Newcastle got a valuable 3 points this afternoon at home to Aston Villa with a good goal after 37 minutes from – who else – Papiss Cisse who turned an excellent Daryl Janmaat low cross into the net for his 11th Premier League goal of the season in only 18 appearances.
Papiss Cisse scores after 37 minutes
But it took two great saves by Tim Krul from Benteke in the first half, and then Cleverly in the second half to keep us in the gamea and get a clean sheet afetr an agonziing 6 minutes of added time.
The result of this game was always more important than the display, and it’s a good 3 points for the lads – the second win in Carver’s nine games in charge – and it takes us up to 35 points, but we’re still in 11th place.
We are 4 points behind Stoke, who beat Hull 1-0 at home, and West Ham – who lost at home 3-1 today to Alan Pardew’s Crystal Palace in the early game.
Let us know who you think was Newcastle’s best player this afternoon.
We’ll have a report out soon.
Comments welcome.

Comment #3Cisse once again proving the doubters wrong by single handidly keeping us in the Premier league for the second time with vital goals .
Might not be the best all round footballer, but the lad scores goals and that’s what he is meant to do as a striker after all .

Comment #4I think Coloccini was MOTM with several crucial blocks. This game should have been easier as a couple great opportunities, especially Obertan’s went begging. Still, a win is a win. Villa really do look like relegation material.

Everyone knows he scores lots of goals, so who are these ‘doubters’?

Comment #6good fighting result today, coloccini was a giant at the back, hope that shuts the doubters up on this blog, but what on earth was Obertan doing on the pitch, he lacks confidence to beat his man, does not run with the ball and squanders chances every game he plays.

Comment #7Scrappy game but you can’t fault the effort. We still lack that inventive link between forwards and midfield. I still think Rivierre will come good but the management have to persist with his inclusion. I’m back for Wednesday’s game so hopefully the atmosphere will turn up a notch because it’s been piss poor of late.

Comment #8I am as happy as anyone to celebrate a narrow home victory at home against a side that has now lost its last seven games.
Villa’s worst run for 52 years.
I won’t sob when they go down.
There has been a lot of talk about mid-table mediocrity.
People argue, quite rightly, that mid-table is NOT mediocrity. Not for us. Not historically.
G2 will crop up later, using that phrase.
G2. Mid table is not mediocrity.
The argument that it is, is mediocrity.
But we are not a mid-table team. We will not finish mid-table.
A year ago we were all outraged at the suggestion we could not compete with Southampton and Swansea.
Next week, the club will raise Carver’s arm aloft for defeating a bottom two club on a record losing streak. It might get him the job.
That’s mediocrity.

Comment #9Sammy giving good corners! Yes we had good crosses from corners… that actually happened today!
Much needed points too….was I dreaming!?
Good win although against better opposition we would have drawn or lost that as Villa still had plenty of chances to score. We were lucky not to get punished by some woeful defending at times.
