There’s news tonight that Newcastle United will make Steve McClaren their No 1 target for head coach after they appointed caretaker manager John Carver today, as the head coach through the end of the season.
Steve McClaren – Newcastle’s top choice?
We knew that Mike Ashley seemed to like appointing English managers to the position, and of course Steve McClaren is English and known for his disastrous spell as the England manager, when he failed to get England qualification for Euro 2008.
That was the first time since 1994 that England had not qualified for a major tournament, and the first time in 24 years that they had not qualified for the European Championships.
After failing to qualify, the FA held an emergency meeting at which McClaren was removed from the post of England manager along with his assistant manager Terry Venables.
To be fair to Steve, since then he has been slowly recreating his career in football, and has done well with Derby County, but Derby County are a lot easier club to manage than Newcastle United.
Just as England was too big a job for Steve, we think Newcastle United will be too big for him as well.
And if McClaren gets Derby promoted to the Premier League then he is expected to want to stay with his current club and Newcastle will move to somebody else.
The Star is reporting that coaches on the short list also include Frank de Boer of Ajax, Christope Gaultier of St Etienne, Thomas Tuchel, the former Mainz coach and former Lyon coach, Remi Garde,
The news tonight is that McClaren is said to be particularly close to Chief Scout Graham Carr who, along with Managing Director Lee Charnley, have been given the job to find a new head coach, and both the Mail and Star are reporting he will be the top choice.
We don’t know if the report is based on inside information of if it’s a glorified guess as to what may happen.
We’d be disappointed if Steve is the top choice, because we’d like to see a top continental coach take charge of Newcastle.
Since the position is that of head coach and not manager, the abilities of the coach are of paramount importance.
We ‘re not sure that Steve McClaren is that person – but we could be wrong.

Comment #41Its clearly Carr’s pick as Charnley knows FA so if McLaren and GC are buddies its as good a s done. Ashley also always prefers to appoint ‘grateful’ employees. The idea of a bolshie de Boer or a French manager with an intimidating intellect and strong opinions on how to run football clubs spells trouble to Monster Mash and Chinless Charnley who rate compliance above creativity.

Agent penfolds answer to question 2 last week…
2) Has there been interest in the job?
We’ve had about 80 applications of people interested in the role. That’s people within football.
Clearly a number of those can be easily discounted but what has been left is a good number of individuals who have different qualities, experience and strengths – some of those are willing and available to come now, others not until the summer.
The important thing to stress here is that there is a process I have been working through the same as I would if I were looking for any other senior member of staff. It’s not a case of someone getting the job because he’s a friend of a friend or he knows someone.
It is a proper structured process which I believe will in the end give us the best individual for the job. When we put the statement out when Alan left we chose our words very carefully in terms of what we would be looking for as a replacement.
If maclaren gets it just on say so of carr then charnley has lost all credibility less than a year into his job

Fresh ideas they certainly would bring for all the good it would do them. The current regime have selective deafness to anything that would actually be of use. All they’d get is frustration at not being able to do what they want to. Any decent career minded coach is not going to want a barr of us and that’s the sad truth.
One Fine Day,
how many of those 80 applications do you reckon were from ball boys and stewards? Technically they count as being “in football” hell the lass in the pie shop could qualify under that banner. Strong tactician, give her a shout.

Comment #50He’s probably a better coach than Pardew, so in that sense he’d be a step forward, although certainly not in any way a giant leap. More likely one that would only serve to maintain our unwanted record of greatest under achievement in elite English sport, which I’m afraid we by now must surely claim hands down.

