This Newcastle Star Could Be Surprise Departure Tomorrow

Sky Italia are reporting that Inter-Milan will come in and try to sign their former player Davide Santon of Newcastle United, before the transfer window closes tomorrow night.

Davide Santon – Inter-Milan interested?

Manager Roberto Mancini is keen to bolster his squad and he has already signed Lukas Podolski from Arsenal, Xherdan Shaqiri from Bayern Munich and Marcelo Brozovic from Dinamo Zagreb in this January window.

With Davide Santon having just returned from a long term knee injury, he has not yet made it back into the Newcastle first team, and if Inter do come in for him, and the bid is big enough, it wouldn’t surprise us too much if Newcastle do the deal.

Newcastle have shown in past windows that they are willing sellers in January – but only if the money is big enough.

One thing Newcastle will be thinking of is that Davide’s contract runs out in 18 months time – when he will become a free agent – and we signed him from Inter in August of 2011 on a five year deal for £5.2M from the Italian club.

Inter are currently in 13th position in Serie A after 22 games played, and a full 13 points off third placed Napoli, so although Inter are strengthening their side in January, it’s unlikely they can qualify for a Champions League place by May.

They would need to make up at least 13 points on Napoli in the final 16 games of the season, after they finished in 5th place with 60 points last season and only (for them) qualified for the Europa League playoff position.

Ever since Santon has been at Newcastle for the last three and a half years, there has been interest in him from Italian clubs, including the two Milan clubs and Roma.

Davide could be the surprise departure tomorrow if Inter do come in with a big bid – maybe a minimum of £8M?

However, on a personal note, Davide is very settled at Newcastle with girlfriend Chloe Sanderson, and they have a baby daughter Sienna, who was born on 21st May 2013.

Davide has played 94 times with one goal for Newcastle and currently we have both Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara who can play at left back for Newcastle.

Nice to have him as backup for either full back position but think Janmaat and Haidara should be first choice now.

I don’t like to get involved in all of the discussion on financial stats as I am sure most are aware that stats can be used to support even opposite sides of the arguement depending how used.

However despite informed opinion saying that next TV deal is going to be even higher the bubble has to burst at some stage just like always in a boom and bust economy.

Time was promoted clubs like Watford etc ( before the recent nonsenical Sky payments affected clubs’ judgements) didn’t risk their anticipated new wealth on new expensive players and wages because the gamble involved was too great. Go down anyway (3 have to!) and even with parachute payments you were in a financial nightmare of your own making which make take you down another division.

Cue the stupid money now around, and even all newly promoted clubs and those just missing out on relegation can’t help themselves and some are spending in advance as you get paid on league postion at end. Of course they will assume that even finishing bottom will bring you a nice earner. Trouble is in the Chamionship you have still got those players on exhorbitent wages and some might be wanted by other clubs but not all and not at what you paid for them. How many of those you can’t unload want to be there ? Look at bottom of Championship for recent PLnames.

Of course the irony is that the same stupid money makes it more imperative for those clubs to stay up and on the gravy train eventually becoming one of the nouveau rich in World football as recent figures have shown.

Whether or not you are a gambler that would risk even the financial meltdown of your club if gamble fails Ashley isn’t. He didn’t even pay daft money 2 January’s ago to protect his investment as Carr had done his work and Ashley brought forward some intended purchases from Summer even if he had to pay more than he expected.

If Ashley sustains his model ( I still say if as I am an optimist by nature and he may loosen the strings little if a top coach does come in by Summer – not holding my breath) then whilst we will stay hovering around the twilight zone of 8 – 17 come the crash we will at least be in a better place than most.

On the other hand if he does go (he will have his nose to the wind for the downturn) he will leave a club in profit with a good wages to turnover ratio which in any business is an attractive option and hopefully we can attract an owner who wants more than just a well run club and has a more pleasing financial model to bring fans on board.

I am of a similar age to 9 (and Ed and some others who post) and perhaps that brings us to a different perspective to many on here. We have endured far worse times at this club than we now have and worse managers than even Pardew so generally maintain perspective and play the long game.

I said a few days ago that I want jam now ( given my age!) but bawling about Ashley and inventing new perjorative names for him ain’t doing a single thing to achieve that.

He has to do some serious work to dethrone Haidara IMO .

Although I can see him walking straight back into the starting line up when fully fit .

Santon, I have my reservations but on the whole I think he is an asset to the club. He is a left back, We have 2 other left backs who are just as good. If we can sell at a profit, no problem. If nobody’s offering a profit, don’t sell. (I don’t think anybody will be offering us a profit, FWIW)

Selling for a profit would only be a good idea if we saw the money back into the team not into the fatmans pocket.

    Jeff at 4.

The manager has no impact on who is bought or sold, that much has been made clear this month, makes no difference to INS or OUTS whether we have a boss or not.

Think Haidara gives us better balance on the left than Santon, also Haidara can defend better, remember how long Santon had to have Jonas sat in front of him to protect him.

