Newcastle must have a decent enough chance of getting all 3 points tomorrow if we can play as well as we did in our 3-0 win at Hull last week, and if we can tighten up on defense a bit.
Papiss Cisse – will he start tomorrow?
We’d like to somehow have both Papiss Cisse and Ayoze Perez start up front for Newcastle, so we have more of a goal-scoring threat – especially at home.
This is a possible side John Carver could start, if he was to play in a 4-4-2 attacking formation:
Krul
Janmaat Williamson Coloccini (c) Haidara
Cabella Sissoko Colback Ameobi
Cisse Perez
That would mean Vurnon Anita would have to drop down to the bench, after having a goods game last week, and somehow we don’t think John Carver will start that side.
While that’s the side we’d like to see starting tomorrow, this is the side we think John will actually start:
Krul
Janmaat Williamson Coloccini (c) Haidara
Cabella Anita Colback Sissoko Ameobi
Perez
That’s the same side that started at Hull last week and played quite well.
We would normally have expected that Paul Dummett would come back into the side at center-back, but with 6’7″ Peter Crouch likely to start, we think Mike Williamson will stay at center back to counteract Peter’s heading ability.
It could be that John Carver starts Paul at left-back, but especially after he said yesterday that players who play well will keep their place – we don’t think he will leave Massadio out of the side after a very good performance last week.
What would your team be for tomorrow – and what formation would you start and why?
And fans seem fairly confident we can win this game tomorrow.
A win would be simply terrific.

in the end you lost mate and for a blogger who’s hardly ever away, you certainly have been hidden away since the loss.

Comment #86It’s really a shame it seems we spend all of January without interview one single candidate for the position of head coach!
…will that mean we won’t be interviewing anyone in the summer as well?

The choice is already made mate, Carver has it.
80 applications, more like 80 rebukes.

Comment #89firebug…I would just really like to know what constitute an applicant – would I be an applicant if I had applied?
…I mean aren’t we talking about people being qualified? and don’t they contact candidates they (the club) are interested in?
Wouldn’t that be how you go about it?

They would have to have the qualifications, I would suspect that some agents would put their clients forward, but not sure about 80 applications, But I just don’t think they wanted anyone, and always knew it was going to be Carver.

Comment #93firebug…I came to that conclusion quickly as well – wanted to give them the benefit of a doubt – but clearly they are just pi$$-takers and we are the fools for going along with it!

They take their time for one reason only, to make it look to the fans that they are working hard behind the scenes.
The reality is the only real work going on is cost cutting, how can they save a few quid in the next twelve months.
To be honest we don’t even need to speculate on this as actions speak louder than words, and we can see the evidence before us.

If you recall Charnley said there was over 80 applicants …. when they sorted out the cranks and no-hopers there was about 6 credible ones which surprised him .They talked to 4 early January
They defo talked to Schuster in late Jan cos he said as much in the German press.
Schuster was available immediately which leads one to believe their favourite candidate could not start (for whatever reason ) until Spring
That is not to say Carver is still in with a big chance
My gut feeling is that it’s Steve McClaren , as he ticks a lot of boxes.

Apparently they also talked to Remi Garde in London, But talking to someone and offering them a job are two entirely different things mate.

Comment #97Jeff…I did read we have had something like 80 applicants, but I didn’t read only 6 were credible!
…what stroke be as peculiar was that Penfold never said they had interviewed anyone and ever since JC was given the job (well until summer they say) a few of those the press linked us to have come out either saying they are not interested (or hinted at it) or said they haven’t been in contact with Newcastle!
McClaren said something like he was not interested in the Newcastle job a few weeks back! I would say this though about McClaren. First and foremost I hope we are not going to appoint him – I just don’t think he fits the bill and secondly I cannot see him working under these conditions (and I don’t think we comes cheap either).
I think the club is nothing but a bunch of pi$$-takers. As firebug says, action speaks louder than words!

McClaren fits the club template
He is second to none at bringing on young players
He did it at Man U , Middlesbrough , and Twente Enschede and twice at Derby

If they have an agreement with someone currently contracted to another club they have to tread very carefully and play their cards very close to their chest

Comment #104Think abeid might edge Anita for physical prowess in that centre. More likely as we’re at home id expect Sissoko to take anitas place, perez to drop into #10 role and cisse to start!
Personally i’d like to see de jong at some point.

Comment #106Which is it – bated or baited? We have baited hooks and baited traps, but bated – what’s that? Bated doesn’t even seem to be a real word, where else do you hear it? Having said that, ‘baited breath’ makes little sense either. How can breath be baited? With worms?
There seems little guidance in contemporary texts. Search in Google and you’ll find about the same number of hits for ‘baited breath’ as ‘bated breath’. In one of the best selling books of all time, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (whose publisher could surely have afforded the services of a proof-reader), we have:
“The whole common room listened with baited breath.”
As so often is the case, help is found in the writings of the Bard. The earliest known citation of the phrase is from Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice, 1596:
What should I say to you? Should I not say
‘Hath a dog money? is it possible
A cur can lend three thousand ducats?’ Or
Shall I bend low and in a bondman’s key,
With bated breath and whispering humbleness, Say this;
‘Fair sir, you spit on me on Wednesday last;
You spurn’d me such a day; another time
You call’d me dog; and for these courtesies
I’ll lend you thus much moneys’?
‘Bated’ is simply a shortened form of ‘abated’, meaning ‘to bring down, lower or depress’. ‘Abated breath’ makes perfect sense and that’s where the phrase comes from.

I will concede the spelling:
Definition of bated in English:
ADJECTIVE
(in phrase with bated breath)
In great suspense; very anxiously or excitedly:
he waited for a reply to his offer with bated breath

Comment #119Ashley’s going to love it if Palace finish above us! I will have to laugh a little bit as well. We may go either way. I don’t think we have the depth to stay 11th or above but we’ll wait and see. Injuries to key players will skewer us though as we have literally no decent backups now.

Comment #120@jesper – i don’t want Mclaren here but he had zero say at twente and Wolfsburg! Hes also not got full control at Derby although i think he has influence.
His friendship with Carr would probably see him content that communications about incomings is good.
Lets face it hes never going to manage a team that doesn’t sell its best players when the monies right
