Newcastle have been tracking Marseilles winger Andre Ayew for over two years now, and news from France that his club Marseilles say they can do nothing to stop the player leaving this summer.
Andre Ayew – Marseilles helpless to keep him
There are various reports that his contract runs out in the summer, but there were also reports in December that he signed a one year deal and he confirmed that.
We will assume that news is not accurate and that his contract runs out this summer.
The latest news today is that a spokesman for his French club Marseilles has released a statement saying there’s not much the club can do to keep the winger/striker in France, because of their poor financial position.
This is what a spokesman for his club has told le10Sport:
“It is absolutely right to expect to achieve a high level of remuneration. We will have a discussion with him, because he is very important to us. But we can’t do anything,”
Andre wants to move to England, and there were reports that Tottenham, as well as Liverpool and Newcastle were interested in signing him last January.
The situation at Marseilles is that they are so short of money and that Andre could even be asked to take a pay cut, which he is not willing to do.
Andre could stay at Marseilles, but only if they offer him a big wage increase, but it appears they are not able to do that because of their financial situation, and Andre will certainly not take a pay cut to stay on in France.
This is what Andre said recently about the financial situation at Marseilles:
“Marseilles has financial worries, and they cannot pay certain wages. I am at the OM , I can still be there tomorrow. In my head, everything is open.”
“Whether to go, I will. But I like the OM . There will soon be a meeting. A pay cut to stay in OM ? No, a player wants to progress in all aspects . “
There have been reports that various clubs have been negotiating with the star winger, and one of them is Newcastle, with Liverpool Tottenham and perhaps Arsenal being the other clubs.
With Marseilles having to fix their poor financial situation they are looking at reducing the wages of several of their players, and they could then elect to leave the club for clubs who can pay their wages.
29 year-old striker Andre-Pierre Gignac is one of their players who could seek a move away from the French club, although he is probably too old to be considered by Newcastle.
With the wage cut policy at the French club, we could even see Newcastle moving in and trying to get some good deals on some other players in the Marseilles’ squad.
Marseilles are currently second top of the French League two points behind Lyon and level on points with PSG.
It’s now looking like a three horse race for the French Championship this season, with St. Etienne now 8 points adrift in 4th place.
