In the two quarter-final games played last night in the African Cup of Nations, the Ivory Coast beat Algeria 3-1 and Ghana beat Guinea 3-0, and they join DR Congo and host nation Equatorial Guinea in the semi-finals of the competition.
Cheick Tiote – hasn’t played in last two games
DR Congo will play Ivry Coast on Wednesday night, and the next day Ghana will play Equatorial Guinea with the final being on Sunday and the third place game the previous day.
If Ivory Coast don’t reach the final Cheick should be available for the game at home to Stoke on Sunday – assuming he’s fit.
It seemed like a comfortable win for Ivory Coast with goals from new Manchester City striker Wilfried Bony (brace) and a stoppage time goals from another former Newcastle target Gervinho, who is now at Roma.
But there was no Cheick Tiote last night, and he was not among the designated subs and the news is that he is carrying an injury.
Cheick was left out of the third group game because he had picked up two yellow cards in the first two games, but he has not appeared in the last two games.
Maybe he is injured, or maybe it’s because he is not in good form – but if he is going to move today on a transfer, you would think he would be rested – but it will be a huge surprise if Cheick is involved in any transfer move today.
Arsenal are a club who have expressed interest in Check Tiote last summer.
We don’t think that will happen, but we do expect a high possibility that Cheick will be sold in the summer, and he still has two and a half years to go on his Newcastle contract.
With Davide Santon likely moving out on loan today, it would be a little reckless to also let Tiote move in January.
Most clubs strengthen their squad in January, although Newcastle have proven they can do the opposite in these winter transfer windows.
We don’t expect Cheick to be moving anywhere today.
