Newcastle Could Sell This Center-Back This Summer

Steven Taylor has just 16 months left on his contract at Newcastle,  and since January of 2010, he has suffered a lot of long term injuries, which have kept him out of the side for long periods.

Steven Taylor in action this season

Steven picked up a knee injury in January of 2010, during our promotion season, which kept him out until the summer but then he did his shoulder in on his return at Carlisle in pre-season,  and was out until December of that year.

And he’s been out a number of times since then, and the last time was when Steven picked up a bad Achilles injury  against Burnley on New Year’s Day, and is expected to be out for the rest of the season.

Steven has now turned 29 and our only other two experienced center-backs are Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson, who have started in the team under John Carver.

Colo is now 33 and his contract runs out the same time as Steven’s, and Mike Williamson is now 31, so Newcastle will have to think long-term about the center-back position at Newcastle in the summer.

We do have Jamaal Lascelles coming into the first team squad in the summer from his season long loan spell at Nottingham Forest, and hopefully Newcastle bring in a top young center-back – somebody like 23 year-old Virgil van Dijk of Celtic this summer.

And it wouldn’t surprise us at all if Newcastle finally let Steve Taylor leave the club this summer, before he becomes a free agent at the end of June of next year.

In the last five years due to injuries and sometimes due to poor form,  Steven has only played 85 times for the first team with four goals – an average of just 17 times a season.

And even though he made his Newcastle debut under Sir Bobby Robson in early 2004, since then in 12 seasons he has amassed only 257 first team appearances with 15 goals.

Some Premier League clubs would be willing to pay maybe £2M or £3M for the experienced defender, and that’s another reason why Steven could be sold in the summer.

Look for the center-backs at Newcastle next season to be Colo, Willo, Jamaal Lascelles, Paul Dummett and somebody brough in over the summer.

It’s one area where we need to have a top player come in this summer.

What do you think?

I can understand why people still hold season tickets.

What I can’t understand is why anybody would PAY to go to watch a cup game KNOWING the club don’t want to win.

Not many go to reserve games, why pay double to watch them in a cup?

    This is an interesting one.

Apparently the transfer window in the UAE is open for a week yet.

The Emirates of Dubai have made an offer too good to refuse for Pappis Cisse and he is on his way out of England

Taylors actually our best centreback! Willo is nowhere near premier league quality and colo looks past it (tho he looks better when playing alongside taylor)
Personally i think we need 2 centre halfs with Taylor and Willo Moving on. (No chance of colo leaving)
Think we need someone like Van Dijk as ed suggests and an older more experienced finished article defender like Winston Reid. Something tells me we’ll just get Lascelles tho

Our club is a joke. And we’re all a bunch of clowns if we thinknit will get any better under tight arsed Ashley. No consistancy and no attractive football season after season. We’re not even a shadow of the great club we once were.

Every fan that is based at Newcastle ahould do their upmost to try and force Ashley out ASAP.

When he plays, he gives it his all, throwing his body around, resulting in becoming a sick note and at twenty nine close to his sell by date.
But just who would want to sign a 29yr old sick note ?
On the other hand all we hear about are new midfielders, when we are desperately in need of center backs ?

We need a goal scoring midfielder and a top quality striker.
2 strong and quick centre backs – one proven and one up and coming.
If we could keep Taylor injury free I would keep him as he is one of us. Taylor, Colback and one of the young Geordies up front would be a good spine for the team- hopefully Adam Campbell will break through. Dummett can potentially take over from Taylor.
I would sell Williamson and let Coloccini go.
