“I would never, ever rule out selling anyone because the worst thing I could do is over-promise and under-deliver. You will never, ever get me saying never but I would say we’re very difficult sellers.”
“We make it very difficult for people to get our players. We put them on long-term contracts. We are not easy sellers, despite that perception. As we sit here today I can’t envisage any player we want to retain leaving.”
We assume Mapou is not one of the players Newcastle want to retain this month, so we may hear soon that the French defender is no longer a Newcastle player and has signed for Roma.
Mapou signed on for Newcastle two years ago from Montpellier, and he made 46 appearances for the Newcastle first team, but the Frenchman found it difficult to adjust to the rigors of the English Premier League.

Comment #9I’ve just seen the Bradford chairman on sky sports news talking about the FA cup win over chelsea.
He was praising his players for getting through to the next round, he said he didn’t care about what happens in the league now after such a success and is focused on the cup.
I’m so glad we are lucky to have an owner who doesn’t believe in such foolish things. Ashley knows us fans don’t want a trip to wembley, 10th in the prem league and the 3rd round of the FA cup is more than enough.
We are so lucky.

Comment #10I think the fan base has already thrown the towel in, so the white hanky of surrender will come as no shock to the Fat Farm. Anyway, won’t hanky waving look a bit… girly?

I’ve been saying this all day, so sorry if you or others have seen it. I think we need to hit rock bottom before we react to the problem, happens with a lot of addictions (and a lot have one of wanting to support their team n the pitch above anything else).
I think that time is coming, the media are even highlighting problems with the club now, so hopefully we are near that point.

Comment #19i believe i am well within my rights, judging by what we know now about ashley and his one and only intention when he bought the club being to rip the soul out of our beloved club and use it to fund SD – T o call anyone who offers ashley more money to ” finish us off ” ie buying season tickets or merchandise from his shops —idiots.

Comment #21Of course the QA session was convened at Ashley’s mouthpiece Charnley’s request. That’s why the local press was invited back into the fold – to ‘ask’ the questions that Charnley had the pre-prepared answers for!
Talk about North Korea? Ashley’s got to be serious challenger for the world’s greatest tyrant and propagandist!

Comment #22Roma are welcome. I never thought much of Yanga M’Biwa anyway, tbh. Just the thoughts of another 5.5 million to add to the 3mil Palace paid for Pards brings us that bit closer to top 4 in the next Deloitte and Latouche league table. Sweet.
By the way, as Carr is portrayed as a kind of genius and Chinless is just basically an accountant doing his job, and the new Head Coach won’t have any say in transfers in and out, if we continue to be crap, whose fault is it? We are told Carr bought so called ‘technical’ players (I mean, technically, Fecundo Ferreya is a player, isn’t he?) while Pards, we hear, preferred a bit more blood and thunder, up and under. So if we get another M’Biwa or a Ferreya or another shot-shy Riviere, is Carr to be bulletproof now because the coach isn’t playing them right?
And likewise, if the ‘structure, philosophy, culture and long-term strategy keeps us mired in the bottom half (as 5 of the 7 Ashley Years have) can we expect Chinless to walk? How exactly are fans to evaluate their performances? And if the Manager/Coach can’t get success out of a bunch of players he didn’t choose and didn’t choose to sell halfway through the season, can he really be expected to carry the can for it by himself? Just because he has to front-up for the cameras each week, he’s going to invite the ire of fans while Carr is never seen and Charnley (almost) never speaks. This is a ridiculous situation.

Comment #23Grasping at straws for a cheap shot there Ed?
Yanga-Mbiwa has been on loan since September and was always on his way out. He is obviously not a player we want to keep so Charnley was 100% honest and accurate in his statement, “As we sit here today I can’t envisage any player we want to retain leaving”.
Add to that that he’ll hardly be missed and we’re just arguing semantics here.
Of course – now that Pardew has gone we all have to find someone to hate, and as there is no manager yet we’ll just go for Charnley, because that’s what the mob will do.

Comment #24I hope no one is going to seriously try telling me that Yanga Mbiwa is NOT a better defender than Williamson???? Jesus Christ, Willo should be nowhere near the Premier League.
