Maybe it’s because he’s always asked about it, but yesterday John Carver reiterated what his job is at Newcastle, and it’s nothing to do with players coming into the club or leaving the club on transfers
John Carver – not interested in transfers
And believe us, that is not a message that’s directed to the fans, but meant for Lee Charnley and Mike Ashley that he’s comfortable in the position identified by them as the new Newcastle head coach position.
And we suppose we can understand why a born and bred Newcastle man wants the job at St. James’ Park.
And the 50 year-old even worked at Toronto FC for 15 months from February 2008 in a similar role and he loved it.
There has been news that both Moussa Sissoko and Papiss Cisse could move this month, although that now appears unlikely because of the transfer window closing on Monday – we hope it is.
This is how John explained his role yesterday and could he get the team finishing high up the league table:
“My role is a head coach. I’m not interested in who is coming in or who is going out.” ” I have to say I have done a similar job once before in America, and my role was exactly the same. So I am working under these conditions and I understand it.”
“My role is to get the team right, pick the team and get results, not get involved in anything outside of that.” “There are people in positions to deal with that, so if you have got anything to come at me on that, there is nothing for me to give you.”
“I am concentrating on the team and that’s it.” “I am quite excited now, and I know that is a bit of a pressurized question on me. But I believe I can.”
“I believe with the players coming back into the squad now, because other than Steven Taylor who is out for the long term, we have almost got everyone close within two or three weeks, give or take not losing anybody; with a fully fit squad. Why not.”
And John did volunteer that he has informed the Board about which positions need strengthening, and since we have been short of a striker and a center-back all season – we assume those are two positions John has mentioned to Lee Charnley.
It’s not rocket science.
The ball is now in John Carver’s court to get us as high up the league table as possible before the end of the season, and if we can reach say the top eight – the job may even be given to him permanently in the summer.
It would be an easy appointment for the club, and one they can defend if Carver does well tin the final 16 league games.
A Geordie manager for the first time since Alan Shearer held the position for just 8 games in 2009 on a short term contract, and Sir Bobby Robson was permanent manager from 1999-2004.

Comment #2I wonder if part of Penfolds plan for the new manager is for him to be able to turn left backs and midfielders into strikers CB or wingers

Comment #3Think Santon might get a start! Hes had a few reserve games now! Carver seems to be more in tune with what the fans are saying. Seen this by dropping Williamson for dummett when it was possible, wanting to build a team around Cabella , hes even acknowledged Ferrrerya exists…etc his problem will come from Niaivity. Seen this against Southampton and Chelsea. Hes also not got the strongest squad as we have no centrebacks or centre forwards.
Think hes in a clearer position than Pardew was as think the board have told him concisely what the job is and what he can and can’t do. Not sure they did that with pardew and that left him hung out to dry and frustrated.
Personally ive got a feeling Carvers reign will be similar to Ardiles… Good attacking football outplaying teams but losing games more than winning

Comment #4the role of head coach is to get as many points on board as possible . Carver saying he is not bothered who comes in or out will have a different attitude when the guns are out for him , he will get the same treatment as pardew – he has the same job. It sounds like he is avoiding any responsibiliy when it comes to winning by saying ‘ he is only coaching the players he has got . This is a dream scenario for ashley, a head coach who wont say boo to a goose and who will take the flack from the fans , if he likes it or not . i can see it ending in tears come may . I bet in august we wiould finish bottom 3 , i;m still on to win it .

It just feels like we are ticking over waiting for the youth to come through, and Ashley’s master plan to swing into action.
Simply put, he wants the youth academy and development squad to produce the players for the first team so he doesn’t have to spend any money.
The theory is good, if we were producing PL class players, the reality is we are not, and most of what we need are not ready yet, some may never be.

Comment #8Pick me Mike! Pick me! I don’t care who you buy and sell, just pick me!
Jeez…put it away John mate.
I’m really trying to get behind Carver, but I find the whole situation a bit ridiculous. I do hope he does well, but I am frustrated that the club are yet again gambling and hoping that we’ve done well enough in the first half of a season to allow us to experiement with the second half.

Spot on marra, I was having this same argument last night, All of Carve-up’s comments were just short of begging for the job full time.

Comment #12Jay – we outplayed Chelsea completely in the first half, before Collo and Krul’s epic fails for the first goal. Fact is no decent manager/coach is going to come here. If not JC then someone else will have to accept things as they are and that is as simple as it gets. FDB, Garde etc, hahahaha! Take a look at the table right now and it’s hard to actually see who we could be better than, other than West Ham and Swansea. Ashley is not going to spend what is required to compete with the big boys and has said so. Trouble is, football is a competitive sport and the owner has no competitive ambition for us whatsoever. Unless he changes that mentality and we can replicate Southampton (sold big, but got good replacements and a class coach) from bottom to top, this nightmare is only going to continue until the big guy leaves.

Comment #13Not sounding like a true Newcastle Fan Carver, not interested in “who comes in or who goes out” only interested in coaching. Wrong answer that could come back and bite you.

Comment #14Mr Carver, seriously, you are not bothered who comes in and out of the club? wow i find that breathtakingly weird, for god sake lad you have got to be able to put some input in to the situation, a whipping boy and a Thunderbird job without doubt.
Carver, what would the great Sir Bobby have said!
You have sold your soul bonny lad!
