We watched the Holland vs Spain game last night and it was a good game to watch, with Daryl Janmaat playing the whole game for the Dutch and a reported transfer target of Newcastle’s – Malaga’s 21 year-old striker Juanmi (full name Juan Miguel Jimenez Lopez) – made his debut for Spain and looked quite good.
Bas Dost – 25 year-old Wolfsburg striker
Now there is a report today in Sports Bild in Germany that Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost is also a target of Newcastle’s this summer, and he came on as a sub in the second half for Holland last night for his second cap.
Bas Dost made his debut for Holland at the Amsterdam ArenA only last Saturday, replacing defensive midfielder Nigel de Jong after 63 minutes, as Holland drew 1-1 with Turkey in Amsterdam with a stoppage time equalizer from Wesley Sneijder.
The 25 year-old has been at Wolfsburg for three seasons now and he has scored 16 goals in 23 games this season and is a star player in the Bundesliga.
And yes, Newcastle were interested in the player before he moved from Heerenveen to Wolfsburg almost three years ago.
While at Heerenveen for two seasons from 2010, Dost scored 52 goals in just 73 total appearances, and he also had 10 assists, so he’s had a good record for a while now.
Bas is a big guy at 6’5″ tall, but cannot be accused of being very quick, but he has an eye for goal and in Germany he has scored 33 goals in 71 total appearances for his German club.
Southampton are the other club said to be interested in the giant striker, and of course the Saints are an ambitious club these days willing to pay high fees for good player, and they beat us to center-back Toby Alderweireld last summer – and Toby is currently on loan this season at the Saints.
Some bigger clubs could also become interested in the player, who is said to be worth around £15M these days after having such a great goal-scoring season in Germany.
We’ll have to wait and see in the summer about how big a draw Newcastle are these days, and we hope we can make some big signings this summer.
Newcastle need to do that in what seems to be a water-shed summer for the Tyneside club.
£9M is about the top transfer fee Mike Ashley has paid out for any player at Newcastle – for Papiss Cisse – but that will likely be broken this summer.
