Mike Ashley bought Newcastle United back in June of 2007, a couple of months after we started this blog, and since then we have completed seven full seasons under Mike Ashley and in the Premier League have only two top ten finishes to show for it – both under Alan Pardew.
Lee Charnley and Mike Ashley
We point that out because lately we hear the goal of the club is to finish in the top ten in the Premier League – but for all except two seasons in the last seven we haven’t been able to do that.
Newcastle even managed to get relegated in Ashley’s second season in charge, when we had all of four managers in one season – Kevin Keegan, Joe Kinnear, Chris Hughton and Alan Shearer – and that alone helped us to get relegated for the first time ever from the Premier League – with only 34 points from our 38 games.
[table “31” not found /]We came straight back up from the Championship in the next season with a record 102 points under manager Chris Hughton, but then Chris was fired the following December.
So under Mike Ashley we have had six full seasons in the Premier League and we have averaged around 46 points in those six seasons.
That would have had us in 11th place last season, joint 9th the season before and 13th the season before that – so with our average points total we are somewhere just below mid table.
With the actual points we have gained each season Newcastle have finished twice in the top 10 since 2007, and four times in the bottom half of the Premier League.
And when we were 5th in 2012 we had 65 points, 16 points more than we have gained in any other PL season under Mike Ashley. 🙁
Those are very sobering statistics for Mike Ashley’s Newcastle, and this season we’ll be lucky if we can make the top 10, and at the moment we are in 11th place on 27 points from 22 games – but it seems we will need to make do with a caretaker manager – probably John Carver – through the rest of the season.
Can you think of any other club in the Premier league who would make do with a caretaker manager because they let their manager go in mid-season (for compensation of course), and then couldn’t find a good enough replacement to take over before the summer?
And can you think of any other Premier League club that have sold their very best player in the January transfer window for big bucks and not replaced them.
Neither can we – because no other club would be that daft – but we’ve done that three times in the last four years.
That is very sadly the way Newcastle United is being run by Mike Ashley, and we often wonder why he ever bought Newcastle United – what’s he getting out of it?
The only way we can see Newcastle becoming successful under Ashley, is if the owner agrees to invest all the big money we are making these days from the Premier League, back into the club in terms of improving the facilities, but most of all in improving the squad and buying good players and keeping them.
But we just cannot see that happening somehow.

Comment #84Yes it is serious jesper mate. I am very worried about the club. We are taking a serious beating. It’s bad for the whole city. Jimiley thinks we will be relegated. I won’t go that far but we’re pathetic. As jimiley says “only a brain dead owner would give the job to Carver McNumpty. And what is the board doing? Why bother having one?

Comment #86I see Mbiwa is in Roma’s line up tonight I think that will be 20 appearances now which as I’ve seen reported will activate the clause where they have to purchase….if it exists!

Comment #87What’s Lee Chumpley up to now? Has he found a really cheap, useless head coach for us yet? If not isn’t he being overpaid Ashley? Think about it Mike. This is a perfect opportunity to dock his wages.

Comment #89So Mbwia goes to Roma and 5M plus 3M for Pardew, only a 24 man squad, if Carvers asked about a CB he’ll say he hasn’t had time to speak to Churnley or Carr, nobody left to answer questions. We might get a bullet point Q&A delivered by the clubs new media darlings.

Comment #95Personally disappointed if Mbiwa does go, he was never really given a fair chance here to settle into the pace of the prem at cb.
Being ridiculously overly optimistic here but if he does go this window permanently to Roma would like to see them go back in for Van Dijk.

Comment #96Press in general suddenly seem to have seen how bad things are here. Although i wholeheartedly disagree with the glowing opinions they have of Pardew if that makes people see Ashley & the running of this club for what it truly is then so be it.

Comment #97M’biwa wasn’t named in our 25 man squad, I would be highly surprised if they see him leaving permanently as needing a replacement, even though everyone knows we URGENTLY need a centre back.

Comment #99The more I hear about this Thomas Tuchel the more he is the one I want brought in, above Garde and De Boer. The Dutch sometimes have an arrogance about them, which is almost British like, which I think could be disastrous under Ashley. I have Dutch relatives by the way, lovely people but generally very confident and yes, sometimes arrogant. Anyone remember the last Dutch boss we have? Arrogant to say the least and de Boer is the same, no doubt a better ‘coach’ mind, but arrogant none the less

I can see the two being linked.
The press aware of what a shambles of a management set up we have, are in admiration of AP for the way he has stuck it for four years, has averaged a mid table finish and left at a time of his own choosing.

Comment #103Anyone remember when the renaming of sjp to the SD arena was explained as a necessary means to showcase the ground naming rights as a necessary lifeblood revenue stream for the same of keeping the club in profit? Training the expectation of the fans to accept the unacceptable. Same with Lee Charnley s statement re the necessity for a coach to accept what he’s given to work with as the money grabbers deem fit. Training us to accept the unacceptable.

Comment #104I would say they are in awe of the way Pardew blagged his way through so many inconsistent seasons and still managed to bale before they had the inclination to sack him. Pardew was part of the problem, not a victim.

Comment #113The best thing about Pardew walking and not getting his grovelling arse kicked outwas not the 3M compo for Mashleys holiday fund but the fact that it’s forced Churnley into making a statement which in turn has highlighted to the majority of sports writers and journalists what a shambles we have become. And for the record I’m more looking forward to the unknown than plodding along half season to season with that absolutely diabolical football we’ve endured.

Comment #119I think that the seeds of discontent about Mr Tubbs running of the club appear to have been sown among some of the sporting press. Surely it can only blossom from here to further negative press – fuelled by the Rangers carryon.
Checked out the sackpardew site a couple of days ago – looks like they forwarded remaining cash/funds to a charity. Plus no updates about their intentions.

Comment #120Rumours emerging of Mourinho targeting Sissoko if he can’t land his South American first choice.
I’ve also read that the €10m bid we put in for Andre Carrillo from Sporting has been rejected as it falls just short of the €30m buy-out clause in his contract… Ashley up to his old tricks again!
