Tim Krul only played in one penalty shoot-out in the World Cup. but he is still a World Cup legend because last summer in the quarter-final game against Costa Rica just before the end of extra time Dutch manager Louis van Gaal replaced his regular goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen and Tim made two great saves and went the right way for every single penalty and Holland were in the semi-final winning the shoot-out 4-3.
Louis van Gaal hugs hero Tim Krul after penalty shoot-out
That is the only time in World Cup history a goalkeeper has been substituted before a penalty shoot-out and it quickly made Tim into a National hero in Holland.
Tim talked about that to nufcTV today, before reflecting on a great win for Newcastle yesterday – although the display of the lads was mediocre:
” We had a great 10 weeks, I learnt a lot from him and obviously the goalkeeping coach there as well, Frans Hoek. We had a really good 10 weeks, memorable forever. I will never forget those experiences we had there.
I am looking forward to seeing him on Wednesday – and taking three points from him. Wednesday is a massive game. They are always big, big games against Manchester United here and we are confident because they don’t like coming here.”
“That’s the least we had to do, just put a proper graft in, blocks on the line, blocks on the edge.” “We just helped each other out really well and I am really proud of the team, the way we reacted after last week.”
It was a gutsy performance by Newcastle and in the second half in quick succession Fab Coloccini blocked a shot and Mehdi Abeid blocked another shot – and you cannot fault the heart of this Newcastle team.
Now we need to beat Manchester United on Wednesday night before a 10 day break – and the Red devils are vulnerable this season, just like they were last season.
Tim saved the first (from Bryan Ruiz) and one and fourth penalties (from Michael Umana) he faces against Costa Rica and the last save that sent Holland through to the semi-finals of the World Cup was a truly world-class.
They lost on penalties to Argentina but van Gaal had already made three substitutions before extra time ran out and Holland lost in the penalty shoot-out and Jasper Cillessen couldn’t do a “Tim Krul” – and they lost 4-2 on penalties.
Relive the memories of the Newcastle becoming the hero in Holland and watch the Holland number one goalkeeper the first one to rush for Tim after his amazing final save.
He made Louis van Gaal look like a genius.
Relive one of the big memories of last year’s World Cup in Brazil.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QTo-8-ZAkUA
That’s got to be Tim’s greatest ever moment in his football career – well until Newcastle win the Champions League.
Comments welcome.

Comment #2Ok, legend may be stretching it.
On your past articles, get over it Ed, your hero is gone 🙂
Ok, his legacy still remains (dross football, more losses than wins), but there is hope: quite a few good players, lots of cash, prospect of a new coach, safety.

Comment #4I would love it if fatty spent decent money on a new Head Coach and players, just love it.
Sadly it’s not gonna happen. We are stuck with Carver and 2-3 unknown players (under 26 of course) signed next season. very depressing indeed.

Comment #5Well we won yesterday and the points are crucial to avoid relegation. But in all honesty it was a battle of two sad sack teams. We were barely better than them and they are poor indeed. They had several excellent opportunities to score. Ashley sat there and looked bored. No wonder with the lack of entertainment in front of him.

Comment #6Desperate article I see. The World Cup is over and the Netherlands didn’t win. Lets move on now. Krul is a decent keeper, yes. His distribution of the ball is poor however and he hasn’t improved one bit. An excellent shot stopper however when his defense doesn’t completely collapse in front of him that is.

Yes – MA may be clearing the decks and cutting commitments to make the club a more attractive purchase, but the investment in training etc and the lack of a larger loan payoff suggest he has an ongoing plan as owner.

Comment #8Is Ashley ready to hire a decent head coach (I still choke when I call it that) in the summer? I’m not convinced. We play dross football and get 1-0 wins against extremely poor sides at home. What will it take to get the fat lump to spend some money on decent players? I have no idea.

Comment #17Despite vastly increased revenues there is no sign if increased investment in the club. We invest like a bottom place team. We don’t hang on to our decent players. The plan is for Ashley to make huge amounts of cash. Nothing more.

Comment #19Beermonkey, surely it’s time for one of your famous One Man Nude Protest Rallies around the Ashley castle. A large sign with Ashley Blows on it would be a nice touch as well. Then we’ve got work to do raising more money for the Mentally Handicapped Billionaire fund mate. 😆

I wouldn’t mind if he had a lack of natural ability as a keeper but the one thing he can do is practice practice practice and he would improve

Comment #27We need to get rid of Riviere in the summer. He is hopeless. Don’t pretend he is a good striker Mike get rid of. And Ferrerya as well. Stop mucking about pretending you know what you’re doing Ashley. Sack yourself from the board.

I wonder what Catchy thinks about Carver and his likely appointment as Head Coach in the summer?
We know that Catchy was attacking Pardew to get to Ashley but realistically, that was never going to happen.
Ashley’s focus is money and that’ll never change.

Comment #33Get rid of Riviere and Ferrerya. Sell Saylor if he finally stays fit for 5 minutes. Get rid of Obertan. Jonas will retire. Santon won’t be coming back. Mbiwa is gone. Colo is nearing the end. We have gaping holes all over the squad. Investment will be crucial this summer. Our next 6 games will highlight the problems. If we get more than 4 points out of that lot I will be shocked.

Comment #36Aye beermonkey. So even more profit from this year. Wage spending down. All major revenues up drastically. I wouldn’t be surprised if the profits for this year are around 40M pounds or more. And no significant spending on decent strikers or CB’s. We only buy midfielders. We’re in love with the midfield or Ashley is rather.
