Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost has been on fire in the Bundesliga this season since late January, and he has seven goals in his last seven games, and 18 goals in his total 23 appearances for Wolfsburg who remain in second place in the Bundesliga 10 points behind Bayern Munich, but 7 points ahead of 3rd placed Borussia Monchengladbach.
Bas Dost – 25 year-old 6’5″ tall Dutch striker
As we reported this morning, Newcastle have been linked with the striker who gained his first cap in the 1-1 home draw on Saturday night against Turkey in Amsterdam, in the Euro 2016 qualifiers.
Bas has scored 13 goals since after the winter break, but he is not too happy at all with the way the German club treated him before the winter break came in early December.
In that period earlier this season he often wasn’t even in the match day squad, and made only 6 appearances for the club – but he has come alive after the winter break.
This is what Dost told RTV Drenthe:
“It all looks nice now, but I won’t forget the period before 6th December.” “I had to spent long hours on the stands; I will definitely weigh in that period when I will make my choice about my future.”
It’s Dos’ goal-scoring ability that have Wolfsburg on a rich run of results which have taken them 10 points behind leaders Bayern Munich.
Wolfsburg walloped 4-1 Bayern at home on January 30th, with Bos scoring a brace.
The news is that Premier League clubs Newcastle United, Southampton, Stoke and Swansea are clubs said to be tracking the player, with a view to signing him in the summer.
A couple of years ago we would have said Newcastle had an excellent chance of signing the big Dutchman with competition from those clubs.
But Southampton, Swansea and Stoke have shown in the last couple of years they are more ambitious than Newcastle, and more willing to pay out the big bucks to get good players in.
And all three clubs are above Newcastle in the league table currently, and the closest is Stoke who are still 7 points above us, with Swansea and Southampton even higher up the Premier League table with much better goal differences than us.
We hope Newcastle can show a lot more ambition in this summer transfer window, so we can start building a good side for the future.
And that means keeping our best players as well as bringing in some top players to strengthen the squad.
But you just never know with Newcastle.

OP
I’m hoping we turn them over big style because God knows they need putting in their place and it’d make it even sweeter being at the stadium of shite.
Revenge is the order of the day after the recent scorelines at SJP (0-3) then weasel face nabbing the winner this season. A player who only seems to turn up against us. Hate his horrible weasely face with a passion.
I know form usually goes out the window ie the style of play or current good or bad run either team is on at the time but them beating us 4 times in a row will surely be on our players minds and johnny boys too.
As testified by the fact that as poor a run as they’ve been on in the past they’ve managed to beat us and turn their shite season around which makes it even more galling to stomach.
I expect defensive, boring football for the fir….all match.
In all honesty it depends on which NUFC team decides to turn up – the rabbit in the headlights of recent derbies or the team that held their own in the second half v Arsenal.
I’m hoping, nay praying that it’s the latter.
If we play to OUR potential and don’t worry overly about their game then I’m saying 0-1. Maybe 2.
If we freeze like usual I think it’ll play right into their hands and undoubtedly they’ll be up for it and most likely beat us comfortably.
Beginning to despise the derbies now.

Comment #3Can’t see much changing to be honest,we will lose some players due to contracts running out etc and they all won’t be replaced.
We may take in one or two but our so called targets just couldn’t get over the line 🙁
Have been hoping for years and nothing happened so why should it change now?

The last time they where the big favourites we won 5-1…..
I’ve got a feeling 😉
I think we’ll win, it’s ours to lose.
THEY HAVE TO WIN IMO.
A draw is fine for us and any coach with half a brain should be able to put the SMB to the sword with ease.
In the last 4 matches we’ve been sucker punched and thrown the game away, they’ve used every bit of luck they have.
Nothing will give me greater pleasure than seeing them crying after we’ve beat them, they’ll pass boro on the way down.
I fancy us to win 2-0 and I’m having 4 bets as I said other day.
2-0 to us
Colback to score a pen
Raylor over the wall, free kick
All 3 combined.
I was nervous about the last 4 and worried about Pardews game plan, Carver is no Mouriniho but he’s a Geordie and knows SBR 😉

Comment #6Looked at some highlights of the goals. Cisse or Perez would have scored each and every one of them.
If he comes here and doesn’t get service it is a waste of money.
Cisse is a better player.

