John Carver have his press conference for the game against arsenal on Saturday and John was asked questions about different things.
Lee Charnley and Mike Ashley – we may be a little short at the back
One of them was on the shortage of available played where we only have 13 experienced outfield players plus two goalkeepers available and the question was that with John trying to get the job permanently in the summer it was as if he’s got two hands tied behind his back.
This is how John answered the question:
“The one thing I will say is that I spoke to Lee Charnley and he’s obviously spoke to Mikey, and they have acknowledged the fact that yes – we are a little bit short at the back – in particular at center-back.”
“But there’s a process in place and I’ve been involved in that process in the last few weeks, we’ve got a big meeting coming up in the next two weeks with Lee Charnley and Graham Carr to talk about the future, to talk about the investment in the summer.”
“There’s going to be investment and I can tell you that because I’ve seen who we are looking at without going into detail, so there’s a lot of work being done behind the scenes.”
“And this football club will invest in the summer because it needs it.”
A little bit short at the back – we’ve had only three experienced center-backs all season and now just one who’s available, and we allowed Davide Santon to leave on the last day of the January transfer window.
Steven Taylor and Paul Dummett are out injured for the rest of season, and Massadio Haidara has a troublesome knee and Colo is suspended for three games – so it’s lot more than a little bit short.
And up front Newcastle never replaced striker Loic Remy last summer.
So we would hope there will be some (significant) investment in the summer, especially after the financial results are released within the next week or so – which will show we’ve had plenty of money to spend – Ashley just decided not to spend it.
And we still have nine games left to go this season with a very threadbare squad – so it will be interesting to see how many points we’ll get in those final nine games.
In John’s 10 league games so far he has just 9 points with two wins and three draws in the league, and in the last eight games of last season we got one win – just 3 points.
Let’s hope it’s better this time around, but our squad has been hit harder than it was last year at this time, with long term injuries and suspensions.
