Newcastle Board Explain The Criteria For New Head Coach

There seems to have been some good discussion at the Fans Forum that took place last Monday night, and the minutes have been published fully on the Newcastle web-site and they are certainly worth a read – here are the full minutes.

newcastle fans

This is what the Board has said in reference to a few questions about what they are looking for in a new head coach:

“The board stated that it will not consider the head coach matter again until the end of the season. The board went through a lengthy process in terms of speaking to a number of people about coming to the club as a potential head coach.”

“The outcome of that process was that the board felt the best option was for John Carver to be appointed to the position until the end of the season, at which point it will be reviewed.”

“In the event the board should need to look for an external candidate in the summer for the position of Head Coach, the board would not have to start the process all over again due to the level of detail and work which went into the initial search.”

“The board would look for an individual who would fit into the club’s structure, someone who is tactically astute, and who has a track record of developing young players and the ability to improve players.”

“The club has no concerns over whether a potential new head coach is British or from overseas and deems other criteria far more important.”

We notice that nothing is said of the head coach having had a successful record in his past coaching, only that he can develop young players and is tactically astute.

It’s important that Newcastle completed some detailed due diligence in January on some of the potential candidates, and that seems to have been done by Lee Charnley and he had previously said he had completed work on that.

That’s important,  because it would be the aim presumably to bring the head coach in before pre-season training begins in early July, so that the new head coach then has a full pre-season with the players before the season begins.

It will also be important that any new players are brought in as soon as possible so they have a full pre-season too.

All Carver needs is a 1 in 3 win record plus a couple of draws per season – so 41pts to be Mr Mediocre and perfect for a team aiming for 10-16th place.

    Jeff from previous thread

Im still waiting until the end of summer to see where we are so my stance is the same.

When i said the lack of trust i was talking for the supporters as a whole, i know im in the minority of people willing to see what happens in the summer.

In the event the board should need to look for an external candidate […] the board would not have to start the process all over again due to the level of detail and work which went into the initial search

    So… it’s Carver then.

jd – agree with your assessment of the FF minutes. If you read them, in isolation – not having any great knowledge of NUFC, you could only come to the conclusion (on most areas discussed) that it was a fair and reasonable response from the club.
But as you state there is no trust and really nobody believes them.
I’ve gone through the minutes quickly, wil probably re -read nothing really revealing – noted anything to do with finance was batted away and noted their response to q’s about the minimum living wage said it all for me.

    @ 7 and 8

First thing that jumped out from the statement. Huge shame, since that is definitely not a good move for the club.

The board should be continually looking for an external candidate. They should know by now if Carver has done enough to warrant staying – as Ed likes to point out in his updated table, clearly he hasn’t. They should be wining and dining candidates right now, not waiting to see if Carver gets us relegated and should be up front about their intentions. If nothing else, it would put Carver under a little bit of pressure knowing that his position is far from secure and that he will have to show something else to keep the job.

The only man the board want is John Carver. They are praying he has a good run of results in the final games.
They have absolutely no idea how to run the club. Sorry to say this but I hope Newcastle lose every game from now on.

    they must think we’re thick.

JOHN CARVER to be APPOINTED to the position until the end of the seaon, at which point it will be REVIEWED.”

first things first we will see if carver can manage to keep this team in the PL allowing ourselves to continue getting the TV money.

“In the event the board should need to look for an external candidate in the summer for the position of Head Coach, the board would not have to start the process all over again due to the level of detail and work which went into the initial search.”

If he proves to not be capible of keeping newcastle in the PL, we shall begin looking for the manager or HC that can do that.

“The board would look for an individual who would FIT into the club’s STRUCTURE, someone who is tactically astute, and who has a TRACK RECORD of DEVELOPING young players and the ability to IMPROVE players.”

Hopefully we can alsohave the added bonus of him developing these cheap imports, then of course we ourselves will sell those player allowing us to make more profit.

I think Jeff is aggressive on the blog -why I do not know. Not sure about this feminine thing though. Got a picture of him doing some boxing training -think he needs to get some proper boxing kit – the boxing gloves look ok.

Hahahaha – you are such a knacker, scumbag and guttersnipe..
Just a thought -rather than buy a whole load of boxing kit – why not just buy some wrestling boots – then straight across to the Ladies Wrestling Forum without any further expenditure (that means costs).

    Hahahaha – what a knacker.

The question this begs is what it is that will need to be “reviewed” at the end of the season.

If, as many think, an outside candidate has already been offered the job and sworn to secrecy, what need would there be for a review?

The obvious reading of this statement is that Carver is the man in position and the job is his to lose, and that others will be looked at again if he fails.

It would be good to hear what those who believe Remy Garde has already been lined up make of this.

BandB – one of the seemingly inexplicable factors is why is Remi Garde not speaking about this matter.
If all the press speculation about him being is contact with NUFC is wrong – surely he woud say so.
Surely there must have been some contact -hence the apparent gagging by him.

Maybe I’m Naïve but I thought the board gave some fairly honest answers to a lot of the questions. They were very cagey on financial type questions such as the ST tickets sales then again most organisations and individuals are when asked about their finances.
I was pleased the New Years Day transport issue was raised because that was a joke especially as Traffic Wardens were having a field day – funny how weren’t on a day off!

    Tuff,

I think the one thing you CAN’T construe from that statement is that a decision has already been reached in favour of an outside candidate. who is being kept under wraps.

The best it suggests is that the club is open to reviewing the situation should it conclude that John Carver has failed to make the grade.

There is nothing in this which suggest there is an active policy to bring in a “modern European-style manager.”

    BandB @ 20

Well I am one of those who thought Remi Garde was the top candidate for the job, base solely on his interviews where he stated he had a confidentiality agreement with the Newcastle board and so could not talk about it.

If he has not been offered the job why the need for secrets?

Reading between the lines of the FF minutes, the club are saying Carver has it nailed on.

The only thing that is certain here is the clubs history of misleading comments and outright lies, saying a whole lot that tells us fans nothing.

A lot of the real questions fans want answered either don’t get asked, or the club avoid answering.

Another meeting over, another black hole to explore, and the fans left wanting for answerers.

With regard to Cisse Tiote and others
Particularly the lack of breast beating about Cisse’s absence , the club has a real feel of clearing the decks.
I think the Summer window will blow everyone away.

There is a real feel of a complete clean out.

Siem de Jong has been heavily involved with training esp with Pedro Beardsley and Joe Joyce.

A lot at NUFC have moved beyond this season and are looking forward
