The Mail is reporting that Arsenal have turned down the chance to sign Newcastle midfielder Cheick Tiote in Jnauary.
Cheick Tiote – in Ivory Coast colors
There was news in the summer that Arsenal were interested in signing Cheick, who is currently on International duty for the Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations.
The Mail says that Cheick Tiote has been offered to the Gunners and Newcastle want the deal completed before Monday’s night’s deadline, when the January transfer window slams shut.
It’s likely that Newcastle will sell Cheick in the summer, since he has not been in good form for Newcastle this season, although Arsene Wenger is looking for a strong midfield player who will give the Arsenal midfield some bite – which it doesn’t have at the moment.
However, Francis Coquelin was recalled from his loan spell at Charlton Athletic in early December, and the 23 year-old French U21 International has played extremely well for Arsenal in defensive midfield over the last several weeks.
And maybe that is one reason Wenger seems not to be interested in Tiote.
The fee being quoted for Tiote is around £12M – and we paid £3.5M for him in the summer of 2010 when we signed the 48 times capped Ivory Coast International from FC Twente, after he had been scouted for a couple of years by Newcastle Chief Scout Graham Carr.
We don’t know if it’s true that Newcastle have really offered Cheick to Arsenal – we doubt it – but it wouldn’t surprise us too much if he moves on in the summer.
Cheick’s contract at Newcastle runs out in June of 2017.
