Chelsea’s two major targets for this January transfer window are Juan Cuadrado of Fiorentina and Douglas Costa of Shakhtar Donetsk, and it looks like the Blues are fairly confident they can get one of those players over the line before next Monday night, when the transfer window slams shut.
Moussa Sissoko in action against Chelsea this season
In case they don’t get one of those signed this month, Goal are reporting today that Chelsea are considering Newcastle midfielder Moussa Sissoko as an alternative.
Moussa has made it (abundantly) clear he wants to leave Newcastle for a bigger club sometime in the future – and maybe even this month we suppose.
Newcastle are always prone to do a deal for any player at any time if the money is right, and if Chelsea are unsuccessful in signing Juan Cuadrado or Douglas Costa, Chelsea could make an offer for Sissoko even on the last day of the transfer window next Monday.
Obviously we hope that doesn’t happen, because Newcastle are not exactly safe from relegation this season.
However if a bid in excess of £20M comes in then Newcastle would sell, and we’d be short of Sissoko for the rest of the season.
That’s simply the way Newcastle operate, as Lee Charnley confirmed last Tuesday night in his interview in the Chronicle – the new coach has to accept that Newcastle can sell a player:
“It’s also someone that for example, if we were to get an offer for a player that is at a value that we want to take, isn’t nervous about getting a replacement. There has to be a trust. “
“We want to make things better and improve things but sometimes our timelines might not meet.”
What Lee doesn’t say there specifically, is when Andy Carroll, Demba Ba and Papiss Cisse were sold in previous January transfer windows they weren’t replaced – a small omission there.
But maybe that’s what he’s referring to about the timelines not meeting?
What a way to run a football club. 🙁
One thing that may have Newcastle thinking twice about selling Moussa this month, if a bid is at a value that Newcastle want to take, is that it wouldn’t look good if we did sell Moussa this month.
Any decent coach thinking about the Newcastle head coach position would have second thoughts if that happened, so at least that’s in our favor.
That’s right isn’t it?

Uncertainty? I don’t think there is much. I think it is pretty certain that JC will be in charge for the foreseeable future. All that is missing is official conformation.
Anyway, the club could well receive a significant boost this week. Both Tiote and Cisse could well be heading back to Tyneside before the end of the week results depending.
Cisse and Senegal must beat Algeria to guarantee qualification. But should they slip up and lose then Ghana beating South Africa will see Cisse heading back to Tyneside on Wednesday. A very welcome boost for us given the lack of firepower.
In the Ivory Coast group, almost anything could happen. All results have been draws so far, so anyone could go through. Ivory Coast face Cameroon though, which will make it more difficult for them. Tiote would then be heading back on Thursday probably.
Both would be welcome back into the fold, with Cisse having a good chance of at least being available for the bench on Saturday.
Another way of looking at it is that both will be back with just under a week of the window open and the club would find it easier to move them on if a bid comes in…..

Imagine the benefit SD would derive from relegation followed by a concerted effort at promotion.

Comment #4On Sissoko, if the club were to get £20million for him and immediately (i.e.. before this window closes) reinvest the income in a goalscoring wide man and a commanding centre half then it would be good business. We have several players who can play either central midfield or in the no.10 position, and if we were to start playing more football, rather than relying on a water carrier then Sissoko won’t be too big a miss.
Of course, given that we are unlikely to reinvest any of the money, hopefully he will stay put, at least until the summer.

Comment #5Sissoko for me gets a bit found out if he signs for Chelsea. Great athlete, physical prowess and power is impressive but his basic technical skills are poor. Not a great passer, suspect touch at times and not the most visionary! Don’t get me wrong, i want him to stay at nufc and his assets are huge but at chelsea he would go from being a top player at newcastle to someone who plays 20 mins a game. No way does he displace oscar, matic or fabregas. He should use remy as a guide who was our jewel and never plays despite chelsea only having an injury prone costa and a near 37 year old drog.
If they want to swap with Remy and Ramires that would be nice

Comment #6Don’t get people blaming Carr by the way. Hes a scout…. We have no clue who hes recommended to the board that theyve passed on… The players hes brought in all had high technical skills just we had a manager that had other priorities and played a style that didn’t utilise them.
Anyone quoting Marveaux should look at him for Rennes pre toon. Was rated at 12m before injuries and was quite a player.

