There was news in January that one sticky point with Newcastle appointing Remi Garde as the new head coach, was that he wanted to bring in his own coaching staff, and it seems Newcastle want to keep the current coaching staff in place at Newcastle.
Remi Garde – wants to bring in his own staff
And if that happens there will not be too much that will change on the training field, although a new coach other than John Carver himself or Steve McClaren, could still make a difference.
Former left back Olivier Bernard thinks that Remi Garde may not want to come to Newcastle with John Carver and company still around.
This is what Bernard said in the Chronicle today:
“The fact he always travels with one physio and one assistant means he might be put off.” “In France it has been quiet too. You were expecting them to get it sorted by now, but it’s not the case.”
“He will need a lot of backing from the squad and money to spend.” “We have young talent but in the professional game, the experience is very important. That gives you points.”
“Look at games in the past that were 0-0 and very tight – but we had Alan Shearer, who would pop up and win you the game.” “Now you don’t see that.”
We could understand why Newcastle may want to keep Carver and company if we were coming off two successful seasons, but the opposite is true, and this year Carver has not shown himself to be up to the standard needed to be a head coach or a manager.
But it seems the club want to keep things fairly unchanged with the personnel on the training field, and go about their merry way, which has brought little success to Newcastle over the last eight years only one good season when we finished in 5th place.
And remember the great Sir Bobby Robson was sacked for only finishing in 5th place in 2004, because that wasn’t good enough at that time.
The only success we have had lately is to make money, and the club have fallen a long way over the last eleven years to mid-table mediocrity – which seems to be success for the owner.
And only yesterday another former left back at Newcastle – Robbie Elliott – thought that a clean break is needed at Newcastle in the summer.
But it seems Newcastle have already assured Carver he will be staying on at Newcastle, whoever the new coach is – and that’s certainly putting the cart before the horse.
But Newcastle have not shown over the last several seasons that they can manage things well at the football club – and never seem to think these things through fully and what the consequences may be.
It would be ridiculous to keep John Carver at the club at the expense of getting a top coach in, but knowing Newcastle, that wouldn’t surprise us too much – even though that would be a ridiculous situation to be in.
The people running the club never seem to think things through, either clearly or logically, and what the consequences could be.
What do you think?

Comment #41And if Carver et al are deal breakers, Ashley could still recruit Gsrde or Galtier who’s bring their own backtroom by giving Carver and his crew a different role – but NOT Assistant Manager etc.

Remember it and he was one of SBR’s failures as far as crowd were concerned. SBR got annoyed with fans for their lack of patience and if my memory serves castigated them for it and even ventured the view that he (Cort) may come back for another club and haunt them.
Wasn’t a Saint everyday Our Bobby and on his Human days could turn when fed up with fans criticism of his lads and methods. Still wonder what we might have been if he had been less honourable to Barcelona and come as asked when KK went 1st time.

Comment #43This is an awful translation by Google
ASSE is St.Etienne
“The management of the ASSE to be very vigilant to keep its cadres for future challenges. The worst blow that could be worn to the club, however, should come straight from England where Newcastle keeps Etienne captain in his sights. This club is nothing less than Christophe Galtier, the coach of As Saint-Etienne. While he was contacted last winter, Galtier who refused to drop his current boat in full mother would be always in the viewfinder of the leaders of the English club. As proof, the place occupied Alan Pardew has remained virtually vacant since Remi Garde who had been approached refused to play the temporary then make room for Galette.”
Galette is Galtier ( a french play on words , a galette is a small round cake and Galtier is small and tubby and looks as if he eats lots of them )

Comment #44@lesh -basically says St Ettienes team is going to be ripped apart and sold in the summer. Ruffier is going to Monaco. Perrin to Arsenal and tabanou is wanting off. Galtier doesn’t want to rebuild again at Les Verts.
Also hints that Galtier is #1 choice for nufc and he refused out of principle to talk before the summer. Hints that newcastle offered Garde the job till the summer when they would then appoint Galtier.

Comment #46also. Galtier is on about 300,000 euros a year at St Ettiene. Has worked with minimal transfer budget and had to live with selling his best players many times. His focus has been to develop youth and work around systems that suit the players he has. Tactically minded. Bit of a spikey personality but I doubt he’ll mind the conditions at newcastle, St Ettiene have ambition but very little finance and hes had to cope with worse over the last 4 seasons.
He’s a little bit defensively minded, loves a good 4-2-3-1 and enjoys a counter attack.

I was at the training ground at Benton shortly after SBR left & was told by a photographer from some newspaper the exact same story. Problems with the younger players & the more senior players complaining to SBR about it. They were also calling him a few choice names behind his back which was tearing the dressing room apart.

So do you think Galtier will stand in front of the camera and grin like an imbecile after the last of his fit trio of CBs is allowed to leave on deadline day or tell us how supportive Lee is for not selling our only recognised striker.

Chances are that Houghton would not toe Ashley’s line and thus he’d be perceived as troublesome.
So, as any good and forward-thinking owner knows how to deal with such problems, Ashley sacked him rather than find a way to resolve any disconnect between the two parties.

