Unless Newcastle are going to string a run of wins together there’s just no way we will be able to finish in the top ten this season as we are currently 7 points behind Stoke, who were beaten 2-1 at home by Crystal Palace today.
John Carver – defeatist if he says we cannot make top ten
Stoke have a goal difference of -3 compared to Newcastle’s -15 so in reality we are 8 points out of 10th place at the moment with just eight games to play – so the chances of us getting into 10th place must be very small.
In fact West Ham after their late goal winner against Sunderland at Upton Park tonight are tied on points with Stoke on 42 points and West Ham’s goal difference is +3, so it looks like the best we can do this season is 12th.
First of all we would have to take 8 points from the last eight games to do that – given West Ham and Stoke lose all their remaining games, and in our last seven games we’ve picked up only 5 from a possible 21 points.
So most reasonable people would say we are in a bit of a slump at the moment having lost four of our last five games, and we have only got 9 points since John took over – and that’s over 11 league games – two wins and three draws and six defeats.
So how we can gain 8 points against Stoke in eight games is very difficult to see.
Bit don’t talk logic or reality to John Carver – the Newcastle interim coach still thinks we can finish 10th.
Alan Pardew’ Crystal Palace have overtaken Newcastle with a win at Stoke – and they had 16 points after the win we had at home at Everton and at that time we had 26 points – and it was exactly half way through the season – 19 games.
So in the last 11 games Palace have gained 11 points on Newcastle.
This is what John Carver said after the game today:
“I’ve got to be honest, it is because of the situation we are in.” “Congratulations to Alan, but I am not worried about Crystal Palace.
“The only thing that’s on my mind and the only thing I’m worried about is this football club and making sure everything I do is 100 per cent, everything the players do and give is 100 per cent, and that’s all I can ask for.”
“Well why can’t we make 10th place – I’d be defeatist if I said no.”
John seems to get tied up about wanting to always be positive – and three’s nothing wrong with that as long as you are also realistic.
With only 8 games to go and 8 points off 10th place, it is going to be very difficult for Newcastle to finish in the top half.
That’s the reality we are in – and that’s not being defeatist.
Sunderland have three draws and four defeats in their last seven Premier League games – and we play them two weeks tomorrow at the Stadium of Light.
We just cannot lose to Sunderland in this game.
