Newcastle were linked with 25 year-old Bosnia and Herzegovina international Anel Hadzic quite a bit last summer, and he plays in defensive midfield for SK Sturm Graz in the Austrian Bundesliga, and the 6’1″ player can also play at center-back.
Anal Hadzic – free agent in the summer
Hadzic wants a move to England to play in the Premier League, and there was news about three weeks ago that West Ham had been offered the player.
The Times is reporting that West Ham and Newcastle United are the two clubs who are interested in signing the player for €5M – which is around £3.7M.
Newcastle may be interested in the player because his contract runs out in the summer, although the club have a one year option on that, but he could be available as a free agent in the summer, and that’s always attractive to a Mike Ashley owned Newcastle – because they are cheap – the free agents that is. 😀
We may be interested in the player, but we doubt Newcastle would bring him in this month, and maybe the defensive midfielder is a target if Cheick Tiote is sold in the summer, which may even be likely with young Mehdi Abeid playing well when he’s in the Newcastle first team, and the 22 year-old can still improve a lot.
Hadzic is a defensive midfielder and if we were to sell Cheick Tiote in January, this player could be a potential replacement – but with time running out and Cheick’s Ivory Coast now in the quarter finals of the African Cup of Nations after beating Cameroon 1-0 tonight – that looks very doubtful.
Cheick was left out of the team tonight after picking up two yellow cards in his first two games – sound familiar?
Hadzic played for the Austria U21 side twice, but then opted to play for Bosnia and Herzegovina at full International level, and he was in the 23 man squad at the World Cup in Brazil and currently has six full caps for his country, which is part of the old Yugoslavia.
Last season he played 36 games for SK Sturm Graz in all competitions and scored 4 goals and had 2 assists and he’s made 17 appearances with 5 assists this season.
He’s been at SK Sturm Graz since the summer of 2013, and previously he was at SV Reid, another Austrian club where he played 190 games with 25 goals and 12 assists, and joined them back in 2007, when he was just 17.
