John Carver had his first interview since becoming caretaker manager through the end of the season, and he says Newcastle season will not peter away, something he will have some trouble with convincing Newcastle fans – until we start winning some games soon.
John Carver – our season will not peter away – honest
This is what John has said today on the Newcastle web-site:
“I’m delighted to have got the job until the end of the season,” “Everyone knows I love this Club and my goals are simple – to finish as high as we can in the Premier League and get as many points as we can.”
“Everybody on the outside is talking about our season petering away, but I am not going to allow that to happen.” “Those who are saying that don’t know me, don’t know the people around me and don’t know this group of players.”
“We’re much more professional than that.” “We can’t afford to let the season drift away and I won’t allow it to happen. I’m too demanding and I won’t allow anyone to slacken off between now and the end of May.”
“I love being on the training pitch and the role of the head coach is to be hands-on out here,” “When you are a manager you have to manage the football club, but the role has changed and it gives me maximum time on the training ground, coaching the players.”
“What I have done is given Steve Stone and Dave Watson more responsibility because they are very good at what they do, and it is important that you delegate to those who are talented.”
“But when it comes to the meat of the session, it is my responsibility to prepare the team for the final 16 games.” “The players have been really positive and have responded.”“Even though we haven’t won a game yet, I think we’ve played some nice stuff in spells (but nice stuff doesn’t equal points). Ultimately though, it is about scoring goals and winning games so that needs to change.”
“We’ve done plenty of work on that on the training pitch and hopefully that little bit of luck we need will fall our way this weekend.”
Four games with one draw and three defeats is not a good return since Alan Pardew bolted from the club after the Everton game.
And in the final 16 games of the season we play 8 games against teams who are (at least now) currently below us in the league table – so those are the games we really need to win.
And we are getting a number of our injured players coming back soon – as we reported earlier this morning, so that should help us get some points on the board.
We need to win on Saturday at Hull City who are 3rd bottom and struggling, and another defeat could start some alarm bells going off at Newcastle – since we are not safe from being dragged into a relegation fight.
We hope that doesn’t happen, but that’s the mood of the Newcastle fans right now – who simply don’t trust the powers that be at the club.

That article is very interesting and balanced. The author appears hesitant about a wholesale ejection of Ashley and many of club’s policies. He certainly doesn’t want a return to the previous regime.
He also doubts whether any action against SD would be effective. This is realistic as the overwhelming majority of Toon supporters, who would conduct a boycot, are in the North East whereas the SD coverage in the North East is relatively small compared to national and international coverage.

Comment #7Hamstrings can be upto 12 week injuries. I have to say the hype around young Aarons is somewhat bewildering, don’t get me wrong I like what I’ve seen but all I keep reading is can’t wait for obertan and Aarons to return etc.
Aarons has looked good but the way some go on you’d think he’s Messi and will change games for us instantly, he’s a kid who will have hit and miss games as he develops, don’t expect to much.
Obertan is just shite, he’s wastes so many good positions and because he’s quick and shite he’s forgiven and judged upon the shite scale rather than the normal barometer we’d compare players on

Comment #8How about a National Zero Hours Strike?
Calling for the Living Wage to be the compulsory rate for employees on zero hour contracts, in exchange for the lack of long term economic security.
That would get at SD.

Comment #9Slank – certainly allows Mr Tubbs a lot more time to continue his plotting and further tighten the noose around Rangers.
I think it’s just a deliberate delaying tactic -to suit him finacially.
Ya Jockeys will need to keep up to speed and be in top form to challenge Mr Tubbs and his “legal team”.
For “legal team” read “shysters”.

What I find quite amazed and puzzling is how small the amounts of money involved are (compared to the amounts sloshing around in England and other footballing nations).
You would think that the second largest club in Scotland with a huge fan base worldwide couldn’t have organised a whip round amongst its fans to save the club.

Comment #12Jesper – that link you posted on the last topic was a very good article. It is what I have said repeatedly on here that a boycott or not renewing your season ticket will have very little effect. Think on that those of you who constantly blame the ST holders. The only way to get at Ashley is to damage the SD brand with protests outside his shops etc.

what do you think of our entire squad?
Do you like alot of fans put all of our poor performances down to just P45 and now Carver or have you ( like me) know P45 didn’t help but ultimately we’re simply not good enough in defence and lack a quality goal scorer, any manager who took us over would lnherit the same weakness.
So its down to the fat controller.

