Ivory Coast Reach Last Four – But Cheick Tiote Missing

In the two quarter-final games played last night in the African Cup of Nations, the Ivory Coast beat Algeria 3-1 and Ghana beat Guinea 3-0, and they join DR Congo and host nation Equatorial Guinea in the  semi-finals of the competition.

Cheick Tiote – hasn’t played in last two games

DR Congo will play Ivry Coast on Wednesday night, and the next day Ghana will play Equatorial Guinea with the final being on Sunday and the third place game the previous day.

If Ivory Coast don’t reach the final Cheick should be available for the game at home to Stoke on Sunday – assuming he’s fit.

It seemed like a comfortable win for Ivory Coast with goals from new Manchester City striker Wilfried Bony (brace) and a stoppage time goals from another former Newcastle target Gervinho, who is now at Roma.

But there was no Cheick Tiote last night, and he was not among the designated subs and the news is that he is carrying an injury.

Cheick was left out of the third group game because he had picked up two yellow cards in the first two games,  but he has not appeared in the last two games.

Maybe he is injured,  or maybe it’s because he is not in good form – but if he is going to move today on a transfer, you would think he would be rested – but it will be a huge surprise if Cheick is involved in any transfer move today.

Arsenal are a club who have expressed interest in Check Tiote last summer.

We don’t think that will happen, but we do expect a high possibility that Cheick will be sold in the summer, and he still has two and a half years to go on his Newcastle contract.

With Davide Santon likely moving out on loan today, it would be a little reckless to also let Tiote move in January.

Most clubs strengthen their squad in January, although Newcastle have proven they can do the opposite in these winter transfer windows.

We don’t expect Cheick to be moving anywhere today.

As was pointed out the other day, Tiote was injured in the second game. Even without the suspension he wouldn’t have played. Would be interesting to hear how bad the injury is, as if he is unlikely to play again he should be back in Newcastle receiving treatment. If they win someone can pick up his medal for him.

If Santon moves it is sensible as Haidara (primarily), Dummitt (if Haidara out) and (if all else fails) Raylor can cover the left back spot.

In fact I rate Haidara a better and more effective fullback than Santon. I have never liked a right footed player at left back.

Not surprised. He’s been missing here for a while.

Anita and Colback have played fullbacks, not the optimal solution though.

If he does go he should be replaced immediately by an understudy for Jaanmatt, and while they’re at it a couple of new CBs. I can see what they’re trying to do by bringing through the young lads but the team is suffering badly for the sake of spending a few quid.

Only Janmaat at right back and he’s going to be suspended at least 1 game.

    hibbit,
Pardew used Dummet there in the cup, but I think Anita is probably the option Carver would choose. Particularly once Abeid and De Jong are fully fit, as well as Tiote coming back from AFCON.

    Jail,
I agree. Sombody needs to be brought in to strengthen what is left of our defence. Fit defenders for the Stoke game would be Janmaat, Colo, Haidara and Willo. Plus some kids who have never featured in the Prem. (Depending on Dummett’s recovery.)

Dummet and Raylor are the only experienced two to come back as well. I’m happy for the kids to get the chance at the right time, but given the way our defence is performing (Garth Crooks unusual selection of Colo in his team of the week aside) then I wouldn’t be comfortable slotting them in anywhere at this time.

Far too thin on the ground at the back if Santon leaves. A replacement has to be forthcoming.

It’s been done to death but you should only be using players like Anita at RB as last resort, you need a natural RB to keep Jaanmatt on his toes, competition breeds success, Anita at RB says mid table, oh I get it now.

Santon sold or loaned with a view to a sale while Ryan Taylor was given a new contract in the summer … Nothing against R.T but it sums up this club no chance of this Ali lad coming now that spuds are supposedly sniffing around and who can blame him

    Ed,
Tiote was carried off the pitch by team mates at the end of the second group game.
    He’s injured
