We expect Alan Pardew to always talk about his four years at Newcastle as being probably the best time of his football management career, and one reason for that is because he will never manage a bigger club or a club with more passionate fans than Newcastle – and he knows that.
Alan Pardew – misses Newcastle
But it seems that he just got fed up with the way Mike Ashley ran the club, when he kept selling our best players and not being quick to replace them – it became almost impossible to build a good team.
Alan will always talk well of Newcastle, and he did just that yesterday on Goals on Sunday, but he was at Newcastle four years not five:
“You’re going to get difficult years as a manager, and you have to see them through.” “I had five years there, and people come up to me and say ‘you must be so pleased you’re away from Newcastle’, but I actually miss Newcastle.”
“The support is such, that it’s intense. They want their team to win.” “If I was to be critical of my management there, I didn’t win the derbies and didn’t do well enough in the cups, and unfortunately they’re emotive games for Newcastle fans.”
“It’s a real regret of my management there, but I’m proud of everything else I achieved, and I sincerely hope in the summer they have a good window, buy well, and get that place rocking like it was in that second half against Arsenal.
“The transfer window really hurt us when we lost Yohan Cabaye and Loic Remy got injured, and that’s when our problems started.” “It is difficult to try and stay with those top clubs when you haven’t got the investment.”
“We got so close – probably closer than Southampton are this year. We were two or three games away from the Champions League.” “The funds at Newcastle are way, way below Liverpool and Spurs, and those are the teams the fans expect to compete with.”
It’s a strange thing, but given Alan really had only one good season at Newcastle when we finished 5th top in 2012, he left the club with a higher profile than he had when he came in – and people outside Newcastle think he did well at the club – given the constraints put on him by the owner.
That doesn’t reflect well on Mike Ashley, but the thing we’ll remember Alan for is the big wins he had against the big clubs, when he somehow got the lads playing well against teams like Liverpool, Manchester United, Manchester City and most of all Chelsea.
This season we broke Chelsea’s winning streak in early December and before that we had beaten Manchester City 2-0 at the Etihad Stadium in the League Cup with a patched up side that included a number of youngsters and fringe players, and we somehow came back to beat Tottenham 2-1 at White Hart Lane.
He also was the instigator of the greatest comeback in Premier League history, when we came back and drew 4-4 with Arsenal after being 4-0 down after 26 minutes and being booed of the field at half time.
Alan had only been at the club just over a couple of months, but he’s right, losing four games in a row for the first time ever to Sunderland was not good, and we lost far too many 3rd round games in the FA Cup against lower league opposition.
Most of all we were impressed with Alan’s tremendous mental strength – and he was tested a lot while at Newcastle – and being manager of Palace must feel like a cakewalk for him in comparison.
At least Alan is being honest – but he was at Newcastle for only four years and one month.
😀
With Palace planning a big summer transfer window it’s going to be interesting next season to see how the two clubs perform in the Premier League.

Comment #42scotton…Where I sit with regards to not attending SJP is that whether it’s effective long term, it is important to show that as a fan base, we can unite and we can sacrifice to let our voices be heard.
It’s a step. At the moment, they don’t take us seriously and it’s easy to see why.
This isn’t a dig at anyone at all, but what saddens me more than the way Ashley is running this club, is the idea that we as fans cannot unite.
A fair whack of fans aren’t happy. Why can’t we all agree on one plan of action, even if just to show the powers that be that we can organise ourselves and will do so again if things don’t change.

Comment #46Ibiza – I share your frustration, and maybe I would think differently if I lived in Newcastle and was able to attend. I am probably not a fair representative in this regard. However, I do believe that the fans can unite in significant number even if we don’t unite in methods. If Ashley sees fan discontent on a great many fronts (declining attendance, store front pickets, a more vociferous fans forum, etc) then surely there must be some kind of impact.
It seems like Ashley believes there is a silent majority out there who are happy with his ownership. That cant be the case surely. Like I said, I am not there with my fingers on the pulse. Does the mood in the city reflect the mood on this blog?

