It’s looking like Newcastle will miss out on signing Dele Alli of MK Dons today, after we had been in the driver’s seat to sign him since early December.
Dele Alli – having medical at Spurs
Dele has been compared to a young Steven Gerrard, and there is news coming through that he will have a medical at White Hart Lane today.
And if that news is accurate he has not chosen Newcastle of the three Premier League clubs interested in him, with the other one being Aston Villa.
The Telegraph is reporting that Alli will choose Tottenham over Villa and Newcastle, and is due to be arriving at White Hart Lane today to take his medical.
Maybe the uncertainty over who will be the head coach at Newcastle was part of the reason Alli has turned away from Newcastle at the last moment.
But the news over the last couple of days was that Tottenham were moving in and reports had been that they were now the favorites to sign the 18 year-old wonder kid.
That was always going to be bad news for Newcastle when a bigger clubs like Spurs moved in, since Newcastle always refuse to be in a bidding war, so maybe Spurs offered £1M more for Dele tto the Dons and sealed the deal.
That’s more than likely what happened and there are at least seven – maybe more – clubs in England who have more ambition than Newcastle have, and are willing to pay slightly over the odds to get the deal done.
If this news is true it will be very disappointing for Newcastle fans, that we have missed out on a top England youngster, but the real truth is that the name of Newcastle United is no longer as big a draw to players as it was before Mike Ashley bought the club almost eight years ago.
We are now known as a frugal club which is run on a shoestring, with the finances being much more important than the quality of the team, and that’s almost the exact opposite when Freddy Shepherd was running the club.
There has to be a better balance somewhere in between those two extremes – and if we were willing to spend more money (and it’s certainly available) we could become a top side again.
But it’s looking more and more like Dele Alli will become a Spurs player today, and will be loaned back to MK Dons for the rest of the season.
Newcastle seem to have lost out on a really top young Englishman.

Comment #43Its not the extra million. If we were in the mix at all, it will be ambition. The whole Head Coach nonsense, rolling over in the cups, selling our best players mid-season. These are sending a message and it is being received loud and clear.

Comment #45I know we are all frustrated to have missed out on this young player. And most everyone on here wants to blame the club’s current ownership. (No permanent manager, too cheap, no ambition.)
But face the reality on this transfer: the lad didn’t want to come to Newcastle because of it’s remote NE location. He was seduced by the bright lights of London (much as Loic Remy was in our pursuit of him).
Of course a top class manager in place, more lucrative contracts and more ambitious ownership would help our recruitment, but sometimes a player just wants to play elsewhere.
Let’s move on and find players that would appreciate the honor of playing for the Toon Army, the most loyal and passionate supporters in England!
Howay the lads!!!

Comment #46Can’t blame him lots of pros to this move for him 1) better money 2) closer to home 3) ambitious club 4) they have a manager/head coach who wants him. The biggest downside is his chances of getting first team football are reduced and he won’t be playing in front of 52,000 Geordies. He should look what happened to Zaha or Rodwell