Comment #55When will this bloody nightmare end?
Now Carver’s in we see the end.
The powers that be have bled us dry.
While we just sit around and sigh.
So what is left for us sorry fans,
While Ashley’s laughs and rubs his hands.
He’s taken all we have to give,
Our heart, our soul, and our dignity.
The advertising in our ground,
Is free for all the world around,
Not a penny do we receive,
As Sports Direct add to their greed.
And what about shirts, scarves and cups?
They belong to Sports Direct not us.
But still the fans flock through the gates,
Another disappointing game awaits.
The inept one’s off to pastures new,
At palace we bid him adieu.
The fans are split, it’s nothing new,
We were split before we lost Pardew.
No players in, some players out,
It’s what making money is all about,
No strikers up front, or defenders at back,
no wonder the futures looking black.
So what now for Newcastle Fans?
Shall we sit at home and wring our hands?
Or shall we unite in one loud voice?
And tell them Ashley’s not out choice.
To band together and act as one,
Until Ashley and Sports Direct have gone.
Or stay divided on our road,
and watch our beloved club erode.

Comment #60Isn’t that the point of a blog? It’s the cyberspace version of the snug in the Workmans Club. Except you can stay on and drink as long as you like!!
I think it’s the frustration of not really being able to do anything to change the situation that causes most people on here to let rip.
I’m honestly open to any sensible suggestions but short of all chipping in and buying the big guy out, what can we do. All that carry on at the ground before from the SackPardew lot just made us look like Tw#ts. Fair play to them though at least they had a go!

Rangers fans protested outside of SD shops and Ashley handed back the naming rights to Ibrox that he had purchased for £1.
The only way to get Ashley’s attention would be to get at his SD empire.
We have thousands of fans spread out across our country as well as the rest of the world.
If the fans could be united under one banner, and then through coordination, peaceful demonstrations could take place outside of most major SD outlets around the country.
Hackers (probably for over seas) could take down the SD website at the same time, protests could take place inside and outside the club.
The derogatory appalling conditions woman and children have to work in making SD cheap tat in sweat houses for approximately £1 a week could be highlighted.
The one thing Ashley cannot stand is bad publicity, (hence banning the media), and the shareholders at SD would not want to be associated with it either.
With a united fan base and structured, coordinated demonstrations, Ashley would sell up, not just from the pressure of the fans, but also from the SD board members.

It was funny that the Rangers fans were going into the SD shop and picking up all sorts of stuff, then going to the till and offering them £1, and there was a long line of fans to get through.
Yes I have gave this a great deal of thought, unfortunately we lack leaders that could bring the fans together.
This was the problem last time, fans walking out of the ground, but at two different time, not enough holding up banners etc, no leadership = no coordinated effort = no impact.
We really need one of the fans groups to take up the mantle and united the fans, I just cannot see it happening.
Years ago, when I was younger the fans would never have put up with this, and defiantly not for this long.

Comment #65It is just downright miserable to be a newcastle supporter. I can never divorce the club, even being an adopted Geordie from the states I cannot let her go I feel such a strong connection to the club, the supporters, the community, and the pain. The highs you get when things are on the up at newcastle are through the roof and the lows are unbareable to me. I’m not some yank bandwagon bin dipper, or hipster man ure supporter, the feelings I have for this football club are only rivaled to that of my home state college(American ) football team, the Arkansas razorbacks. We have no professional teams in our state in any sport so the razorbacks are all we have and much like the toon we have been given more pain then pleasure and still support are team better then any other fans in America. What I’m trying to say is I can’t leave newcastle I’ve already steered my 5 year old son aboard this sinking ship, we have got to get Ashley out and take our club back!!!!

Comment #67Best of luck Carver. You were never going to be a popular choice, I for one am on your side, as you’re coaching my team and you will need the fans.
Now, to lift the team for our most important game of the season. They need the win more than us, so they will be up for it but also- really nervous. Take advantage of that. Come out strong, press all over from the start.
Ok, man, 3 wins. Don’t leave it late.

I don’t disagree with that, under this present regime I think he is the best we could get. I still feel we need a new direction, and would be best served by a continental coach.
But as things stand I’m not even sure McClaren would want to come here.