Comment #47Scottoon…I’m guessing the last question wasn’t directed at me, seeing as I’m in Ibiza 🙂
I just feel as a fan base, we’re all pulling in different directions, so it’s all a little half arsed. That only plays in to one mans hands.
As for the “silent majority” – that one really has me scratching my head tbh. I can’t help you out, I cannot gauge for the life of me what the average fan is actually thinking or what they’re willing to do for change.
I do think we’re getting closer though. More and more are getting to that point. My concern is that those fans don’t simply just give up. We need to turn the negative in to a postive and do something about it.
Anyway, I’m going off on one of my hippy trippy people power rants. I’ll save you for today.

Comment #52Personally I can’t see any evidence of fans been disappointed with Mashleys running of our club. There’s always plenty of negative comments by the majority on here, with Very good reason!
But SJP is always full, MA often sits and watches dross with the fans but no one says a word. Hes been allowed to take people for mugs basically.
People pay good money, we need ambition in return.

Ibiza….I forgot about your tropical locale. Must have been denial on my part as I live in snowy Nova Scotia, Canada. No spring, let alone warm weather here.
I think you are probably right that we are getting closer to some kind of tipping point. I just fear that it might be too late given the current regime’s belligerent disregard for its customer base. The trickle down effects will be an inability to attract even decent prospects let alone current “stars”, an inability to attract a proper HC, and ultimately, an inability to play in the Prem.

I agree! I was surprised at Ashley’s demeanour on Saturday having a laugh with his mate alongside an apparently relaxed Charnley with no sign of fan dissent.
Quite honestly we have been starved of success for so long some seem just happy to be in the PL 🙁

Comment #55I too watched Ashley having a chuckle on the TV. I have also noticed that the crowd noise and atmosphere is no longer what it used to be in years passed. Often hear the away support more than the Geordies. Maybe it is a case of apathy. I hope not or there will never be change.

this is the trouble. People’s expectations are being slowly lowered without them realising or just accepting this is the way it is now.
Even when Mash had the nerve to change the name of our stadium a week later it was accepted.
We’ve got to voice our options before we’re either stuck with continuess dross or worse still being relegated.

The crowd reacts to events on the field after initial noisy support. I was reassured of the passion in the second half against Arsenal as the atmosphere was electric !

Comment #59Testament to what many of us have said before….that we simply want to see attractive flowing football, and not the utter dross that Pardew and now Carver (for the most part) have been serving up. The crowd responded to the effort of the lads on the pitch but at the same time, we seem willing to accept yet another defeat. We all know this season is going to whither away and I don’t see us finishing above 14th. That is what we cannot accept. The message the players get is what we all know…..you’ve done enough so no need to put it on the line. That message is down to Ashley and Penfold and it has to change.

Comment #63Shady dealings from owl heed whilst he was on the board. Not a suprise really is it, after all he’s doing the slugs bidding. Also Mccall confirmed the other day that rangers are paying a portion of all 5 loan players wages. Looks like fatty wanted to burn through that first £5m loan (£10m in two parts) from shite defect.
Interestingly, the new board have stopped the process of taking out the second part of the £10m loan (the other £5m) that fatty tried to desperately activate before owl heed and leech got voted off the board and they’ve provided there own one of £1.5m, interest free and unsecured against anything.
Slimy b@stards and people defend the slug on here.

A lot of our players need to take a good look at themselves. Every player isn’t giving 100%.
Saturday showed the two sides of our game, unfortunately we usually see our first half performance on show.

Comment #76I think they did held some informal like discussion with some, not many, particularly with Garde, but the longer they wait to get the right man,the more they most likely miss out on the top targets. It indeed will be a nightmare if JC get nailed but I don’t mind if JC get some coaching role along side the new head coach!
