19 year-old Tom Heardman was born in Gosforth and he already stands 6ft 4in tall (it’s surprising what those hamburgers can do), and it’s not perhaps too surprising that the striker’s all time hero is a certain Alan Shearer.
Tom Heardman – up-and-coming striker
Alan was also born in Gosforth back in 1970, and of course Tom has also been compared to Andy Carroll, who is the same height but is a southerner in comparison – born south of the river in Gateshead. :D.
Tom made his debut for the Newcastle U21 side back in August of 2013, and he scored in the 1-1 draw at St. James’ Park last night against Stoke City, when Newcastle were the better side for long periods of the game.
Peter Beardsley has been impressed with Heardman’s form for the U21 side, and after the game this is what Peter told the Chronicle about Tom’s goal:
“It’s brilliant to score at St James’ Park,” “It doesn’t matter if you are 12, 15, 18, 20 it doesn’t matter.” “To score at this stadium is really special.”
“You could tell what it meant to him.” “It’s great for him because he’s a nice kid.”
The big striker of course resembles Andy Carroll with his height, and we assume Tom is still growing, and the youngster is as good on the ground as he is in the air, and in that sense he resembles Stoke City’s 6ft 7ins striker Peter Crouch.
It’s hardly surprising that Tom’s favorite on the Newcastle squad at the moment is striker Papiss Cisse, and hopefully Tom will be able to come through in next year and become part of the first team squad.
It’s good that Newcastle have a number of exciting youngsters coming through the ranks at the moment.
And for Newcastle to have a successful side in the future, it seems we are going to have to produce a lot of top youngsters in the Joe Joyce’s Academy that come through the U21 side with Peter Beardsley, Newcastle’s Development manager.
Well that’s unless we can somehow persuade Mike Ashley to spend some of Newcastle’s money, which he’s been loathe to do in the past.
What do you think?
