Here’s Why Newcastle Have Little Chance Of Finishing Top Ten

Unless Newcastle are going to string a run of wins together there’s just no way we will be able to finish in the top ten this season as we are currently 7 points behind Stoke, who were beaten 2-1 at home by Crystal Palace today.

john carver scumpled face

John Carver – defeatist if he says we cannot make top ten

Stoke have a goal difference of -3 compared to Newcastle’s -15 so in reality we are 8 points out of 10th place at the moment with just eight games to play – so the chances of us getting into 10th place must be very small.

In fact West Ham after their late goal winner against Sunderland at Upton Park tonight are tied on points with Stoke on 42 points and West Ham’s goal difference is +3,  so it looks like the best we can do this season is 12th.

First of all we would have to take 8 points from the last eight games to do that – given West Ham and Stoke lose all their remaining games, and in our last seven games we’ve picked up only 5 from a possible 21 points.

So most reasonable people would say we are in a bit of a slump at the moment having lost four of our last five games, and we have only got 9 points since John took over – and that’s over 11 league games – two wins and three draws and six defeats.

So how we can gain 8 points against Stoke in eight games is very difficult to see.

Bit don’t talk logic or reality to John Carver – the Newcastle interim coach still thinks we can finish 10th.

Alan Pardew’ Crystal Palace have overtaken Newcastle with a win at Stoke – and they had 16 points after the win we had at home at Everton and at that time we had 26 points – and it was exactly half way through the season – 19 games.

So in the last 11 games Palace have gained 11 points on Newcastle.

🙁

This is what John Carver said after the game today:

“I’ve got to be honest, it is because of the situation we are in.” “Congratulations to Alan, but I am not worried about Crystal Palace.

“The only thing that’s on my mind and the only thing I’m worried about is this football club and making sure everything I do is 100 per cent, everything the players do and give is 100 per cent, and that’s all I can ask for.”

“Well why can’t we make 10th place – I’d be defeatist if I said no.”

John seems to get tied up about wanting to always be positive – and three’s nothing wrong with that as long as you are also realistic.

With only 8 games to go and 8 points off 10th place,  it is going to be very difficult for Newcastle to finish in the top half.

That’s the reality we are in – and that’s not being defeatist.

Sunderland have three draws and four defeats in their last seven Premier League games – and we play them two weeks tomorrow at the Stadium of Light.

We just cannot lose to Sunderland in this game.

it just makes you wonder why we always have to be chasing a game to start playing like that. 2nd half was great but why not the same intensity from the first whistle?

its been the same for years we do well for 10 20 mins or 45 but never a full 90 and normally its the second half

I think were happy to get 0 0 half then see what happens then the last 20 mins step it up
its why were so sloppy I think let them get at teams for 90 mins
given how shaky our defence is its the best way to defend

RH…We know why, it’s the game plan. We can’t attack / press the opposing team as that apparently negates us being able to defend.

Trying to get to the hour mark at 0-0 seems to be a big deal for both Pardew and Carver.

But please remember, Mike likes watching football being played on the front foot. As can be seen by his managerial and coach hirings over the years.

They’d have been reminded at half time that Arsenal are likely to be one of the four clubs playing in the CL next season and if they’ve got any chance of Arsne Wenger liking the look of them then they better put a show on.

Thing that Newcastle do have in abundance is players that can run past players at pace with ease Sammy , Sissoko , Perez , Cabella and even Jonas were doing some lovely moves we need to keep hounding teams off the ball Arsenal were sweating by the end of the game

We need to do that against every team if we had have played with that level of intensity each week we would probably be top 8 or very close to it

One thing I did notice in the last 10 minutes, was when Sammy passed the ball when we were attacking, he would just stop and let the attack continue without him.

Perez, Sissoko & Cabella all had wonderful movement and gave each other options, even Jonas, but not Sammy. Was it like that all game (or should I say all second half – from the sounds of things the first half wasn’t worth talking about), or was he just tiring at that point?

    No here’s why

    1. We have a manager totally out if his depth.

    2. We have an owner completely unwilling to spend sufficient funds.

    3. We have a squad nowhere near the quality our great club demands.

    4. We have no ambition whatsoever.

    5. We have a fan base so disheartened that there is almost no point supporting this club.

    6. We have an ownership that has sucked every ounce if passion out if the club.

    7. Mike Ashley.

    That’s why.

You are comparing Garde with Fournier and not Laudrup and McClaren.

Laudrup win% in bigger leagues doesn’t go over 35 %.

McClaren currently in 5th place in Championship with same amount spend 2.65 m £ that Garde was allowed to spend in his last season at Lyon despite them selling players for 20 m £.

And McClaren didn’t manage to qualify our national team for Euro’s in 2008. Despite 3 teams from PL playing Champions League semi-finals in: 2006/2007, 2007/08, 2008/2009.

I said “Perez, Sissoko & Cabella all had wonderful movement and gave each other options, even Jonas, but not Sammy.”

With the exception of Jonas, all of those other players started and therefore (stick with me here Jeff), they all had played the same amount of PL football. Yet, the first 3 still managed to make their runs for our attacks, whilst Sammy didn’t.

Is the picture getting a little clearer yet?

I’m happy to ignore you Jeff, what I don’t want to do is get in to stupid arguments with you. It’s up to you, debate like the big boy you’re supposed to be, or do one.

As for this is what they get (I wont say we, as I wasn’t actually calling for Pardews head), do you mean they get pretty much exactly the same as they did with Pardew?

the lad has stamina probs but he has improved and is improving the more he is playing considering he is 22 I think he has not had many first team games

I still don’t think we should let him go, we will have to pay to get a replacement he will want more than Sammy, Sammy could prove to a really useful squad player and he can take corners who knew that

Beermonkey…I’m in no rush for Sammy to leave. He has something imo, just not sure he’ll develop it. Still, as you say, he’s a decent enough sqaud player and it’s unlikely that Ashley will be forking out for an upgrade on a squad player. We only invest (well, sort of) in purples and we don’t need many of them, it’s not like they can all play!