SBR was old school and I think we were seeing the first ( and worst?) of the “How Big Am I” professionals coming through. SBR approach was eventually taken advantage of but Souness’ hardman approach then caused problems rather than douse the fire as Shepherd had hoped..
As I said earlier history does repeat. Board in getting rid of Richard Dinnis (soft) and bringing in Bill McGarry(hard) did the same thing – out of the frying pan into the fire. More history in play – Dinnis was originally coach under Gordon Lee who thankfully left went to Everton (ha ha) and players fought for him to step up and he was reasonably successful unti folloing season when wheels fell off ( just like Roeder decade or so later!)

As I have said before I believe Houghton was running out of road (look at some poor results along with the Sland and Arsenal ones) and it made sense only if the club upgraded which it DID Just not in mine and your etc. eyes only Mike’s.
Houghton may have been an eventual fans favourite ( didn’t start with any great welcome) but I fear he would have had a harder and harder time the way things were going under Llambias and the facing of the press without any support. Don’t think he could have stood up to it indefinately and better he didn’t resign ( lose compo) or become tainted in fans eyes eventually as he surely must have given events which were outside his control beginning with Carroll sale

I don’t believe they did think they were getting an upgrade, they knew they were getting someone in totally comfortable with the sleazy way they do business, unfortunately all that fifth place finish done was buy Pardew and Ashley time they didn’t deserve and eventually even Mikes puppet got sick and rapped.

Comment #57@JFA – he’s not the type to grin at anything. He’s french…
Hes the kind to say it’s not ideal but that he’ll make the best of whats available. He’s no Pardew and he won’t make a bad situation look good, he seems pretty honest and principled. If the board are honest with him upfront on the clubs intentions regarding buying and selling i can’t see him kicking off. His a miserable dour guy. I’m not really a fan, I’d class les verts as my second team, got watching them about 8 years back when i worked in france alot, he’s basically a french david moyes in style and personality.

Talk at time was that Hughton ( apologies for misspell on last post!) was thought to be too close to dressing room leaders Nolan, Barton etc as they had been instrumental in his and our success after relegation. Llambias wanted some one to do the ( dirty) work they wanted on bonuses and the like which they didn’t feel Hughton was up to given the strong characters and his almost symbiotic relationship with them.
They were apparently stunned to find it common in football and at NUFC for big long term contracts held by players on long injuries and who didn’t then play often but still collected big wages. This was a problem in unloading then as well.
Overreaction to this situation especially in FFP times is still costing us.

No I think they did feel they got an upgrade but only on the parameters they were then setting out – see my response to Lesh.
How many managers could have survived as long as Pardew did from immediately being hung out to dry by Llambias at press conferences to field questions on Hughton’s sacking (‘cos nobody else was then saying much) then on to the Carroll and all the rest of the mess he was solely left to face the music on. I don’t think Hughton could or would have and couldn’t have influenced matters any differently.
Better I think that he is still held with affection by fans as I honestly don’t think our path to the present would have been diverted by anything measurable.

Comment #62oddly I thought getting rid of Hughton was the right thing, though the board did it in the worst way for the wrong reasons. Don’t think we’d have done any better under hoots than we did under Pardew. It does highlight a problem we have which is zero leadership in the dressing room. The club is run like north Korea and we have very few leaders.
In the past Nolan, Smith,Shearer, speed, even harper, etc have always been leaders when captains, even if they;ve not been playing well themselves. Always thought Barton showed leadership 95% of the time when he wasn’t losing the plot. Carroll did a bit to a certain extent, Shola too. Under hoots we also had sol campbell and lovenkrands, again both leaders and big personalities.
Side lacks any of that now. We’ve got some good players, better than under hughton but no one seems to take responsibility. poor abeid has been sent out to the press to give answers to a thrashing a couple of times….

As well as the HC position being vital I agree it is the lack of leaders on the pitch that has been costing us in many games for some years now.
Could be of course that this attribute is not one of the ones at the top of Carr’s list of boxes to be ticked. Might such players = potential troublemaker in Mike’s eyes?

It really does depend on the definition of upgrade, if a manager is going to be judged on his ability to lie to the fans and cover for his bosses then we had one of the best in the business.
Jay,
Pardew managed to score more than three goals six times in four years at the club and three of those were with Houghtons team. CH had some poor results but never took a hiding that became the norm under Pardew

Talk always seems to be about what a good group we have ( both Pardew and Carver both) which is also vital but not as effective without the catalyst of a leader. If no one brought in our hopes seem to ride on DeJong (Possibly when we see more) Janmatt ( if he stays) Colback ( not very vocal but may develop as he ages and squad changes).

not sue we had signed any1 officially by then
makes me wonder what sort of influence colo has and he must have some rumours of him being made manager seemed to persist for an age
will he get a future role under ashley

You might be right on the hidings front ( mind our history is littered with them ) but it needs rose tinted glasses to class all performances under Hughton as decent or above. There was some poor football under him both (occasionally) in Championship and in PL. His outstanding performances against Villa, Sland and Arsenal in particular mask some dreadful results as well.

The reality is that the club cannot announce a pre-contract if they wanted to.
It would take any motivation out of Carver to keep doing his job.
For the same reason I doubt that the club is even able to start talking to people without Carver getting wind of it hence why all talk has been stalled until the summer.

Comment #77On the heavy defeats I accept that Pardew’s lack of plan B or initial set up was to blame but another big factor was surely the lack of leadership on pitch to drive players on, organise and not meekly accept more goals going in. How many of the defeats seem to grow worse because of an apparent aquiesence to the situation by those out there.
