What’s Newcastle’s Best Team For Stoke?

It could well be after the decent performance and great result at Hull last Saturday that John Carver will start the same side at home to Stoke on Sunday.

john carver training

John Carver – will he play 4-4-2?
John will hold his press conference for the game tomorrow and we’ll get an injury update but we are assuming Paul Dummett will be fit again from his hamstring injury, and that Siem de Jong could even start the game on the bench.

We would normally think that Paul Dummett would be brought into central defense in place of Mike Williamson, but we may need Mike’s height to combat the 6’7″ Peter Crouch.

This is the side that started last saturday at Hull:

Krul
Janmaat Williamson Coloccini Haidara
Sissoko Anita Colback
Cabella Perez Ameobi

Massadio Haidara should stay at left back after his good performance last week at the KC Stadium.

Somehow we need to get Papiss Cisse into the starting line-up, assuming that knee is up to playing full games.

Papiss only played about 35 minutes at the African Cup of Nations for Senegal in Equatorial Guinea, and came  on for the last eight minutes at Hull.

Maybe Carver could play in a 4-4-2 formation with this side:

Krul
Janmaat Williamson Coloccini Haidara
Sissoko Anita Colback Ameobi
Cabella Perez

And perhaps Gabby Obertan is pushing for a starting place in the side too.

What would your team be for the Stoke game?

I expect a 4-4-2 or 4-2-3-1 formation with the same players who started against Hull:

    Krul
    Janmaat Williamson Coloccini Haidara
    Sissoko Anita Colback Ameobi
    Cabella Perez

I think Anita will not be given as much room and space as Hull did and therefore wouldn’t be surprised if Abeid starts.

I have a feeling that Cisse, de Jong and Obertan will make an appearance in the second half.

Simple. Stick with the same team. Or drop Collo or Willo for Dummet if he is fit. But that doesn’t matter much, all 3 are pretty useless. But I would edge towards Dummet, he is local (which makes a difference) and every game at CB he should get a bit better. He lacks the pace and threat going forward to be a LB.

Good point Slank, against a more combative team like Stoke maybe Abeid is a bit more robust than Anita

On Ashley – Rangers. I said all along it looks like he will go there eventually, I think people underestimate the value of Champions League football to Ashley. I have been all over Europe and you see his stores much more than you would expect. It would be huge for him and SD to be there every year. Is it worth more than EPL tv fees? That seems to be the main question. But I have a feeling Ashley is sick of the club all together.

Rangers fans are deluded if they think Ashley is not good news for them. Scottish clubs need less transfer investment. His aspirations will be higher in that league. He has already proved that by sending 5 Newcastle players (for free I’m sure) to get them promoted.

    Tinman,

If tenth in the Premier League was where the action is exposure wise, why aren’t the Manchester and London elites battling with us for that spot?

Getting close to seeing just how exactly DeJong and Sissoko can play on the same pitch together…….DA DUN, DA DUN!!! It’s a mystery of Lucanesque proportion.

I don’t think it matters what team we put out, we will have to score more than them, Our defence is pants, and Coloccini was terrible against Hull, and any other team would have scored against us making the game a lot closer.

The fact that he is the captain should make him a little more focussed on the game, but he is the least vocal of the players on the field.

Any team like Stoke who have tall attacking players will give us all sorts of problems at the back, neither of our CB’s win many headers, and our full backs seem slow to react to the second balls.

I think they will score against us, just hope we can score more.

One from about 1998 I should think. Other than that, Dummet in for Willo. Abeid for Anita

    My team:
    Krul
    Janmaat, Willo, Colo, Haidara
    Sissoko, Abeid, Colback
    Obertan, Perez, Cabella

Subs at some stage: Sammy, de Jong and Cissé if we need goals.

De jong may make the bench

Its an old adage but you don’t change a winning team!

But ad probs drop Perez for Cisse being a home game and Cisse has a decent record against Stoke

Don’t see it ending well. Fab The Fairy and his band of pixies in defence will get monstered. The little people in the middle of the park, Anita and Colback will get trampled on, and the featherweights up front, Cabella and Perez will get knocked from pillar to post.

One of Carvers actions as new coach to show his authority should be to appoint a new captain (if that is in his remit)
Colo is Pardews appointment and the best way to stamp a new identity is through the selection of a captain.
However Colo’s influence on the dressing room may be too great
An ageing captain is a problem many clubs have to cope with , even the great Barcelona had the same problem with Carles Puyol.

Puyol As barca club captain STILL only played a cameo role in his latter days. He captained while on the pitch, and motivated while off. It showed that an aging club captain could still have a massive part to play, even with diminishing pitch time. I dont see any reason why nufc couldn’t do likewise (appart from our distinct lack of other cbs 😀 )

I think it will be an interesting match. Hughes, a bit like Poyet seemed to have Pardew’s number. (The 5-1 victory was extremely unlikely when Stoke had 11 men on the pitch). With Carver in there now Hughes will have to try and work us out a bit more and I think we’ll take advantage of that.

I think a hard fought win, maybe 2-1.

Stoke are going to work very hard, using their strength and stature to put pressure on us. Anita, Perez and Cabella will struggle so IMO the team will have to be changed to possibly:
    ————-Riviere–Cisse
    Sammy–Colback–Abeid–Sissoko
    Haidara—–Collo–Willo–Janmaat
    ——————–Krul

Dummett, de Jong, Obertan should not be brought back from injury too early and should not start.

Actually, because the times Pardew got it right are so few, i remember one of those times was when he out-stoked stoke at stoke 😀 (while pulis was there). So it has worked…. ONCE only.

Attacking them has never worked either as we don’t have the necessary quality. We have to let them play onto us and turn the ball over quickly.

    Team i think will play:

    Krul
    Janmaat-Willo-Colo-Haidara
    Anita-colback
    Cabella-Sissoko-Ameobi
    Perez

Would like to see Dummett partnering Willo at the back and Abeid in for Anita although to be fair Anita played well last week so deserves another go.

Think we need Cisse starting ASAP, Perez is fantastic but think Cisse will score more now we are setting up to attack.

Very happy that JC sees Haidara as 1st choice LB and Dummett as a CB though. Progress from 1 month ago.
