It’s never a good thing when you bring a player back too early from an injury – especially a hamstring injury – but that’s what Newcastle did at the end of October against Manchester City in the Capital One Cup, and it was even against medical advice.
Rolando Aarons in action at Manchester City
And a few games later he injured his hamstring again, and has had problems coming back since then, and terrible news today that Rolando has just suffered another setback.
According to head coach John Carver – Rolando has injured his thigh yet again.
Aarons had been back in full training for a couple of weeks now, and we wondered why he hadn’t made the squad but Carver has said he should be fit fairly soon, when asked how long it would take:
“A week to 10 days.” “We are being careful with him. He has a hamstring issue and tweaked his thigh.”
How many times since November have we heard that he will be fit very shortly, and really this could (should) all have been avoided.
This is what Alan Pardew had said after the 2-0 win at the Etihad in late October about playing Rolando Aarons:
“Yes, I was advised not to but he did a little bit yesterday in training that I thought warranted him forty five minutes.”
Since the game at the Etihad Stadium, Rolando has played only one more time for the first team, and that was in the next game at home to Liverpool, when he came on for the injured Gabby Obertan after 27 minutes.
And Gabby is now back playing after suffering a much more severe injury than Rolando had.
The big concern we have is that Rolando’s hamstring is now weakened, much like what happened with Michael Owen at Liverpool when he was a teenager and was played when he had hamstring problems.
Newcastle have to review their procedures for how they prevent, treat and rehabilitate players after injuries – there’s got to be a good reason why we have the worst injury record in the Premier League almost every season.
Keeping our players fit is especially important when Mike Ashley runs such a small squad, presumably to save on the wage bill and generate big profits, but he refuses to spend much of that that money to strengthen the squad. 🙁
What do you think?

Comment #1Niall and Biffa at NUFC.Com (no mugs) have long been wondering out loud whether Aaron’s injury is linked to his unsigned contract.
Only the rosiest view would suggest the academy is spewing out “top youngster” after top youngster.
It would be a worry if those of talent that do emerge are forced to accept a low club value of their worth or be frozen out.
Aaron’s was already being tracked by other clubs. I wonder how effective denying him game time will be in putting them off.

Comment #2Make your bets people, Aarons fit or Ashley showing ambition, which will come first. Both are right around the corner (honest, just one week to ten days, or a summer or two), but which one will make it to the finishing line first?

We saw “perm-crock” Santon declaring he’s been fit for ages as soon as the gag was off.
He doesn’t appear crocked now.
And Jonas saying the same. Carver then said he was out of shape again last week, before naming him in the squad a few days later.

Comment #4Jeez we’ve lost such a talent in Pardew.
Not only was he a coach whose tactics and approach to games made fans drool with anticipation, he was also one so blessed with knowledge that he played Aarons despite specialist medical advice!
What a genius, what a loss, what a mess!

Comment #5BandB…It’s a shame that the players can’t keep up with the clubs accounts of going ons. They do pay their wages, why can’t they lie with them?
Who’d own a football club?
On Jonas, are we to assume that what was stopping him playing, reportedly a contract extention clause, has now been dealt with?

Comment #6Lesh…To be fair, no one expects an injured player to play. It was a masterstroke by our former great. Carvers got some big shoes to fill. He seems to have sufficiently sized feet mind.

Carver benched Jonas to draw fans’ ire away from him, Charnley and Ashley!
Cynical tw@s, evil.

Yup, Pardew’s a hard act to follow but Carver’s not far away from emulating the great one…. he’s exceeded expectations in the bullshit department already!

I wonder what it would do to a player’s morale if they were to see their boss giving the press and fans the career-damaging impression that they are a sick-note case, when they know it isn’t so.
Especially if they are banned from correcting the impression.

The only thing you can safely assume under Ashley is penny-pinching and deceit.
What joy and you’re lucky in that you’ve got the Ibizan summer and its associated attractions to look forward to!

You shouldn’t speculate, you’ll end up believing it……. Mind you’d not be far off the reality though.

Comment #12You have to laugh at BandB and Ibiza doing their impression of Stadtler and Waldorf
Either the club bring players back too early or they pretend players are injured when they’re not.
It cannot be both for gods sake

Obviously, Jonas being on the bench won’t get a huge cheer every week.
I expect him to get on only if the mood within the ground is particularly ugly .
Again, it is a card they can play just once.

Comment #14BandB…I’m guessing it isn’t loyalty that they feel. Or maybe, now stick with me here, they take it as a sign of how much they’re wanted by the club? It could be.
We’re only doing this because we love you Aarons, now get back on the medical table and grab your injured limb! No, not your arm, we told them it was your leg!
Lesh…Something about that comment made me think of a Ronettes song, not sure if it was originally theirs mind, “I wish I never saw the sunshine”. Sigh.

Comment #16A couple of points from recent chat.
White Tino
You think that going a further £50M into debt instead of being (say) £50M in profit would enable the club to win something. What? The top 4 clubs have squads £200M or so more expensive than ours – just spending it right now without a good coach in place would a) be innefectual (want to finish 9th?), b) tie up money for maybe 5 years to come in players who might not be wanted by the new coach, and c) contravene ffp.
Alan Shearer would like to see that kind of spending so we can challenge for the Cups. Like all those other Chairmen/Managers in the 50 odd years before Ashley. When we never won a cup. Ah, says Shearer, look at Wigan! Mike Ashley has looked at Wigan. Do you think those fans are happy to be out of the PL? AS thinks that the fans only come because their dads did. Can’t be right – we didn’t have 52,000 seats 20 years ago. And if you look back to the dark days in the 80’s you’ll see some very poor attendance figures: people want to see the local team having a go against Chelsea, Arsenal, City, ManU, Spurs and Liverpool year after year. That’s what they come for.

Comment #17And yes it can be both.
Carver said Jonas was nowhere near in shape on Monday last week. He was on the bench on Saturday.

Comment #18Jeff…They may not be possible at the same time, but we’re not talking about a small period of time here.
It is quite plausible, imo anyway, that the lad was rushed back and then injured. Since then, contract talks have stalled and therefore that may have had an impact on his return.
I’m not even saying it’s true, it’s an idea and it is possible.
As for Santon, yes, he was injured, they expected him back in November (as that link you posted states). Not sure what that proves. Since that date lapsed we’ve heard stories about how he was alread fit enough to play. Funnily enough, in early January Santon made noises about how we was happy and that he was due to talk to the club about his contact extention, as it only had 18 months left I believe.
BoyDoneGood…I may have missed something, but why is their no middle ground between going £50m in debt and having a £50m profit? Something nearer the break-even point? No one, well, at least not many, are asking the club to spend what they don’t have. Just to maximise our potential and spend what that generates on making us better. That’s really where it starts and stops.

Comment #19What’s the point in having a club doctor, if an ex-footballer/ manager can overrule his decision. Imagine you were in hospital and the doctors recommended you have surgery but alan pardew came along and said you’d be fine without it. Who would you listen to? The club doctors word should be final on injuries.

Comment #20I am a bit baffled by all this Aarons talk. Very conveinient that he seems injured ever since he turned down the ridiculous contract offer and it wouldn’t surprise me to find out he’s not injured but sulking and refusing to play.
All this also has a downside for the club, if it is all true, then he is very injury prone and big clubs may think to stay clear.

Comment #21Honestly not only do they need to look at the specialists we have at Newcastle but also at the training ground, I know Cashley has put some money into it but it seems that we suffer tons of inquires on the pitch’s there.
Players should never pick up inquiries when training and it seems we are always in the papers more than any other club saying ” suffered on the training ground “.
