Newcastle were heavily linked in the summer with a move for 23 year-old Celtic center-back Virgil van Dijk, and with a week to go before the end of the window the Scotsman reported that the Tyneside club were considering a deadline day swoop for the Dutchman.
Virgil van Dijk – 23 year-old Dutch defender
It didn’t happen, even though we needed reinforcements in central defense, and then on the last day of the transfer window we made a strange move and sent Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa on loan to Roma, and he signed on for them permanently last month.
Add to that the fact that Steven Taylor is out for the season injured after rupturing his Achilles in the New Year Day’s game against Burnley, and we are now two center-backs short – and we heard this morning that Paul Dummett has picked up a knee injury. 🙁
Lee Charnley has said since the summer that a center-back was lined up to replace Mapou – but the deal fell through at the last moment.
But of course Newcastle still went ahead with the loan move leaving the club exposed at center-back for the season – why didn’t Newcastle pull out?
We’ve been linked with the 6’4″ Dutchman van Dijk since April of 2012 by our records, and Newcastle will likely move for him in the summer.
Even though we have Jamaal Lascelles joining us from Nottingham Forest in the summer, we still need another top class center-back brought in.
One thing that may be worrying Newcastle is that Celtic were reported to want £8M for Virgil, after they paid only around £2.5M to Groningen in June of 2013.
Van Dijk is an ambitious player and is keen to make the full Dutch squad when the Euro 2016 finals in France come around in 2016, and this is just one reason he wants to move to the Premier League.
Virgil has played 86 times for Celtic with 12 goals, and he has a good knack of scoring goals, and we need more goalscorers at Newcastle – whatever position they play.
We hope this lad is Newcastle’s number one defensive target this summer – he would be an excellent buy for us.
