Newcastle Recall Top Youngster From Loan Deal

John Carver has recalled top 17 year-old midfielder Callum Roberts from his loan deal across the River Tyne at Gateshead,  and it seems it’s because Callum is not being played enough by Gateshead manager Gary Mills.

callum roberts u21

Callum Roberts – made his debut for Newcastle earlier this year

The 17-year-old midfielder went on loan for the rest of the season at The Heed last month,  with 20 year-old Adam Campbell, but John Carver is not happy about the situation.

This is what John has said today about Callum:

“He was left out of the team so we brought him back because they wanted him to play in their reserve team.” “We thought he was better off playing in our U21 team than Gateshead with all due respect.”

The reason youngsters are sent out on loan is to give them first team games, and if that’s not happening – for whatever reason – they would be better off back at Newcastle and playing for the U21s.

It seems that things came to a head when Gateshead wanted to play Callum in their Reserve team – but it’s a much higher standard in Newcastle’s reserve team – now the U21 side.

So it’s not surprising that John has recalled Roberts, and it gives a message to Gateshead that if they are not going to play the youngsters in their first  team,  they will be brought home.

They will also be training with higher class players at Benton, so this seems fair enough to us.

Callum played three first team games for Gateshead,  and he’s played 9 times this season for the U21 side with two goals and two assists, and once for the first team.

Adam Campbell has played 5 times for Gateshead and has scored 4 goals – so it seems the 20 year-old is getting back to his goal-scoring form.

Comments welcome.

I see Charlton are looking in to footage which appears to show a couple having sex on the pitch.

I wonder if I sent off highlights of our game against City, any one will look in to the incident of 11 players getting well and truly f*****d on the Ethiad pitch?

Anyway…I see Shearer has told fans to come to terms with the fact we’re a mid-table club. Wtf is that about?

We’ve come to terms with that’s where the club sees and wants us to be, why we should simply accept that is beyond me.

    AC,
Even so, I’m still fairly certain that he spent a year or two working as a scout under Wenger. I’ve seen it mentioned on a number of things when he has been linked with us.

Lil…I’m trying to remember if I’ve ever seen a youngster of ours ever being referred to as anything other than a top youngster.

From prev thread – Garde freelance scouted for arsenal on numerous occasions! Can’t remember which players he recommended to Arsene, might have been Anelka?? Pretty sure he ran the rule over Diaby ( a fine player when fit) too….
Lyon are reaping the rewards this season of gardes work with Fofana, Lacazette especially and a few other players…
Not sure what we’ve got to work with youth wise?
Kemen looks like potential? Maybe Satka and streete tho i don’t think so and Lacelles will come in above them.
Vuckic has huge technical ability and Abeid should be amongst first choices in the first team already but after That i think Roberts, Armstrong and Campbell are over hyped because theyre geordies

Off topic but probably pertinent. I saw in the news this week that Italian surgeon Sergio Canavero states that they will be able to do head transplants in about two years time. The skill of surgeons like this is absolutely mindblowing really beyond comprehension.
I don’t think that two years is too long to wait for “success” – a bit like Toon fans having to wait and wait for success – two years is nothing.
I anticipate that folk like Jeff from Benwell will have been on the phone already to Sergio -booking their operation. I think that the anticipated results will be a vast improvement on how he looks now.

Think carver is showing that Pardew is a good manager. Hes the wrong manager for nufc! Plays abysmal football and his arrogant beyond belief but he Does have ability getting results with a poor side.
We have a p*ss poor defence and no strikers…
Remember some fifa xbox expert saying (about the game) look at your strongest attributes and play to them. Carver should do this! We have a very athletic, strong midfield. Abeid, Colback , cabella and Sissoko cover alot of ground and our 2 fullbacks are very attacking.
A 4-1-2-1-2 narrow diamond would suit the players well, Perez and cisse up top and janmaat and haidara overlapping! It could even drop fluidly into a 3-5-2/5-3-2 with abeid dropping in as a sweeper and the fullbacks pushing on

I think Lascelles will play a reasonable part in our season next season, and i think Krul could be cashed in on with darlow becoming number 1, alnwick second and woodman promoted to 3rd choice.

IMO the differences between Remi Garde and Frank de Boer is Garde seems a little more pro active on the youth development thing. As pointed out already on this blog the Ajax youth academy model has been in place since de boer actually came through as a youth player. Yes, i think De boer brought Ajax a more modern and attractive style of play, certainly more successful, than Jol’s. However i think Ajax have the youth coaches in place to develop those players for de boer, whereas i think Remi Garde played a more active role and got more involved with the youth setup with Lyon and actively brought more youth players through himself (And his coaches of course) for example lacazette, umiti, grenier, gonalons, and like de boer, Garde brought Lyon a new style of play.

@jamestoon – agree, actually lyon have long had a great youth set up too just Garde was the first coach to rely solely on it without mixing it with big signings!
Personally i prefer Tuchel to all of the candidates, not sure what the club are playing at waiting till the summer! No other clyb would make that decision with 5 months of a season to go…
Unless they are waiting for Klopp, Pep or Simeone they should have made something happen! Money would have brought garde and tuchel out of sabbatical

May sound deluded but i genuinely think if Ashley gave charnley/carr a decent transfer budget, got rid of carver/stone/woodman and went for someone like Jurgen Klopp, i do think he’d be interested, i think he’d see us as a stepping stone, as a project to really prove himself with a new and more difficult challenge.

And yes Tuchel is my 3rd choice, liking what i’ve read and heard about him, aggressive high pressing. and known to bring youth players through and work on a tight budget.

I actually think if the salary and ambition was there Klopp would be interested!
He wants premier league job and theres none going at the top for the forseeable future, maybe Man City? But think they’ll go For Pep! Chelsea, spurs, man utd, liverpool, arsenal arent getting rid of their managers anytime soon
Ambition would be the big thing

And, as there seems to be some confidence that Garde’s lined up to join us in the summer, just where does that come from?

Ok he was at the Ethiad the other week, but he was commentating for a French radio station. His comments when asked about joining us have been non-commital. He’s cited respecting Carver, confidentiality but that means nowt! Could he have been sounded out about joining us and said ‘No’, then asked to keep that in confidence?

His comments say nothing and frankly (I hope I’m wrong), I don’t think he’ll arrive at SJP – even with his own backroom staff who may just be a tad expensive for Ashley’s liking.

A good bet, were I a gambler would be Rednapp supporting Carver – heavens forbid.

What? No reference to certain folk having been under the knife for an R sole transplant and the R Sole rejecting the recipient?

So what’s up with Aarons then? A brief flurry of very promising football early in the season, then an injury. Rushed back too soon and injured again, this time for almost 4 months and counting…

Given the reported issues with his wage demands and our apparently derisory offer to him, I think something fishy is going on.

    Maybe we’ve lost him already?

Two for one? Didn’t know Sports Direct did transplants!

Mmm, Now which op would be best for Ashley? A head transplant I think – there’s a chance, given the right donor, we may see a more humane Ashley.

But then, they could transplant the head off Grey’s Monument and that’d probably him a better person!