Comment #72Cyprus lol!!! Firebug lol!!! Humor at the end of the day is all we have. Just like in war in the worst of times when facing death the best remody was a joke of the dark variety involving IEDs turning us into spaghetti and the likes… Surely the country of England has even had enough of the fat mans greed. I see other clubs supporters no longer laughing at us but feeling sorry for us (not sure which is worse) but surely England is a better footballing country with a strong Newcastle United then this mockery. And surely people of England are seeing the possibility of a trend for greedy bloodsuckers to come in and do the same at other clubs. Surely somebody will step in and stop this right? Maybe I’m dreaming again but it seems to me if I was English and supported a different club I would be weery of what’s happening to a great club like Newcastle, with the tv money coming in greed is bound to draw more mike Ashley’s of the world into the game to get there share at the cost of another club. At the end of the day you would think that this sets a dangerous precident with the ever increasing money flow into the league and the FA AND POWERS THAT BE in the UK would wanna stop this cancer before it spreads and weakens the league via more clubs. But hey, what do I know, surely shite about politics and the likes on that side of the ocean…. Just the thoughts of an average American can who loves NUFC

I think it would be a gamble irrespective of whether it was a Brit or foreigner. After all Sir Bobby who had a fantastic CV never won anything with us.
Would it be less of a gamble with McClaren who has coached and won honours in the UK and Europe ? Probably. I think the club are risk averse.
I think its a question of ‘the devil you know’ or ‘the grass is always greener’.
Would McClaren come to us ? Absolutely. In British football there is only one place to be and that’s the Premier League.

Maybe mate, but as head coach there are a lot of restrictions being imposed, and we don’t pay top dollar. I agree the premiership is a big pull, but that’s the only thing we have going for us at the moment, and there are no guarantees we will be in it next season, although I doubt we will go down.
There is a lot to put of potential suitors, and only the fact we are in the prem to attract them imo.

Comment #77Nigerian youngster Dele Alli will complete a £4million move to Newcastle United before being loaned back to MK Dons until end of the season.
The England youth international has attracted interest from Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool.
But now the England U19 star will be loaned back to League One club until July.
Sportsmail understands ‘The Magpies’ will complete the signing of the 18-year-old midfielder this week for a fee of £4million, rising to £5m with add-ons.
The highly-rated England U19 international broke into the senior side two seasons ago and has scored 18 times from 71 appearances.
MK Dons boss Karl Robinson said: “He can be as good as he wants to be, he has got everything. He is special.”

Comment #78A week ago there were reports that rising Newcastle star Callum Roberts was to sign a long-term contract at United.
Today it has been confirmed that Newcastle have agreed a deal with the young player, the Chronicle reporting that a four year contract has been agreed which would take the agreement up to 2019.
Not turning 18 until April, the exciting winger has made his mark with a willingness and ability to go past opposition players and is definitely one who looks as if he could make it.

Comment #79I have to say, I have no problems with SM becoming our next manager.
I think transfer is a million miles away with his comment of , he has had bad spells at clubs, what he needs to take into considerations is , these clubs where he has not done well, he has been let go within 6 months, hardly time to really call the team your own, and the clubs that he has stayed at have done pretty well,
I thought he did fantastic at boro and won a cup
England, really the worst anyone has on him with this job, was his brolly stunt, lets face it the FA ruin any manager that takes the job.
FC Twent, won a title , against Ajax, Fey PSV and even AZ ALK, I would say that’s pretty good
was he ever going to be accepted at Forrest? his connection with Derby C , I don’t think so.
what I think is going to happen though is Derby will be promoted , so why would he take our job?
RDB, looks like he will be out in the summer, I think he has more chance of joining than SM.
and then again, Charver has the hot seat and is the cheapest of the lot, this stupid word ( stability) is what will Charver has in his favour , all he has to do is win 4 games out of 16, which I think should be easy with the playes we have

People should know better by now how the club is run.