Unlikely we here this every window and e likes newcastle santon does … Hes happy and even if it were true then considering the 5.2 million we bought him for mashers would want about 12+mill which is expensive for a player that hasnt really been great and has been injured for a while

imo 8mil would be a great deal as we over rate him tbh ! not a great defender and not a great attacker ! but has potential to be good at both.

unfortunatly i’ve not seen him improve at all and he’s the one player i can say has stayed exactly the same as when we signed him so i’d normally say get the money while the moneys good and we have better players now !

however !!!! we will never see the money or a replacement it will go in fatmans back pocket and be covered up in running costs ect no doubt so from a fans point of view it will be weakening the team for no reason what so ever.

    Hi Magscar,
I’ve, obviously. no idea who you are but as we seem to be a pair of old codgers, welcome, mate.
I really don’t mind NUFC fans hating Ashley for his massive early mistakes, but I can’t be having them ignoring the obvious good work he’s done for our club since then. It is easy to see how well he’s playing the SFA and Rangers, and step forward the boys who think NUFC will be in the Champions League earlier then Rangers. He’s come, he will go, and NUFC will be all the better for his ownership.

JD stats suggest otherwise .We concede a goal every 43 mins with Haidara as LB that is way higher than either Santon or Dummet.
Having said that he is young and improving.

Come on tequila lad, stats to compare? How can you compare 2 left backs based on the goals we concede?

The team from when santon started, the 5th place team, was much stronger than we are now so obvs we would concede less then, Colo in team of the season, Tiote in 30m form, Cabaye to keep the ball, Jonas sat in front of him just to defend as well.

Think Dummett is a better defender than haidara but offers 0 in attack, the best balance for now is Haidara for me, both attack and defend.

I find it depressing that as an old codger you will resort with insults after first berating others for the same, and you claim you deal with fact, yet blatantly ignore them when posters like myself respond.

Most of your replies have been laced with sarcasm and derision to the other posters who had chosen to take up debate with you.

I refer to the previous thread where seemingly when faced with real fact you just ignore them and move on.

Old codger? Maybe just a cantankerous old man.

You initially came on here to lecture some about facts and figures when I’ve delved further into the finances for you it appears that you don’t know the full information yet claim to lecture others.

The Wonga deal is around 6m short of the Virgin deal we had signed. I can send you a breakdown of everything if you want mate, maybe you can base an opinion on the actual facts then rather than conjecture!! Much like the owner it seems as if you failed to do your due diligence.

The bottom line for any football fan should be about what winning things and challenging for titles or cups. 20 years from now are you or any other fan going to brag about the finances that your club once had?

A club is measured on success on the pitch players will join us to be in the prem but leave us for EL or CL football. I can’t wait to sit down with some of my mates in years to come and reminisce about the good all days, they’ll talk about trophies there clubs won or a time when they were close to greatness (ie tino asprilla scoring a hat trick against the mighty Barcelona at SJP) and I’ll boast about us breaking even or better still making a profit selling our best players!!

    on the owners;

the difference imo is shepherd thought of the football team fist putting the club into debt to make sure we was up and around the top but not bothered about the finantials.

ashley is the reverse making sure the finantials are correct and right before the team and if that means spending to keep us in the prem which is def needed to balance the books he will do but if it means spending 40mil on players to gain him 1 mil off league positions he wont.

under shep we wouldnt have the young lads coming through we have now as this is what ashley has built as he’s had to to save his own pocket but on the other hand we would have players like rooney who are over paid and bleeding us dry but are pushing us up the table !

if we could get an owner in between it would be a dream but we wont.

i <3 the youth set up and think ashleys process is great but if he ran it as a supporter and put the money the club earnt back into it and used the club to make money for itself instead of for ashley then we would be a force to be reckoned with imo.

Big Archie, I realise as a club financially we are solid as a rock, that is a plus point, I know that is important, I have been banging on about it for years.

But there is also a reason for the vast majority of fans being unhappy with MA, on the pitch it’s one step forward and two back so much of the time, frustrating is not the word, we have missed many chances to move forward during MA’s tenure, finishing fifth then stagnating like we did was criminal, he knows how much it would cost to compete at the top six level, will he vomit the outlay to that? I always remember him saying profit in monies will be ploughed back in to the club, he now has to start that process, will he? We are a soulless club for most fans and while they keep saying the players have spirit I’m afraid that does not reflect in virtually all the fans, he is making fortunes, it needs to be ploughed back in, he has a hell of a long way to go, I’m fed up with the feeling around this City regarding NUFC.

Things have to change because like most I really believe that a one place finish above last season will be a very happy conclusion for all at the club, but there is more to thus football club than that, it’s passionless, and it bloody hurts.

JD I can compare the stats as they all play in the same position and have to play with exactly the same teammates.
It`s all about opinions. Stats aside I think Haidara is the worst of the 3 positionally. He allows acres of space for the opposition. He looks excellent going forward but flatters to deceive. For all his galloping runs forward yesterday was his first assist.
