Head coach John Carver cannot have been too happy at the end of this game, and it was terrible defending by Mehdi Abeid and Tim Krul that gifted Ashley Young with a goal and three points tonight at St. James’ Park.
Ashley Young after being handed a gift goal after 89 minutes
Neither side played well and it wasn’t a good game to watch by any means, but Newcastle could have still won this game if we had taken the three or more good chances we had to score – but we didn’t take any of them and we denied a stone cold penalty after just 10 minutes which could have turned the game in our favor,.
John Carver wasn’t the only Newcastle fan that was devastated when the final whistle was blown tonight.
This is what Carver said after the game to BBC Sport
“I’m devastated, I’m annoyed. I needed five to 10 minutes to calm down. Our guys gave every inch. But when you play Man Utd you have to concentrate for every minute and we didn’t.”
“I think we had the best chances and you have to put one of those away. You just wonder if they will hit you on the sucker punch and they did.”
“I’m devastated for our guys. The goal at the end the way it came, young Abeid has learned a harsh lesson, he is learning the game.”
The result keeps Newcastle 11th in the Premier League table and every team beneath us lost tonight, but a win could have taken us within one point of West Ham in 10th place, who lost again – 1-0 at home to Chelsea.
Stoke beat Everton 2-0 at home, and are now 7 points clear of Newcastle with a better goal difference – so that top ten spot is looking hard to achieve now – unless we can start winning some games and catch West Ham.
This is John Carver’s coaching record after tonight’s loss.
