John Carver has named his team for the vital game at Hull City today, and Vurnon Anita, Remy Cabella and Sammy Ameobi all start and there are two changes from the side that lost at home to the Saints – with Sammy Ameobi and centre-back Mike Williamson coming into the side in place of Yoan Gouffran, who drops to the subs bench, and the injured Paul Dummett.
Newcastle are playing in a 4-3-3 formation today.
Hull (4-3-1-2): Allan McGregor; Ahmed Elmohamady, Michael Dawson, Curtis Davies (c), Andrew Robertson; David Meyler, Tom Huddlestone, Jake Livermore; Gaston Ramirez; Abel Hernandez, Nikica Jelavic
Substitutes: Steve Harper, Alex Bruce, Paul McShane, Stephen Quinn, Robbie Brady, Tom Ince, Sone Aluko
Newcastle: (4-3-3): Tim Krul; Daryl Janmaat, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Massadio Haidara; Moussa Sissoko, Vurnon Anita, Jack Colback; Remy Cabella, Ayoze Perez, Sammy Ameobi
Substitutes: Jak Alnwick, Davide Santon, Mehdi Abeid, Gabriel Obertan, Yoan Gouffran, Emmanuel Riviere, Papiss Cisse
Referee: Phil Dowd (Staffordshire)
We expected Mehdi Abeid to get the nod over Vurnon Anita but John is staying with the Dutchman, and Haidara is preferred to Santon at left back with Paul Dummett being out injured.
Mike Williamson as expected comes in at center-back, and we are just hoping that Colo and Willo can have good games today for the Magpies.
And it’s good to see Gabby Obertan back on the bench and goalkeeper Jak Alnwick has returned and makes the subs bench in place of 17 year-old Freddie Woodman.
We must start picking up some points today – and Hull City manager Steve Bruce has warned that Newcastle could be “fragile” today after losing seven of our last nine games, and the Geordie also says we could be dragged into a relegation fight.
Hull will start all out today to try to get an early goal.
This is what caretaker manager John Carver has said about the game today:
“Why can’t we go on a run? Why can’t we go and win games?” “I’ve seen enough in the last three league games (we’ve lost all three of them) to suggest we can go on a run.”
“We’ve got a group of three games now which are very, very important. The most important thing is getting that first one and it has to come soon.” “I want the same performance as last season at Hull, because it was definitely one of our best performances away from home.”
“That was really encouraging, so a similar performance and a similar result would put a smile back on my face again.” “They are at home and the pressure is going to be on them,” “The one thing I do know is that they are getting one or two players back, and so it is very difficult to predict what team and what system they will play.”
“But we will play on their home record, yes. We know what it’s like when you’re under pressure at home and not winning games – you can turn the crowd.” “It can be dangerous when you are under pressure – we saw that at the start of the season. But we’ve got to be careful of not slipping up.”
This is how Newcastle fans think the game will go today.
