It was a game today when Newcastle definitely needed all 3 points – and we got them. In the second half the lads even made it look fairly easy, and 3-0 was our biggest win of the season – so far – and it was the second successive time we have won the game by three goals at Hull City’s KC Stadium.
Remy Cabella – terrific goal from Cabella today
From our Man of the Match poll, here are the top five Newcastle players today.
- Remy Cabella – 49% – has been given starts since John Carver took over coaching the side, and we are finally starting to see the man we signed from Montpellier – it always takes a while to settle down in English football. It was a great goal from Cabella just before the break – his very first for Newcastle – and he was barged off the ball got up (he’s been told to do that by the coaches) and he won the ball back moved to his left a little, but at lightening speed, and then rifled the ball into the back of the net with his left foot – a great goal from Remy.
That will now give him the confidence to hopefully keep scoring goals for us – and the Newcastle fans have remained right behind the 24 year-old. - Massadio Haidara – 21% – the young Frenchman had another very good game for Newcastle today, and he was good both defensively and on the attack, and put some very good crosses in, One of them saw Ayoze Perez get his head to the ball, but it went straight at the goalkeeper. This lad is starting to look like a good player for Newcastle, since he was signed two years ago – and he’s only just turned 22. He will keep his place next week against Stoke City on this performance.
- Vurnon Anita – 13% – as we mentioned in our article when the team was announced today, we expected Mehdi Abeid to be in the starting line-up in defensive midfield, because Vurnon has not been in good form much this season. Well, the 25 year-old Dutchman worked his socks off today for the side – and even managed to head the ball off the line after a wild Fab Coloccini attempted clearance.
Vurnon worked well in central midfield with Jack Colback. It’s hard to see why he wouldn’t keep his starting position ar home to Stoke next Sunday. - Ayoze Perez – 6% – it looked like Ayoze had a fairly quiet game today – but he still went close two or three times, and with a little bit of luck could have scored when it didn’t look like he even had a chance. This youngster continues to improve, and with Papiss Cisse coming back and playing the last eight minutes today, it wouldn’t surprise us too much if John Carver starts to play a 4-4-2 formation at home with Perez and Cisse up front.
- Sammy Ameobi – 3% – if somebody like Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi had scored the goal that Sammy scored after 50 minutes today, it would have been shown around the world – it was a magnificent strike. I swear I was getting sea-sick watching the ball go in as it moved around in the air – up and down. I was a goalkeeper when I was young – many moons ago – and the ball never moved around like that. Sammy had a decent game today but we all know he has the class and skills galore, and now he needs to get that consistency into his game, and if he can do that, he should earn a new deal at his home town club.
With so many players returning from injury, the subs bench looked strong today – and we should soon have Siem de Jong back and Rolando Aarons fit again, and they will both be looking for a starting position on the team.
Let’s hope we can make it two wins in a row against Stoke a week tomorrow.

Comment #2Unfortunately. Although I am rooting for Cabella, and he is beginning to look a creative force, the vote reflects how easily swayed the majority are by the suggestion of a couple of rubbish tv pundits. Haidara all day for me, Santon will have a tough time getting back into the lb position, and Dummett need not apply.

Agreed mate Haidara was very good and the best player on the pitch, I’d have put Anita 2nd though!! He got a lot of stick during the game but he was the only one sitting back and defending for us, not sure what was up with Sissoko and Colback.
Haidara should hopefully put some good performances in from here on, I’m still concerned at his first touch and his positional sense at time though. Let’s see how he fares against better opposition.

Comment #7All in all, a good performance from us, got the job done and looked comfortable at the end. With DeJong, Aarons goming back into the team, Carver has the ability to improve the 11 on the pitch plus a strong bench.
Really dont want him as our “Long-term” head honcho, but wish him well for the rest of the season.

Comment #8Good day for john ‘handyman’ carver really. Bagged his first win, got some of the low morale players to drive a 3-0 win, turning over a strong cheating mackems contingent, and fitting in a pesky ridge tile job in Bridlington. No job too small.

Comment #101) Cabella – despite the goal, he did work hard doing his individual skills and there are some time he should PASS THE BALL early.
2) Haidara – definitely MOTM. dont rate dummet there and with santon back competition is good for the team
3) Anita – still a sh*t player. the reason he look GOOD is because hull city midfield is playing awful
4) Ayoze – work hard every game. 100 times better than our previous lazy striker – Shola Ameobi
5) Sammy – need consistency but good goal

Comment #11Our Toon – the Bruce game plan was to cut out any thoughts of sissoko getting his trademark runs in. Not worried about that, because it meant that while they wasted energy on a ‘ key’ area of the park we exploited it with unlikely players getting through on goal. Colback though is starting to be exposed as a grafting cog in the team with no particular creative input. I’d rather start abeid.

