There’s a mention in the Chronicle today that Newcastle are interested in FC Basel’s 23 year-old center-back Fabian Schar, and that he will be a transfer target in the summer.
Fabian Schar – Basel 23 year-old center-back
One of Newcastle’s weakest positions at the moment is center-back, with both Fabricio Coloccini and Mike Williamson in their 30s, and next season will be the last season for the Newcastle captain.
Steven Taylor’s contract also runs out next summer, and we could even see the local lad sold in the summer, and of course Steven is out currently for the season with an Achilles injury.
So it seems we need at least one center-back brought into the club in the summer in addition to Jamaal Lascelles, who will join the first team squad after his one year loan to Nottingham Forest,.
Forest goalkeeper Karl Darlow will also join the first team squad in the summer.
Schar started his career at Swiss club FC Will and moved to Basel in the summer of 2012 after representing Switzerland in the London Summer Olympics.
The 6’1″ defender made his debut for FC Will in November 2009 against FC Stade Nyonnais as a 17 year-old and played 56 games for them with 9 goals before joining Basel in July, 2012 on a three year deal.
At FC Basel he has played 102 games with 15 goals and 7 assists – so he can score some goals, and in fact he has four goals in 9 appearances for the full Swiss side having also played for several Swiss Youth sides.
FC Basel have won the Swiss Super League for the last two seasons while Schar has been with them, and in fact they have won the Super League five times running and they are currently 7 points ahead of Young Boys.
One reason Newcastle will be interested is that he becomes a free agent this summer, and Newcastle like to bring players in on the cheap.
However, there are some big clubs interested in the impressive defender and they include Arsenal, Juventus and Inter-Milan and in January this is what Schar said about all the transfer rumor speculation about him:
“I’ve read the market rumors, they’re normal at this time.” “I can say that without a doubt I think Inter are a top club, perfect. That would be an ideal destination.”
“However, I have a contract which ties me to Basel and I’m very happy here. At the moment I’m not thinking about anything else.”
All of the three big clubs interested in him seem keen on signing the 23 year-old this summer, and Juventus have already held meetings with him.
So we’re not sure why he would want to come to Newcastle, when he can join a top club in the Champions League every season and for higher wages too.
Newcastle may have scouted this player a lot this season, but there seems to us little chance we will win the race for his signature.
But sometimes miracles do happen and we’ve been wrong before.
😀

You’ve not really countered or cast a shadow on my shadow of a doubt lol.
I was asking WHY they’ve decided to promote him and there’s absolutely nothing to suggest it’s because he’s the right man. Ergo cheapest option.
I don’t see What carver’s feelings have got to with it if he’d not been installed? You think the club would of cared if they had of bypassed him? Not a chance plus he’s not really been a loyal 20 year servant has he. On and off. Obviously through no fault of his own but you get my drift. Even if he had then he still shouldn’t just be handed it because of that. Like the old boys network. Load of old school bollox.
Merit and the required skills to push us on but he’s got neither.

Comment #44Zero chance we’ll land this guy. That said, just because he’s linked with big clubs, he’ll want a game and that rules out Arsenal – they’ve got loads of centre-half cover. Hopefully he’ll see the chance to be a starter here in every game with a chance to improve his physical game without being in the glare that blinds Man Utd, Chelsea (and the rest) players. He’ll probably just see a big club and move there. He has plenty of suitors.

Comment #46the club really should be going all out to get the likes of Schaar and Ayew signed up to join in the summer.
Both will have good sell on value which we know Ashley loves.
It’s time for Ashley and co to take the club forward again and not just strive for mid table or premier league safety.
Still think the manager appointment, sorry head coach, will give us an indication of the clubs level of ambition. Ie appointing Carver will further justify that we want to scrape by and survive whilst making a profit.
The fans are mostly realistic, with the majority wanting to to at least be challenging for a europa spot, a potential cup and to see some decent football.

Comment #47agree on the comments on Ed’s posts. he does a great job putting all the toon related news, transfers links etc onto the blog in one place for us to read.
My only minor criticism, is when its 3 or 4 stories within minutes so you don’t get chance to have a debate about the previous topics.
Plus we are lucky, i’ve nosed at a few other clubs blogs and they are rarely updated!
Keep up the good work Ed!!

Comment #48Man City, Chelsea, Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool, Spurs are way ahead of us when it comes to being a draw for players – we’re competing with the likes of Stoke and Southampton for players these days

Comment #49The clubs a joke, no top players would even consider Newcastle these days, MA wouldn’t pay their wages never mind buy them.
greed will eventually take us down, perhaps its for the best. At least we could compete. I’m finding the whole situation a complete waste of f***ing time. Whats the point when we’re going nowhere and don’t intend to.
All the club is about is advertising SD and Mash raking the sky money in.
pity ST holder’s can’t see this.

In summer we bought Cabella who will be a world beater eventually and the captain of Ajax to name just 2 to shoot your hyperbole down in flames.

Comment #54Depends what you mean by top players really. Many of the top players in France, Belgium, Holland, even Spain would love to sign for a Premier league club. Even the clubs paying low Prem wages are paying more than most of the European leagues.
We are in many ways an ideal club, for players to come over to the Prem from European leagues. We offer the big crowds, decent wages and a platform to push for their really big move. A couple of seasons of playing okay/well for us and they can add £30,000+ to the wages demanded when one of the Champions league clubs comes knocking in England, or one of the European elite.
The player, his agent and Newcastle all win. The fans who watch their side dismantled again, but do we believe that the players truly care if the fans lose out?

Comment #56It’s really hard to care about anything concerning Newcastle nowdays. Score, concede, win or lose are all just the same, just shrug at how pointless it all is. Makes me wonder why I even bother watching whenever we are playing.
My guess is that all Carver will have to do is to avoid relegation and the job is his.
He’ll keep it until he fails horribly or if he snaps and walks. He’ll be replaced by either Stone, Woodman or Beardsley. None of them fill me with any sense of anticipation.

Cabella will eventually be a world beater? Really mate? He can’t even play consistently for us, I can count on 1 hand the amount of stand out performances he’s had for us. Can anyone tell me off the top of there heads Cabella contribution to this season?
As for SDJ, he’s a good signing but a risky one, we gambled on him whilst others didnt. So far we look like idiots for doing so
