You cannot accuse 50-year-old John Carver of not talking a good game, and again yesterday in his press conference, he was full of positive words that the players are ready for Saturday’s test against second bottom Aston Villa, and he hopes to get the win to make up for the 5-0 thrashing last week by Premier League reigning Champions Manchester City.
John Carver with his players in training
But John Carver will not be able to talk himself into the head coach job at Newcastle, and the only way to do that is to start to win some games and in his first 8 games in charge John has just one win.
That’s not a particularly good record, and Carver only has 20 games to show what he can do, so he’s already 40% through his trial period, and if he is to get the job full time he’s got to start winning a lot more games.
In his press conference it was noted that we are essentially 5 points out of 10th place now because of our poor goal difference, and John was asked if finishing in the top ten is now impossible.
This is what he said:
“Listen, I am not giving up on anything. You have got to go for as high as you can. If you don’t do that, you have got no ambition and that’s certainly not the case with regard to the players and myself.”
“We want to go for as high up that league as we can and we will endeavour to do that.” “We have seen it with this team and this group of players that every now and again, we do take a bit of a drubbing.”
“It’s how we react to that. In the past we have reacted really well, and I expect that again.” “Off the back of the result we have just had, if they are not motivated and ready to prove a point and put things right after last weekend, then they shouldn’t be professional footballers.”
“I am hoping the result of last week will be enough to make them so determined that we need to win the game.” “We have got some tough games coming up, so it is important and we do know there’s a little bit of pressure on.”
“But good players can deal with pressure and we have got to handle that.”
It’s a very good opportunity tomorrow to put right what happened at the Etihad Stadium last Saturday, in Newcastle’s worst performance and biggest defeat of the season.
A win is what we need, and that would be a terrific result, and it’s one of those games where the result is more important than the performance – we need the points.
Comments welcome.

Comment #41I suppose that’s not saying much although he is rather and scarily intelligent for 6 years. A steaming turd has more tactical nouse than the arselick and at least offers something albeit a stench and warmth.

Comment #42It seems I’ve killed the blog. I suppose with it being 03:24 in the morning might have something to do with it though. I’m bored. Sat in the main entrance drinking unhealthy amounts of caffeine, I might aswell eat it out of the jar/dispenser raw. Entertain me blog. Now.

Comment #44AC I’m not much at entertaining, but someone who’s up at 3:30 am should at least get an answer. Here in the Rocky Mountains it’s only a bit past 9 pm.

Comment #45Hurrah. Well done that man lol. I’m used to staying up all hours as I work nights so when your kids in the hospital it comes in handy.
I’ve developed a bit of a coffee problem now though as Friday is usually my day off and I’d be tucked up in bed. Bit of a long stretch as I’ve been up since 6PM Thursday and it’s now 04:20 Saturday. My heads battered to the extent I couldn’t possibly work out how many hours that is. By the way I don’t expect you to reply I’m just waffling on but thanks for the initial one lol.
Rocky mountains eh. Always something I’ve wanted to see but it’s mahoosive. Doesn’t it run pretty much all along the West Coast and into Canuck territory? Vast so wouldn’t know where to start even if I managed by some miracle to breach the oceanic divide.

Comment #48AC The Rockies stretch from Montana to New Mexico (where I am) in the US & like you said up into Canada. We’re 7 hours behind England, so your early afternoon games are around 5:00 am here. I usually just read the blog without responding because the comments are normally made hours before I read them, but I saw you were commenting just a while ago, hence my response. What’s your kid in the hospital for?

Comment #51To cut a very long story short – he had groin pains and it turned out to be massive amounts of Synovial fluid near his hip sitting on a major nerve so had to go under the knife Thursday night. He was in agony with it, couldn’t stand, walk, go to the toilet. He’s only 6 too so he’s suffered pretty bad. Hopefully on the mend now. We’ve just gotta wait for the cultures to come back and hopefully they’ll be clear.
Must be a pain reading all the shite on here after the fact lol.

Comment #52Puts things into perspective tbh mate. I’d never really understood when parents would say things like “I wish I could take the pain for them” or similar but before he went down getting put under and in agony I wished it was me!
Let’s hope we get a result today it’ll cheer him up big time.
I’m off anyway as he’ll probably be awake soon. Laters.

Comment #53A picture tells a thousand words. Aspiring Newcastle Manager John Carver has the players gather in a semi circle, and with whistle in mouth instructs the squad to pay close attention whilst his most technically gifted player demonstrates with admirable concentration and determination how to make a five yard pass while under no pressure whatsoever.