Comment #13I knew Cabella would come good, kudos to Carver for giving him the game time to build his confidence. Of course now he will begin to make a name for himself and that will attract some unwanted attention from other clubs and we’ll probably see him shifted on in 12months or so for a huge fee. Such a shame.

Comment #14It’s a drop in the ocean now. Two years on, £35 million won’t even get you a top quality striker and you have to go to 50, 60, 70, 100 million bracket. What did Barca play for Suarez? £80m? At the time, people think that was over-priced, but when you are giving them a five or six-year contract and, if two or three years down the line, they are developing as good as you expect, then everyone talks about it as a bargain – ‘£35m for Andy Carroll, what a bargain and we would pay £60m or £70m for him now’. That is football at the top level – Sam Allardyce

Comment #16I would say the other members of the squad are going to have to bust a gut to beat Perez to player of the season though. Consistently good touch, hard, hard worker, gives up on nothing. And all this from the poorest attacking midfield service in the league.

Comment #22Carver’s going on like a kid on Xmas morning. His temporary appointment’s gone to his head and hr could end up really disappointed if it’s not made permanent.
Somebody ought to be telling him to calm down over it, for his own sake, before he’s brought down to earth with an almighty thump!

Comment #34I got slated earlier this week for saying cabella has started to show flashes of form in short spells and how many people were moaning … And i said give carver a chance before jumping on him its still early but i think everyone settled after a manager was appointed they played with freedom and i saw some nice passing aswell

I said earlier I’m not carried away with the win mate, they gifted us the points today, Cabella was good in flashes but he was awful at times as well. Against better opposition we will get punished with the amount of times Cabella loses the ball. I counted 9 times in the 1st 30mins of the 1st half.
I happy with the win, but as they showed on MOTD, Hull gifted us the goals, they also missed some absolute sitters. I look at it as 9 more points to safety!!

Comment #36Toon and i wasnt pointing you out haha im saying he is starting to look better than he was under pardew already … Ive said it because when i said he looked better against chelsea i got slated by many and im not saying hes brilliant just yet but in the next few games he will have more confidence but against stoke if we play players like cabella and anita we might struggle because of how physical they can be but on the bright side shawcross and huth are unavailable i think

Comment #37Cabella goal – not really a gift, although a mistake led to the half chance.
Same with Ameobi goal.
Gouffran goal was probably covered but for the deflection.
As for Stoke – it’s Walters that is the animal – always remember his charging into Raylor for a header, knowing Raylor was going to be absolutely flattened. For me, that was GBH. Anyone remember that incident?
Our performance was probably the worst under Carver.
First half – dire (both teams).
Second half – a bit better but Hull had all but given up hope.
Cabella can’t tackle as such, but his quick feet nicked the ball quite a few times.
Attacking – he has to be positive and try things, which is often going to lead to losing possession, but he has to try. No marks for just keeping possession and passing backwards.
Anita – not a bad game.
Colback – mostly anonymous.
I want to see Abeid get a decent run.

Comment #38Delighted with the win yesterday. Two cracking goals by cabella and Sammy, esp Sammy’s goal was superb. Most of our players were excellent, krul that I criticized him in the past was outstanding as well. Before the game, the line up is correctly set up by John. That line up is the one I usually like to see.Haidara has cracking game together with krul.Esp Haidara was exceptional. He deserves more games from now on.Krul made some outstanding saves, good to see him back in form.Williamson had good game as well, though haven’t noticed by many.He won most of high balls in the air.Overall, that is a comfortable win, could have scored 4 or 5.Job not finished yet but we get some breathing space.Hwtl!!

Comment #39Cabella played well, sometimes tries to do too much, but all in all a decent performance. Thought Anita got stuck in, was probably the best of the midfielders. Haidara also had a good game and a mention for Perez, he doesn’t half put in a shift, he appears to be getting used to the physicality of the PL

As i posted yesterday I give my MOM jointly to : Anita and Cabella
followed by Williamson who had to have a good game as Coloccini was having a nightmare.
Sammi might of scored a good goal but has the same problem as his brother gives away to many needless free kicks.
Krul had a good game – but has to be more dominant in his six yard box.
Hiadara had one of his best games in a TOON shirt
Colback – steady game
Sissoko fleeted in and out of the game
Perez – never gave up lost causes and nearly scored a couple of occassions
Janmaat – lot better game than against Southampton
All in all not our best performance but a BIG three points
