John Carver had said after the 1-0 win at home to Aston Villa on Saturday that he thought Massadio Haidara, who was carried off on a stretcher after an hour with a knee problem, would be fit for the game on Wednesday night at home to Manchester United, and the player himself has said himself he is fit to go against the Red Devils.
Massadio Haidara being stretchered off on Saturday
Nobody would have thought that when the stretcher came out on Saturday, and with so few defenders fit it was expected to be another blow for Newcastle.
But it turns out that Haidara told the Chronicle this after the game:
“I am OK.” “It was not really bad and I think was brought off as a precaution because we play on Wednesday against Man United.” “I will try to do everything to play.”
With Newcastle so short of defenders it at least seems John Carver and the players are being sensible about any slight injuries, and if a players feel anything they have been encouraged to come off as a precaution.
The same thing happened with Daryl Janmaat at the Etihad Stadium, and he was available for the next game, which was yesterday and he was our Man of the Match.
And it looked like the injury stopped Carver from introducing Jonas Gutierrez to the St. James’ Park crowd on Saturday.
It’s now very likely the head coach will call on Jonas in the second half on Wednesday night when it’s expected to be a sell-out crowd against Manchester United.
And while we usually do well against the Red Devils at St. James’ Park, that wasn’t true last season when we were hammered 4-0 on April 5th.
Thar was the second successive 4-0 defeat after we had been hammered at Southampton, and we were in a run of six defeats in a row in the Premier League – for the first time ever. 🙁
It’s also interesting that nobody at the club has even mentioned bringing back Italian International left back Davide Santon from hos loan spell at Inter-Milan, because of all the injuries we have had, and Davide can play in either full-back position.
Another win is what we want to see on Wednesday night.
