The St. Etienne head coach Christophe Galtier has been strongly linked with the Newcastle head coach job since late December, and it was rumored that some of the Newcastle hierarchy – maybe Chief Scout Graham Carr – thought he would make a good head coach for Newcastle.
Christophe Galtier – no approach from Newcastle
And in early January when Newcastle were being linked with the French coach, St. Etienne slammed the reports saying they simply were not true.
Christophe has been interviewed by beIN sports, and he has made a little bit of a mockery of the stories linking him with the Newcastle job.
This is some of that he has said:
“I have not had any discussion or any approach from Newcastle.” “I read this when I was on vacation. My kids sent me a text in English for a laugh and I didn’t understand. The text said ‘read the papers!’”
“I have had no contact with Newcastle and I am not out of contract, my only goal is to succeed in St.Etienne . The rumours of my departure to Marseille? More fantasies peddled by some. I’m not going to Marseilles – period. “
And Galtier only last week said a similar thing to RMC, that there had been no contact between him and Newcastle:
“No, I have not been contacted,” “I am under contract, so my future can go through St. Etienne. “Things are very clear between my leaders and me.”
If we are to believe these reports (and why wouldn’t we?), Newcastle have not contacted either St. Etienne or Christophe Galtier about the head coach position at Newcastle.
And while we were linked with a number of continental coaches like Frank de Boer and Remi Garde among others when it was clear that Pardew was leaving in late December, it’s now beginning to look like Mike Ashley may stick with appointing another Englishman to the vacant position in the summer.
Maybe Steve McClaren or John Carver – or somebody right out of the blue – which is exactly what happened with the appointment of Alan Pardew in December of 2010.