Comment #19Though I believe a boycott of matches may not hurt the club too much in terms of finance it will raise the profile of what we are trying to achieve. Pardew going will definitely be a blessing not only because he was useless but it will get fans to focus on the greater evil. I have always maintained though if you want to get to Ashley SD is the way to do it. Someone said it would be a localised effort but I live in Bournemouth and have 6 friends down here all of which are Newcastle fans who I am sure would get behind any sort of protest at a SD store.

aarons burst on the scene and made an impression virtually every time he played. that’s what sets him apart.
Campbell, Armstrong, Vuksic have all collectively done next to nothing really, but aarons and perez have taken their chance and obviously have some quality about them and with aarons he can actually play a decent final ball.

my take on our squad
its a top 8 squad, for me with the right manager I think its top 5,
yes I think P45 got it all wrong , he was on a different plannet when it comes to the type of player we have, I think when you look at our squad, Allan Carr has set about acquiring attack minded players, P45 tended to play them out of position in more defensive rolls , this not exploiting there natural talents and making them look a poorer player in the same process,
playing a more defensive game even makes our defence look crap, now don’t get me wrong, I expect games where we will be under the cosh a bit, but no matter who we played , all we did was try and contain and sneak a goal,
Jonas used to have the fans on there feet, most of our attacks went through him on the left side when CH was here, P45 got him and turned him into a DMLC, he has done the same to Goofy. HBA followed his own natural game and was punished for it, as was Marv, now im not saying these players should forget about defending , far from it, im thinking they should be thinking about how to open the other team up more than defend defend defend ,

Comment #25martoon…I thought the article was very balance to!
…like the author says we need to find a way to hurt SD if we want to hurt Mr. Tubbs. He talks about staying away from games won’t help, but at the same time he admits that we cannot hurt SD just by targeting it in the North East.
I disagree with him about how to get the media’s attention – he talks about filling up SJP and bring banners as a solution to get the media’s attention, where I do think an empty SJP will get it faster.
A legal demonstration outside the gates will help it along.
Regardless we need to find a common ground first and then we can decide whether to go one way or another.
That was what I was trying to say before 🙂

Comment #28Catchy we still have the 3 same CH from when we were in thechampionship. We never fail to concede less than 50 goals a season. We have an OK midfield and a poor defence with little or no cover for strikers. How that equates to a top 5 squad is beyond me.

You and others allude to our owner’s behavior being comparable with communism.
That is grossly unfair to those who believe in the philosophy of Marx and Engels who did not envisage such despicable behaviour.
Compare Ashley’s tyrannical approach to his businesses which of course include NUFC with the likes of North Korea by all means and you will see a very close resemblance to fascism.
So please try not to offend those who believe in the morally sound concept of socialist principles by associating them with Ashley and his despotic behaviour towards his customers and employees.
Ashley is the exemplification, the personification of the unbridled greed that is encouraged by our current, previous and doubtless future British governments.

yes we do, but playing higher up the pitch will actually help them, right now all we do is pass it sideways and backwards and get caught out,
our Mf and FW are more than a match for just about every team out side the top 5 at home and outside the top 8 away, that’s not saying we should win because of that, but IMO we should be going for the win for 90mins against them,
an attaking team will more often then not concede less goals,
for some strange reason everyone said KKs team had a poor defence, when in reality he finished 2nd to man u and we conceded only 2 goals more than them in 95/96 . in 96/97 we finshed 2nd again and conceded 4 less than man u,
for me football is about scoring goals, if you set out to not get beat, you will never win games, that was p45s biggest problem

I agree with you about p45 but for us to move up the league you need to score to win games, we have no AC, Remy or Ba type player in our squad, we’re relying on a poacher and a kid this season.
And we all know our poor defence will leak goals. No manager can make someone into something there not, how can you change Williamson for example?

A large monkey wrench being tightened on his b****s comes to mind.
That might be the sort of conversation that could make him change his approach to his ownership of NUFC and his abject contempt for its fans.