You said that Mcclaren wouldn’t want to drop half his salary to come to NUFC.
Mcclaren salary is 1.2million/year, pardew was on 40k/month, please explain how Mcclaren salary is higher than pardew?
From what I know is 1 year = 52weeks, 40k/week x 52 weeks = 2.08million.
If Mcclaren is on 1.2mil/year then he is on 23k/week salary.
Maybe I’m missing something here, pardew salary would be lower than Mcclaren if there was only 25weeks in 1 year.
2million/year is low if you only compared to top 4 or 5 teams in the league.

Comment #8if the news are correct that the club is ready to pay 2million compensation for Mcclaren then I’m pretty sure that NUFC already discuss with Mcclaren about salary.

Comment #10Santon…Pardew was supposedly on £500k + incentives a year when he was here. The only manager in the PL paid less was Laudrup at Swansea.
I have no idea what SM is being paid but my guess would be a lot more.
And he would naturally want a pay rise for coming here (this is just me humoring the idea that he’s coming here)

…but he’s at Derby now where he has played and been Ass. Manager. I thing he wants to take them places. Let him do that 🙂

Comment #17It’s going to be Carver or McClaren. Charnley will have been given the brief by Ashley to hire a “safe” manager. ie one who understands that his job is to keep the club in the premiership as the only real priority, and the style of football is irrelevant. Managers from Europe or further afield are more likely to want to play an attractive, free flowing game and that won’t do. Too risky. Grind out just enough results to get by with the bare minimum squad you’re given, and that’s the job done.

While we, as fans, will have to grind out however many seasons it might take in support of our team, till Ashley packs his bags and we can hope for a brighter future. Just hope I’m around long enough to see it.

Comment #19Santon..that’s all in the past (and the Dutch league is very difficult to go by – look at this season)
If you draw a parable you’ll see SM has peeked a long time ago and the only thing you’ll get is a manager in decline.
You might as well sign KK or Sven G. Ericsson

Comment #20Think that 40k p/w pardew wage is due to the wage slip that got leaked but i believe it was before the 8 year deal. Pretty sure he got his wages upped to around £800k a year with bonuses up to to an extra 2m depending on league position (guessing that was for winning the league but bet it was like a good 500k for staying up)
Would estimate he probably took home about 1.5m per year

Comment #23Carver has us set up to play a better brand of football more often than Pardew was prepared to, you’d think because Pardew had a clearer sense of the limitations of his squad and of the strengths of the opposition. It’s hard to judge Carver, being so inexperienced. Far easier to judge Ashley, whose approach has more often than not left his manager high and dry. A top coach as well as a deep and competitive squad, would really be coming out of left field at this stage of the game, approaching 8 years now. I somewhat doubt a McClaren or similar would seriously consider it, given time to reflect, and most likely having spoken to Pardew, despite Newcastle’s stature, without real and concrete assurances, which doesn’t appear the owners style.

Comment #24Agree with Jesper on Mclaren but i fear he might be the best we can hope for.
I think that first time at twente was amazing and showed he was very tactically astute but in the dutch league only 5 teams can ever win it and your almost guarenteed wins against any side below that. premierleague very different when every game is a battle

I would imagine that the unwashed virus carriers will be under enormous pressure to win because of their very precarious position in the league and pressure from their new manager.
They will either respond positively or become very cautious and very nervous as to not make any mistakes which conversely often happens in these circumstances..

Comment #33I’m quite optimistic about the Derby – we do have a better team even without Colo & Cisse. I am worried about our short preparation time with the likes of Sissoko, Janmaat & Krul on international duty although I assume Sissoko would have returned Monday and the Dutch lads yesterday and presumably with no injuries?

Comment #34I think as time drags on over the summer we’ll all be thankful if Mclaren signs but unless the club are willing to make concessions to one of the most unattractive job descriptions in the league I can’t see him wanting to come. When Pardew signed he was desperate to get back in to the big time and Mashers was pretty much an unknown entity with some people thinking his generosity bank rolled our return to the Prem. The cat is well and truly out of the bag now and all managers will have taken note of how Pardew jumped to take over a bittom three club that Pulis had quit due to restraints. Unless there is leeway the only manager we’ll get is someone desperate to work at any cost to his already battered or anonymous reputation.

The same has applied in each of the last 3 seasons if I’m not mistaken and they’ve won. Obviously like you say it could have the opposite effect but so far hasn’t where we are concerned. It galvanises them for some strange reason whereas we just flop.

Comment #36if we want a striker from the Bundesliga, we should be in for Max Kruse who has a much better all round game.
hopefully we’ll be in for Austin and Mitrovic. If we could get those two with Perez and Cisse, we’d have four good strikers for the first time in years!
Even better those two plus Ings and we can then sell Cisse.
If only our club had ambition.