Comment #9Sometimes our timelines might not meet?
That bit there sums it up doesn’t it. Might not meet.
They never fcuking meet never mind sometimes. We get left woefully short time and time again under the pretence of “we can’t compete” “we just couldn’t get him over the line” when in reality no effort whatsoever was made to replace, well not until 6-12 months later when a contracts running out or the player’s getting over a few seasons of injuries or better still they find someone with a cheap clause.
No need to replace right away we’ll just muddle along until a bargain appears.
That’s the nufc blueprint for transfers. Shoddy.

Comment #10Stuart…You’re not wrong, of course those teams can be beaten, but without being too picky, I’d say the Chelsea and Soton results were somewhat expected?!?
This isn’t me saying Carver is right or should evem be given the chance. Not for a minute. Just that surely at some point common sense needs to be applied. If he can’t get anything against Hull, the board should be looking at the situation and be worried as hell.
Who knows whether they will though.
I think Jail’s right. They’ve just been waiting for Carver to get a win before announcing it.
I also like Jespers thought. What if Carver says no? 🙂 I imagine that’s unlikely mind.

You are quite right the only ‘uncertainty’ is the announcement of Carver as caretaker till the Head Coach is appointed. Charnley said as much in his interview.
If Sissoko wants to go to Chelsea more fool him. Perhaps a short telephone call to Remy and Ba should make his mind up as to whether he will get many games.

Comment #13Our club is being run by a power mad office boy, a 70 yr old scout and an assistant coach. (The three stooges). What other club runs a club with only two in charge, I’m not including carver as he does what he is told. What happened to the board of directors an experienced DOF or is this position held by a tea lady.
This club is a shambles and can only see one direction which is relegation. Where’s the players motivation coming from or is that Wendy’s job.

Believe me, using ‘git’ shows some restraint!
Ashley’s put bugger all into taking the Club forward and I believe that’s him reacting to the way fans have attacked him over the years. He’ll not forgive neither will he attempt to understand why he’s so despised on Tyneside.
He’s wealthy and spiteful enough to toy with the fortunes of Newcastle United and it’s because of that I believe he’s quite relaxed at the prospect of relegation.
What a sad state of affairs and the sooner he takes his evil, manipulating selfish ways out of Newcastle United, the better for all concerned.

NUST got off to a bad start by allowing some of it’s representatives to be belligerent and aggressive – hence it was kicked off the Fan Forum.
I’d like to think it’s managed to manage the confrontational members of its membership and could adopt a more constructive and strategic approach to achieving its aims.

All Ashley’s actions show that relegation is his biggest fear.
Thats why we don’t want cup runs and Europe.
That’s why he buys in January if we are near the bottom.
He needs the EPL for all his advertising.
The Championship doesn’t get the coverage.
The whole lack of ambition in the club is his fear of spending and over-stretching our weak squad leading to relegation.

Comment #26ibiza —– i know what you say, and given another crack at it, chelsea would win 6-0 or 99/100 the motto ? go into every game to win it regardless who your playing.
The board worry ?? by that time it will be too late. Gambling , like ashley does with everything, is not the perfect method when deciding who is going to save your company from a financial catastrophe, this man has got to be right for the job or kiss bye bye to a healthy wedge. appointing someone coz hes cheap , could be one gamble too many for ye old fat one,

Whose side am I on? In principle, NUST’s but my view was taken from the somewhat aggressive and confrontational views expressed on this very blog by one one of its board members.
They were not conducive to achieving dialogue and understanding. Publishing the forum minutes prematurely did not help – if that is there were agreed protocols in place.
The Trust really should try to build bridges with Ashley and his cronies and get itself back into the Forum. Doing so would give the Forum credibility and the Trust, influence.
Like you and many others, I’d like to see Ashley out of it but it’s clear that he will not act to cooperate but wants to plough his own furrow more often than not to the detriment of Newcastle United.
Think of the scene in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid – ask us to stay and we’ll leave. They were asked to stay and they left!
In summary Jail, dialogue and a spirit of cooperation adopted in negotiations, playing the opposition into a situation where they’ve got no option than to go with the flow or lose credibility by not doing do.
An alternative way perhaps, but worth a try?
